Book Description:
So yeah I began the challenges all out of order, I guess it doesn't really matter and I have been starting multiple books at onc. It really is no problem for me because I generally do read several books at the time but it does kind of make it harder to finish them soon, there fore I'll try to stick to one or two per day and see how soonn I can post the reviews. I have little time left it's already Tuesday and I still have 5 challenges to complete. Let's get to it!
Warning: Spoilers for the previous books, not likely but this is the last book therefore it if you haven't read the others this will give you the heads up as to what major events took place.
Mara is trapped in the facility with Dr Kells and Wayne the male nurse who helps her. She doesn't really remember what's happening only regains consiousness when the drugs stop having effect for short periods of time but then Dr. Kells gives her a drug to make her forget the the proceduresso yeah. Mara has no idea what's going on for sure. Unitl someone switches the jeringes or whatever place the drugs are kept and when Dr. Kells injects her with them they have no effect. This allows Mara to stay concious, for a while. For her surprise Mara receives help from the last person she qould have ever imagined, Jude. He "kills" Wayne and leaves a tape with instructions.
Mara escapes her room and finds Jaime and Stella, who were also kept in the same facility. They have not been experimented on and look far better than her. They decide to escape, but Mara can't leave. She stays behind to find Noah. He's not there, instead she finds herself in a trap but the fury she had kept bottled in surfaces and she kills Dr. Kells and finds Stella and Jaime once more.
The three of them make it to the Island No Name (really, what kind of name is that? Pretty funny XD), and face another issue where Mara is forced to kill again. Stella is traumatized or affected but Mara not so much. Mara is still lost in the memories of a past long gone and has no idea why, or what exactly they're going to do.
They each want different things, they want to go home, find the cure for them, find Noah, mostly they want to se their families; but they need a way to make their parents believe them or at least hea them out enough without sending them to another mental facility as soon as they get home. They can't go to the police without risking being arrested for the murders of the mental institution personel they just escaped from. If they go home their parents will ask questions and insist on seding them to be evaluated again or just plainly have them commited to another retreat and if they start telling the truth will get them no where but the asylum without of hope of getting out, forget the temporary status of their stay.
What are they going to do?
We continue getting snapshots of the long ago past of the unknown person. In it, the protagonists arrives with her new family to India, they asked her name and she choose her new identity based on the doll her previous family had given her, she became Mara. That is a very interesting fact... the doll and now the this person shares with the present time girl is intriguing.
Anyhow the story keeps going back and forth with the present time adventures of Mara and her companions. So the trio devices a plan:
Sounds reasonable enough really. When they get to Noah's place they find the good butler Albert Eugine and he kindly informs them (thanks to Jaime) that Noah is well but is currently at the Horizon's Residential Center for an unknown lapse of time; the very place out unlikely trio just escaped from.
This doesn't give them much hope. Jaime and Stella take it hard and as a solid proof of Noah's certain demise.
Side note: I am doing the annotations as I read so the need to know is great; thouh there is a new book that just came out recently and it's called The Unbecoming of Noah Shaw and I know for a fact that it takes place after the ending of this book.... So yeah I spoiled myself but this only serves to increase my curiosity. Where is Noah? What happened to him? Why hasn't he found Mara yet? Above all, how do they come to find him?
Resuming my retelling:
Still Mara tries to stay focused and 100% convinced that he's still alive.... Even though doubt keeps trying to crawl in her thoughts. Mara reminds herself what her Noah used to say about his parents; they never knew where he was not even when he was still st home. Mara keeps reinforcing her belief by having complete faith.
The amazing lie they will give: The three of them are going to an extended wilderness retreat. Thanks to Jaime's abilities not only everyone believes it, but they do not even check if it's true. Almost everything went smooth except that Daniel, Mara's older brother, was not at home when they delivered the news s he did not fall under the "spell" but they decide to worry about him suspecting later.
They go towars Ney York, they can't exactly go through too much security in case people start looking for them so they drive. Jaime manages to get people to lend them their vehicles. Mara's health declines on the way. She is sick, nauseous, uncharcteristically moody and constantly tired. Her companions even they were also trapped with her do not share her current state. Thanks to the comments and complaining of her road trip compaions, they come to an unlikely suspicion at least from Mara's P.O.V. Mara starts to doubt even if she insists that there is no way for her to be pregnant. How could she? She insisted she was a virgin, but then again there were plenty of days or weeks she had no recollection of. What sort of experiments had been performed on her? The imlication of what could have happened that led to a pregnancy made everything worse and she refuses to even consider it. Mara's health keeps getting worse, they have to stop too often and she knows she's the only reason they're slowing down; her relationship with Stella starts to show even more signs of strain. The other girl is terrified of Mara, or afraid on her behalf, it's hard to tell. Stella is only one who is bothered by the killing even if it was on self defense and to top it all they all have been commited by Mara.
The trio is overly stressed because of the doubt so ganging up o Mara Jaime and Stella fnally convince Mara of taking a pregnancy test, it's not all that difficult all she has to do is pee. The result is NEGATIVE. Both relief and not. Mara is still sick the only difference is that nos they do not know why. So the continue their trip but Mara's mental condition deteriorates or maybe her subconcious does know something we do not and indeed tries to help her. The story turns a little darker still. Mara's reflection advices Mara to cut her own stomatch open. It is disturbing, at least for me. I have never liked self-harming even on books.
Turns out it helps.
Mara tries for a second time and cuts deeper when they arrive in New York and find a place to rest. Jaime and Stella find when she's practicing the self-exploration on her stomatch. They end up treating Mara thanks to the medical kit found in a bag delivered to the place they are staying in. Someone knew they were heading there and what they needed to do. Is this some game someone is playing and they are the mindless pawns in it?
Michelle sure is something, this story keeps getting confusing and more intriguing as it goes on. This is so good!
So after playing Operation on Mara the trio continue to search for the people responsible for Horizons, it leads them to several places that almost seem like dead ends. They finally go search of documents and financial records, they find a new link, the Mr Lukimi, the weird guy from book one that keeps showing up in random places is linked there somethow. He might be the one behind everything.
The trio find Daniel, Mara's older brother doing some digging of his own. With his help teh manage to find information on Dr Kells, she's being participating and undertaking experiments for years. She was looking for a cure for the effects of G-1821-3; that extra protein supposedly allows the person to retain memories of genetic ancestors, also it's thorized that it gives the people affected greater abilities.
Among other things, they find out that Dr. Kells, maiden name Deborah Susan Lowe is the adoptive mother of Clair and Jude Lowe. This detail makes them even more suspicious of the things that released the whole shain of events leading them there.
What they find:
Again he reminds her that without her Noah's destined for greatness, with her he's ruined.
This is an awesome final for teh trilogy. I loved it!!!
I give this a 5 out of 5 stars. One of my favorite books so far.
I was initially giving too much details but the more you advance in the book the better and more intrincate it comes and yeah some things you need to read them the way Michelle wrote them in order to complete bask in the emotion.
I totally recomend this book, this whole series totally worth it!!

Anyhow the story keeps going back and forth with the present time adventures of Mara and her companions. So the trio devices a plan:
- Return to Miami.
- Visit Noah's prents to figure out if he's alive or not.
- Go to their own families and make sure they do not raise hell in search of them.

Mara reminds herself what her Noah used to say about his parents; they never knew where he was not even when he was still st home. Mara keeps reinforcing her belief by having complete faith.
"Just beause you couldn't prove something doens't mean it wasn't real."So after leaving the Shaw's place they head to their families. Jaime came up with a plausible explanation to give to their parents so they don't worry when they leave. Because they are leaving, being to find Noah or discover what really is going on with the experiments and overall they want to find the people resposible for what happened.
The amazing lie they will give: The three of them are going to an extended wilderness retreat. Thanks to Jaime's abilities not only everyone believes it, but they do not even check if it's true.
- Dr. Kells is a carrier of G-1821 but she never manifested. She believes the gene is resposible for her infertility.
- She begins workig with a pharmacologist looking for a way to conteract the effects of the gene. Nothing worked on her.
- She wants to experiment on others see if it an be cured.
- Being unable to get approval to experiment on humans legally she does the next best thing. She becomes a foster parent.
- There is record of several pairs of kids adopted by Dr Kells. All pair of twin boys, all deseased.
- Every one of them diead after being in her care. The deaths were recorded, all listed under natural causes and with different syntoms but all culminating in a fever before expiring.
- The children's ages at time of death went from 8 months old to seven years old.
- Jude and Claire were the fifth pair of children. Only the male manifested after being induced the effects of G-1821
We get a lo of information on the research but it culminates on the fact that someone is being founding Dr Kells to find the people who have the mutation. It has been traced along their family trees and very thoroughly. The memories from Mara's ancestors reveal shocking truths. But matters not, Mara is on the quest of finding Noah and she falls victim to a trap. Someone messages to go alone someplace she tries to but Daniel and Jaime can't allow that to happen. They are all captured and BAM! The real mastermind is revealed.
It definately is not who you expect it to be. I mean by this point it was really har to guess correctly. Well the memories of the past life kind of give it away if you know how to read between lines but yeah it caught me by surprise.
Mara finds Noah, the poor fellow doesn't know what has been happening. The nature of their destinies are revealed. Noah doesn't give a damn.
Mara is a Shadow archtype while Noah is the embodiment of Hero. They are meant to kill one another. Noah is supposed to be the Hero and end it all. He resists but after some persuasion well he does.
Nothing is ever as black and white as people try to make it seem. Mara has power beyond what anyone expected her to have. And oh boy does it surprise us.
As a parting gift the unlikely heroes receive letters from Lukimi, whatever his real name is. In it he expalins to Mara:
"Noah's gift is that he could live forever and help others to as well but his curse is that he only wants to die. You Mara are gifted with the ability to protect the people you care about, but only in a way that hurts them and others. You can reward with life but you must punish to do it. "
Again he reminds her that without her Noah's destined for greatness, with her he's ruined.
This is an awesome final for teh trilogy. I loved it!!!
I give this a 5 out of 5 stars. One of my favorite books so far.
