Book description (from Good Reads): The nation of Panem, formed from a post-apocalyptic North America, is a country that consists of a wealthy Capitol region surrounded by 12 poorer districts. Early in its history, a rebellion led by a 13th district against the Capitol resulted in its destruction and the creation of an annual televised event known as the Hunger Games. In punishment, and as a reminder of the power and grace of the Capitol, each district must yield one boy and one girl between the ages of 12 and 18 through a lottery system to participate in the games. The 'tributes' are chosen during the annual Reaping and are forced to fight to the death, leaving only one survivor to claim victory.
When 16-year-old Katniss's young sister, Prim, is selected as District 12's female representative, Katniss volunteers to take her place. She and her male counterpart Peeta, are pitted against bigger, stronger representatives, some of whom have trained for this their whole lives. , she sees it as a death sentence. But Katniss has been close to death before. For her, survival is second nature.
Thoughts:
Reread of the book after a few years. I still enjoyed the story greatly. The dedication Peeta shows for a girl he barely knows is still something I find overly sweet. He is very decided and brave. Katniss is still very coarse and it takes a little more time to grow into her, she is a bit too untrusting and very closed off from others, even Peeta. Even after they are thrown together she is very cold to him, she is very dismissive to the team from the Capitol. It is understandable, she has hated the people from the Capitol, they are the ones who everyone would blame for the games.
The story cannot be objectively analyzed. It is full of nostalgia.
So in big summary, the story is not action packed it has the drama of survival, fights to the death but not really graphic and full of violence it is more on the drama and the slight fear of dying or killing others, but for the most part the main characters do not actively perform kills for most of the story.
It is mostly a story of survival but the romance and the idea of it the overlays everything.
This is the first time I try the audiobook, unfortunately, I did not enjoy it as much. Hard to pinpoint the reason but I was unable to be enchanted by it. It might have been better to try it but rereading the digital version or the actual book.
I might try to read the next one in the series also in audiobook.
