El plan infinito (The infinite plan)
Author: Isabel Allende
Genre: Historical fiction
Original publication date: 1991
Book description: this novel tells the engrossing story of one man's quest for love and for his soul.
Thoughts:
I am no entirely happy with it.
It started ok, but after the first 70 pages, I started to feel like the whole thing was dragging too much.
The characters stopped being as interesting to me. Gregory and Carmen were my favorites for most of the story and yet I was very perturbed by the choices they made.
The sibling relationship, the marriages described, the parents-children relationship; all types of relationships were very bad examples. Everything was off, it could be ok from the outside and yet it was extremely flawed.
It was too much drama, everything that could be wrong it was, it felt like it just wanted to punch you in the gut, try to shock you.
Spoiler, slight: We have incest, rape on several occasions, definitely emotional abuse and "consensual" sex with a parental figure, mention of abortion, we have negative sexist behavior, parents double standard for sons and daughters.
Well, there were too many things I felt negatively about, the ones mentioned above are just some of them. The only additional I could add, we have bad parenting overall, everyone makes bad decisions!
I disliked this book a lot, not sure I should have bought it but oh well.
Isabel Allende has plenty of books, maybe this one was not for me.
