Favorite Couples

Image
The month of love and Friendship is the perfect timing for this subject. Everyone has their own favorite couples so here we're going to talk about my favorite ones in a few different genres, this is no way a fully complete because there are a lot of books I still need to discover but this list shows my favorites so far: *YA Dystopian In the Hunger Games trilogy by Suzzane Collins We have Peeta and Katniss, the second book in the trilogy, catching fire is where my favorite part of the romance takes place. Peeta is almost perfect, he is kind, loving, dedicated and even if he does not have his feelings reciprocated he is still an amazing human being and still does not act  like an ass towards her. In part the main reason it is one of my favorites is because of how dedicated and the way Peeta can love so fully, even if Katniss for most of the story (the first and second book) she is rather cold to him and can't actually decide to accept his feelings or even decide what she

Depression and other Magic Tricks

Image
Author: Sabrina Benaim  Genre: Poetry Published August 2017 Book description (from Good Reads):  Depression & Other Magic Tricks explores themes of mental health, love, and family. It is a documentation of struggle and triumph, a celebration of daily life and of living. Benaim's wit, empathy, and gift for language produce a work of endless wonder. Thoughts: First off, I was unable to concentrate on the messages of the poems by one super big flaw in my opinion. The format was extremely annoying and hard to get into. #2 there were some poems such as Explaining depression to my mother hat were very good, there were plenty of others that I could simply not care about. There are a lot of mentions of depression, loneliness, not being in a relationship, issues with fathers which were somewhat ok but still nothing that got my attention all that much.  Overall I did not like this book may be the style is not my thing or I could not connect to the topics as others hav

The Black Tulip

Image
Author: Alexandre Dumas  Translated fro French Original Title: La Tulipe Noire Published: 1850 Book Description (from Good Reads):  Cornelius von Baerle, a respectable tulip-grower, lives only to cultivate the elusive black tulip and win a magnificent prize for its creation. But after his powerful godfather is assassinated, the unwitting Cornelius becomes caught up in deadly political intrigue and is falsely accused of high treason by a bitter rival. Condemned to life imprisonment, his only comfort is Rosa, the jailer's beautiful daughter, and together they concoct a plan to grow the black tulip in secret. Dumas' last major historical novel is a tale of romantic love, jealousy and obsession, interweaving historical events surrounding the brutal murders of two Dutch statesmen in 1672 with the phenomenon of tulipomania that gripped seventeenth-century Holland. Thoughts: Initially, it is hard to imagine how important a damned flower will be in the political intrigue tha

Hamlet: The Prince of Denmark

Image
Author: William Shakespeare  Genre: Classics, Play Published 1600 Book Description (from Scribd):  Set in the Kingdom of Denmark, the play dramatizes the revenge Prince Hamlet exacts on his uncle Claudius for murdering King Hamlet, Claudius's brother and Prince Hamlet's father, and then succeeding to the throne and taking as his wife Gertrude, the old king's widow and Prince Hamlet's mother. The play vividly portrays both true and feigned madness – from overwhelming grief to seething rage – and explores themes of treachery, revenge, incest, and moral corruption. Thoughts: Hard to pinpoint, it is written in a way that you follow Hamlet through his journey trying to get back at his mother and stepfather. It describes him a bit crazy with hallucinations and incessant planning on how to get revenge.  The general idea I like but Hamlet is not a character that I came to like; his attitude, the way blames and insults his own mother, the illogical way he acts (it is

Marianela

Image
Author: Benito Perez Galdos  Genre: Classic Fiction Published: 1878 This is a classic reading that many schools make you read as required reading in high school in Mexico, except that in my school this one was not part of it.  So I found the audiobook and decided to give it a try. It is a book about a very unfortunate orphan girl living in a small cruel town. She is mistreated by all, told time and time again she is a waste of space and worthless. She also considers herself worthless and ugly, never seeing kindness from anyone her whole life. Then she has a new job, being the companion of a young blind teen. He is convinced that she is the most beautiful girl because of the kindness she possesses.  A few new developments take place and the true colors of the kind young man come up. He is a vain little liar, flimsy and only having passing interest on people dismissing them very soon after.  Most of the people portrayed here are elitist, caring only about the class and looki

Midnight Days

Image
Author: Neil Gaiman's Published: January 2000 Book description (from Good Reads):  Gathered from Gaiman's long career, this omnibus edition includes Gaiman's early work on John Constantine: Hellblazer and Swamp Thing, as well as a never-before-reprinted Sandman story. An introduction by Gaiman himself is also included. Includes: *Jack in the Green, which was not really all that interesting or maybe not too much to my taste. It felt like nothing was really happening here but it was an ok start for the collection. I guess this would be more appreciated from the nostalgic value. The art was good in the old style which I identify as older comic vibe (it was published a little while back). *Brother Power was a bit too weird, the storyline is not bad but too short. Also in such a small amount of pages, I am surprised to find someone I really dislike. *Shaggy God Stories this one was simply strange in not in the best way. I do not like it a lot, the idea of trees and plants

The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck

Image
Author: Mark Manson  Genre: Non-Fiction, Self Help Published: September 2016 Book Description (from Good Reads): In this generation-defining self-help guide, a superstar blogger cuts through the crap to show us how to stop trying to be "positive" all the time so that we can truly become better, happier people. For decades, we’ve been told that positive thinking is the key to a happy, rich life. "F**k positivity," Mark Manson says. "Let’s be honest, shit is f**ked and we have to live with it." In his wildly popular Internet blog, Manson doesn’t sugarcoat or equivocate. He tells it like it is—a dose of raw, refreshing, honest truth that is sorely lacking today. The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F**k is his antidote to the coddling, let’s-all-feel-good mindset that has infected American society and spoiled a generation, rewarding them with gold medals just for showing up. Thoughts: The writing style is very laid back, it tries and succeeds in making yo

Helium

Author: Rudy Francisco Genre: Poetry Published: November 2017 Thoughts  Can't say I know much about spoken poetry, I had never heard of the author but again as many people this year trying to find more poetry. I saw a review done by a Booktuber mentioning this book so I decided to pick it up. It covers love and unrequired feeling, broken heart. The first part was exactly what I expected to find, poetry about lost relationships. I am not too keen on the topic but decided to continue. Then it touches subjects like sexism, racial issues, it critiques social standards, oh my I really loved this book. The way it expresses everything that makes you connect to the author and you do feel the rage, the impotence, the fear, it does transmit his feeling on the matter which is what I look for in poetry.  The way it speaks about how men have been taught to visualize women, the way he takes on the stand against their god... I loved the one titled: To the man standing on the corner h

The Anti-Christ

Image
Author: Friedrich Nietzsche Genre: Classics, Nonfiction First Published: 1895 Book description (from Amazon):  The Anti-Christ, wherein Nietzsche attacks Christianity as a blight on humanity. This classic is essential reading for anyone wishing to understand Nietzsche and his place within the history of philosophy. "We should not deck out and embellish Christianity: it has waged a war to the death against this higher type of man, it has put all the deepest instincts of this type under its ban, it has developed its concept of evil, of the Evil One himself, out of these instincts-the strong man as the typical reprobate, the 'outcast among men.' Christianity has taken the part of all the weak, the low, the botched; it has made an ideal out of antagonism to all the self-preservative instincts of sound life; it has corrupted even the faculties of those natures that are intellectually most vigorous, by representing the highest intellectual values as sinful, as misleading, a

Herding Cats

Image
Author: Sarah Anderson  Published: March 2018 Genre: Graphic Novel Book Description (from Good Reads):  With characteristic wit and charm, Sarah Andersen's third collection of comics and illustrated personal essays offers a survival guide for frantic modern life: from the importance of avoiding morning people, to Internet troll defense 101, to the not-so-life-changing futility of tidying up. But when all else fails and the world around you is collapsing, make a hot chocolate, count the days until Halloween, and snuggle up next to your furry beacon of hope. Thoughts: It is a collection of small mini-stories that make you smile. It shows normal yet funny situations people can face and what really happens in the head of a creative artist (the author herself). In the end, there is a small pieces of advice about being creative, about the good and not so good about being a creator online. It includes good advice but nothing overwhelming or mind-blowing.  It is a nice quick r
