Exit Strategy

Author: Martha Wells

Series: The Murderbot #4

Publication year: October 2, 2018

Book Description (from GoodReads): Murderbot wasn’t programmed to care. So, its decision to help the only human who ever showed it respect must be a system glitch, right?
Having traveled the width of the galaxy to unearth details of its own murderous transgressions, as well as those of the GrayCris Corporation, Murderbot is heading home to help Dr. Mensah—its former owner (protector? friend?)—submit evidence that could prevent GrayCris from destroying more colonists in its never-ending quest for profit.
But who’s going to believe a SecUnit gone rogue?
And what will become of it when it’s caught?

Thoughts:

By now it does feel a bit formulaic. The adventures keep piling up. Murderbot is still a bit annoying insisting it does not have feelings and continues to think humans cannot really care about or it should be possible to care for humans.

Anyway, Murderbot decides to finally go back to Dr. Mensah and provide the proof from the previous adventures. He goes back and finds out a not-so-nice surprise. Dr. Mensah is missing, after a trial or law issue with GrayCris Corporation. There are issues now, the all but won fight was turning tides and Murderbot was not certain why. To top it off, the one person who is always in the back of his mind, Dr. Mensah is suddenly missing The corporation she was representing is no help, they do not want to keep fighting so much.

Murderbot decides to go to the heart of the matter. Murderbot is once more surprised about human stupidity and credulity. How could they think it was a good idea to go alone to the place where the corporation your lawsuit could destroy?

I will not go into the details. But major spoiler. Dr. Mensah is rescued and grateful. And finally, after several books, they have the conversation they should have from the start. Murderbot is given the freedom she was offered in the first book finale. It took forever, Murderbot is asked what it wants, and given options instead of simply everyone assuming they know what the other is thinking.

This really felt like the ending of a series. It seems like it is the end but there will be a follow-up or another series set in the same universe. I am not certain I will continue that one.

The series was an enjoyable and quick read.

This at least helps me to say I have completed one series. A very nice start of the year.
