They Both Die at the End
Title: They Both Die at the End
Author: Adam Silvera
368 pages
Date Published: September 5, 2017
Book Description: On September 5, a little after midnight, Death-Cast calls Mateo Torrez and Rufus Emeterio to give them some bad news: They're going to die today. Mateo and Rufus are total strangers, but, for different reasons, they're both looking to make a new friend on their End Day. The good news: There's an app for that. It's called the Last Friend, and through it, Rufus and Mateo are about to meet up for one last great adventure and to live a lifetime in a single day.
What do I think about it?
Mateo Torrez is a very introverted person. He is paranoid and not very social. When he gets the call he doesn't even want to leave his apartment. He is scared that every single situation will be the one that gets him killed. He doesn't ahve many friend, only one and his father. Other than that he feels no one will even miss him. On his last day he wants to LIVE. To do the things he never did when there was actually time to do them. He wants a friend, preferably someone who is going through the same thing.
Rufus Emeterio is the last living member of his family. Both his parents and sister died recently and he is now in a new home. But on the very day he gets the call he was doing something stupid and reckless. Thanks to that during his funeral things go south and he is denied the last opportunity to get his goodbyes and have his final moments with his friends and people that he considers his family now. Not wanting to be alone he signs up for the Last Friend App and through chance he meets Mateo.
Rufus must push Mateo in order to get him to lighten up and live. It is after all their last chance.
From this book, I like:
1- The writing style. Nice and easy to understand, makes a perfect fast paced read like most contemporary books but it isn't overly simplified.
2- The friendship development. It is refreshing to see a YA contemporary focused solely on friendship and not romance. I miss those types of stories. There should be more of them. Ok, it does include a romance between the two main characters, it is expected and sweet but the story is mainly focused on friendship and as a side note it has a romance.
3- Mateo is so awkward in socializing that is endearing. While Rufus, whom in the first half of the books has gotten nothing other than giving company and tagging along Mateo seems very understanding really, most people would become very selfish I assume knowing that they will die in less than 24 hours and wish to do their own things and settle their affair but Rufus doesn't he's mostly ok with following and helping Mateo out.
I still don't like the part where they both die. I mean it IS especified in the title so I can't exactly say I wasn't warned. But it really makes no difference I don't like my main characters dying in the end or the middle of the book really.
I'm going to give this a 4.5 out of 5 stars, because well I always love the story better with a happy ending, regardless of the forewarning included... I still wanted them to be the exception.
