Challenge 4: My Heart and other black holes
Challenge 4: Read a bok about mental illness.
I was debating about several book but in the end I picked a book about depression and suicide that I really didn't know too much about. I usually do one of two things:
1. Thoroughly research a book I'm about to read. By that I mean I read the book description, look it up in good reads.com, see the average rating and take a look at the reviews.
2. Buy or start reading a book on digital version without even glancing at the description.
This time I read the title My heart and other black holes and then I was like it sounds like it talks about depression or some other emotional issues. Yes it fits my criteria. So I ícked it based on the title.... so yeah I do judge the book by the cover or titles alone many times XD
Title: My Heart and other Black Holes
Author: Jasmine Warga
Date published: May 2016
Genre: YA, Contemporary, Mental Illness
Book Description: Sixteen-year-old physics nerd Aysel is obsessed with plotting her own death. With a mother who can barely look at her without wincing, classmates who whisper behind her back, and a father whose violent crime rocked her small town, Aysel is ready to turn her potential energy into nothingness.
There’s only one problem: she’s not sure she has the courage to do it alone. But once she discovers a website with a section called Suicide Partners, Aysel’s convinced she’s found her solution—Roman, a teenage boy who’s haunted by a family tragedy, is looking for a partner.
Even though Aysel and Roman have nothing in common, they slowly start to fill in each other’s broken lives. But as their suicide pact becomes more concrete, Aysel begins to question whether she really wants to go through with it. Ultimately, she must choose between wanting to die or trying to convince Roman to live so they can discover the potential of their energy together.
It is a charming story in the way that you feel the pain both of the teens in it have. I really enjoyed it. At the beginning I was unsure about if I would be able to read it because self harm and suicide are both very - how can I describe it- heav topics, I generally avoid anything with themes like this. But at the same time I felt the need to expore it because sometimes getting out of your confort zone is how you get the best surprises.
I love the characters, both Aysel and Roman. Aysel the typical outcast by choice, now outcast as consequence of social rejection. Roman the last person you would suspect of having issues, a handosme young man, a good athlete, popular; the guy has it all.
They both have too much grief and are dealing with very different turbulent times in their lives, yet the story was about discovering reasons to live not just the teens revolving on their idea of death. Maybe for some people this book is to fluffy and it doesn't really dive too much into the dark abyss of mental distress such as suicide is in real life but I liked this book just because of that.
Depression is a huge dark hole that can leave people even those in the sidelines in a very bad place therefore having the author deal with it in such a light way is a blessing for me. It is obviuos people should read about depression because it is a very real thing but it doesn't have to be a horror story.
I gave this book a 5 out of 5 stars.
It is a book more people shoud read, teens and adults could benefit from the self apreciation Aysel manages to find thanks to Roman. Very worth it!
