Tome Topple Round 10 Wrap up

Image
So the readathon time passed. It was something even if I was not able to read as much as I had intended. I planned on reading: -Elantris, Brandon Sanderson -Stiletto, Daniel O'Malley -The Kingdom of Copper, S.A. Chakraborty -Evolve your brain, Joe Disperza I managed to finish 3 out of them. The first of the books I picked was The Kingdom of Copper by S.A. Chakraborty this is the second book in the Daebavad trilogy.  Nahir is forced to marry the Crown Prince, this is the story of how she manages her life in court, her relationships with the different royalty. The political intrigue and hidden plots Daevas, Jin, etc. We have Ali, the second son making a huge mess of himself and the political situation of the kingdom. We have a lot of issues and things changing. I did not like it as it went through for several reasons, it was well written in the way I was scared for what was going to happen to Nahir, annoyed by the plots happening and the people in the middle Ali and N

People Kill People

Image
Author: Ellen Hopkins Genre: Contemporary Original publication date: September 2018 Book description:  People kill people. Guns just make it easier. A gun is sold in the classifieds after killing a spouse, bought by a teenager for needed protection. But which was it? Each has the incentive to pick up a gun, to fire it. Was it Rand or Cami, married teenagers with a young son? Was it Silas or Ashlyn, members of a white supremacist youth organization? Daniel, who fears retaliation because of his race, who possessively clings to Grace, the love of his life? Or Noelle, who lost everything after a devastating accident, and has sunk quietly into depression? One tense week brings all six people into close contact in a town wrought with political and personal tensions. Someone will fire. And someone will die. But who? Thoughts: I had issues getting into the story, the writing style was not vibing with me for the beginning. Also, the characters were still unknown and annoying me. They a

Author: Richard Matterson  Genre: Sci-Fi Original publication date: 1954 Book description:  Robert Neville is the last living man on Earth ... but he is not alone. Every other man, woman and child on the planet has become a vampire, and they are hungry for Neville's blood. By day he is the hunter, stalking the undead through the ruins of civilisation. By night, he barricades himself in his home and prays for the dawn. How long can one man survive like this? Thoughts: A very short story and yet it was so well done that it leaves you feeling satisfied.  Neville is not the best MC I've ever seen. I was greatly annoyed by him, by his over-sexualized behavior, how could he spend 75 out of less than 200 pages fantasizing about sex, about wanting to defile a corpse if only to feel some release? HE is a man, surely he knew how to masturbate. It gave the feeling the only thing he really missed was sex, and not the company of other human beings.  He never stopped having thos

Now, with Daevabad entrenched in the dark aftermath of the battle that saw Dara slain at Prince Ali’s hand, Nahri must forge a new path for herself, without the protection of the guardian who stole her heart or the counsel of the prince she considered a friend. But even as she embraces her heritage and the power it holds, she knows she’s been trapped in a gilded cage, watched by a king who rules from the throne that once belonged to her familyand one misstep will doom her tribe. Meanwhile, Ali has been exiled for daring to defy his father. Hunted by assassins,

Favorite couples in 2019

Image
The last year I made a list of the ten best couples I have faced so far, so this year we have the top 5 we have read during 2019. As it was a very good reading year we need to still evaluate it using this category. I will not use a ranking from 1 to 5 in any particular order. But I will once more list my couples in genres. Let's begin. YA Graphic Novel The prince and the dressmaker, Jen Wang. This is the story of Prince Sebastian who enjoys to dress up as a lady, yet he hides it from everyone. He meets a dressmaker who becomes his personal designer, Frances.  She accepts him and helps him to be more comfortable in his own skin no matter what he likes or dislikes to dress as.  This is a great story that describes a family, acceptance, and overall a lot of great emotions.  Fantasy . The Chronicles of the One, Nora Roberts. I have not finished the trilogy but have read the first two installments and have several couples that are perfect examples of great couples

Wyrm King, Tony DiTerlizzi & Holy Black. The final book in the beyond the Spiderwick trilogy. The second book ended in an interesting note a danger lurking in the edge! Blue exorcist vol 9 and 10, Kazue Kato the last two books I have access to in this manga series. It is getting interesting so after this month have to decide if to buy or find another way to continue.

El plan infinito (The infinite plan)

Image
Author: Isabel Allende Genre: Historical fiction Original publication date: 1991 Book description: this novel tells the engrossing story of one man's quest for love and for his soul. Thoughts: I am no entirely happy with it. It started ok, but after the first 70 pages, I started to feel like the whole thing was dragging too much. The characters stopped being as interesting to me. Gregory and Carmen were my favorites for most of the story and yet I was very perturbed by the choices they made. The sibling relationship, the marriages described, the parents-children relationship; all types of relationships were very bad examples. Everything was off, it could be ok from the outside and yet it was extremely flawed.  It was too much drama, everything that could be wrong it was, it felt like it just wanted to punch you in the gut, try to shock you. Spoiler, slight: We have incest, rape on several occasions, definitely emotional abuse and "consensual" sex with a pa

Tome Topple Readathon Round 10

So this reading challenge has the sole purpose of getting us to read big books, over 500 pages. I have participated before and I am wanting to do so again but oh the time they fall into, not sure how much reading I will be able to do. There is for the first time prompts for this set in a Bingo Board, but I do not think I will follow that XD I'll just try to read big books in general. Duration: Feb 7 to 20 The books I want to get to: The kingdom of Copper, SA Chakraborty the next part of the Daevabad Trilogy,  a fantasy series featuring djinns. It has 625 pages so it does cover the minimum. Stiletto, Daniel O'Malley the continuation of the rook, this one is a bit shorter it has 583 pages. Evolver your brain, Joe Dispenza. This is a nonfiction book based on science that is a bit out of my normal reading in order to help me try to get to read more varied.  We'll see if more time is available and try to add any additional books, not likely XD

Would I be friends with our literary friendship groups?

Image
February month of Friendship and love and let's face it, there is no romance happening here, let focus on the friendship part. So in this impromptu post, we will pick random book or series and decide if the main character would be people I could be friends with or not. This is not people whom I think are good friends to their existing friends, but if they could become my friends was I in close proximity to them.  Oh its going to get interesting. My favorite series right now. The Raven Cycle . I feel that as much as I like their relationship, they are a very tight group. At least during the duration of the series that's the way it looks.  The book takes place in a relatively small amount of time yet, they do not open up too much to newcomers with specific exceptions. So, in other words, I feel I could not squeeze myself in that friendship group.  Not Friends. I like the type of friends, everyone trying to help each other out, accepting themselves with flaws

Murder at the links

Image
Author: Agatha Christie Series: Hercule Poirot Mysteries #2 Genre:  Mystery Original publication date: May 1923 Book Description (from Good Reads):  Belgian detective Hercule Poirot is summoned to France after receiving a distressing letter with an urgent cry for help. Upon his arrival in Merlinville-Sur-Mer, the investigator finds the man who penned the letter, the South American millionaire Monsieur Renauld, stabbed to death and his body flung into a freshly-dug open grave on the golf course adjoining the property. Meanwhile, the millionaire's wife is found bound and gagged in her room. Apparently, it seems that Renauld and his wife were victims of a failed break-in, resulting in Renauld's kidnapping and death. There's no lack of suspects: his wife, whose dagger served as the weapon; his embittered son, who would have killed for independence; and his mistress, who refused to be ignored - and each felt deserving of the dead man's fortune. The police think they

February TBR

Image
This is the shortest month of the year so I had initially planned a very short TBR. Here is what it resulted. Reread for this month: 1. Days of blood and starlight, Laini Talor. I have to finish the daughter of smoke and bone as I am halfway through anyway. 2. Under red tainted skies, Loiuse Gornal. Draw TBR Game We have a lucky shot, we only have 4 draws to do. #1 Sister's Pick Blue Exorcist Vol 9 Kazue Kato. This is the continuation of a Mana about a group of teenagers who are training to become an exorcist. #2 YA Fantasy Kingdom of Copper S.A Chakraborty. This is the second book of a book  read a while ago, I really was intrigued about the second part, now I need to decide if reread the first one and this one or just jump into it completely blind XD The description of the book says:  Nahri’s life changed forever the moment she accidentally summoned Dara, a formidable, mysterious djinn, during one of her schemes. Whisked from her home in Cairo, she was thrust into
