The Kingdom of Copper
Author: S.A. Chakraborty
Series: The daevabad trilogy #2
Genre: Fantasy
Original publication date: January 2019
Book description: Nahri’s life changed forever the moment she accidentally summoned Dara, a formidable, mysterious djinn, during one of her schemes. Whisked from her home in Cairo, she was thrust into the dazzling royal court of Daevabad and quickly discovered she would need all her grifter instincts to survive there.
Now, with Daevabad entrenched in the dark aftermath of the battle that saw Dara slain at Prince Ali’s hand, Nahri must forge a new path for herself, without the protection of the guardian who stole her heart or the counsel of the prince she considered a friend. But even as she embraces her heritage and the power it holds, she knows she’s been trapped in a gilded cage, watched by a king who rules from the throne that once belonged to her familyand one misstep will doom her tribe.
Meanwhile, Ali has been exiled for daring to defy his father. Hunted by assassins, adrift on the unforgiving copper sands of his ancestral land, he is forced to rely on the frightening abilities the marid, the unpredictable water spirits, have gifted him. But in doing so, he threatens to unearth a terrible secret his family has long kept buried.
Thoughts:
This book I went into it blind, I read the first one in the first few months of 2018. I had no idea what the ending and I just had vague ideas of the plot. But I decided to jump to the second without reading a summary or rereading the book, as I had initially planned.
Bad idea, I was lost for a lot of the time, but it was not bad enough to force me to stop and read the first one before continuing to get through the second.
I hate the family and couple relationships here Ali, Nahir, Mutadir, the king, everyone had issues, ther eis no communication, there is a lot of political intrigue, backstabbing, everyoe has secrets and plot under plot to overthrow, kill or undermine each other.
The characters are k and yet very flawed. There is a sper bad ending for one of the main characters, I hate it actually, you can't act like shit to your family, undermine, distrust, insult, humiliate and yet in th eend of the play say you love them and protect them and get in their good graces, make people forget all the awful way you have behaved towards everyone around you. The husbands and wives here, not a good relationship, not a single good thing about them. The family dynamics, wow they leave a lot to be desired, the father -on father daughter relationship, is weird, it shows no love or actual caring, everything is viewed as a convenient political movement. Hate the family and their behavior among each other.
Other than the characters and their decisions, the plot was very intriguing, all the different players with their own agendas and their hidden plans, well that made it very interesting even if I was angry and annoyed most of the time.
I had a struggle on what to rate it as, I have obviously a huge issue with people's personality and decisions, but still it made sense in a way.
This boook was used for the challenges:
*Good Reads Choice Awards 2019 for fantasy.
*Also in another aspect it is a series continuation a overall goal I am tring to get to this year. I have a lot of series I have started and I have been bad at continuing so I'm working on that. I want to try to either finish or catch up to most of my started series. With this one I am caught up as the third and final installment is released this summer, so I will have to try to get to that one, I hope to remember to try to get it as soon as it comes out.
