These are Y

Author: Laura Vanderkam  Genre: Nonfiction Original publication date: June 12, 2012 Book description:  Mornings are a madcap time for many of us. We wake up in a haze—often after hitting snooze a few times. Then we rush around to get ready and out the door so we can officially start the day. Before we know it, hours have slipped by without us accomplishing anything beyond downing a cup of coffee, dashing off a few emails, and dishing with our coworkers around the water cooler. By the time the workday wraps up, we’re so exhausted and defeated that any motivation to accomplish something in the evening has vanished. But according to time management expert Laura Vanderkam, mornings hold the key to taking control of our schedules. If we use them wisely, we can build habits that will allow us to lead happier, more productive lives. Thoughts: This is a nice short easy to get through reading. In Scribd, I found it in audiobook and it is narrated by the author herself. That alone makes it a

Inuyasha update #4

Image
Author: Rumiko Takahashi Series: Volume 11-14 Book description:   Kagome is a normal high school student living in her traditional house with her mother, little brother, and mother. One day by accident she falls down a sacred water well and ends up in the Feudal era where demons still roam. She is lost but soon finds herself caught up in a quest. After discovering she is in possession of the Shikon no Tama a powerful jewel that is very sought by demons and evil humans. We follow a team of unlikely people Sango, Miroku, and Shippo who join forces with Inuyasha and Kagome in their search and fight against Naraku Thoughts: The story is given to you in episodic style. Each volume has a few chapters where we see new trouble or situation and it is usually resolved by the end of that episode. In case you do not wish for spoilers I'll give a few points of what you can find in the series in a very generic way before diving into a bit more detailed events in each volume. General: -Kagome

Pet Sematary

Author: Stephen King  Genre: Horror Original publication date: November 14, 1983 Book description:  "Sometimes dead is better...." When the Creeds move into a beautiful old house in rural Maine, it all seems too good to be true: physician father, beautiful wife, charming little daughter, adorable infant son—and now an idyllic home. As a family, they’ve got it all...right down to the friendly cat. But the nearby woods hide a blood-chilling truth—more terrifying than death itself...and hideously more powerful Thoughts: Sometimes dead is better. That sure is a phrase you don't hear all the time. I am just very surprised that I had not read this book until now. It is one of the most popular books of his.  Moving on. We start with a family who moves to this small town on Main. They get there and say hello to their neighbors, an elderly couple. The main character is a doctor who is going to work in the University instead of a hospital but he comes off as a bit pretentious. He

Cycle of the werewolf

Image
Author: Stephen King Genre: Horror, Urban fantasy Original publication date: November 1983 Book description: The first scream came from the snowbound railwayman who felt the fangs ripping at his throat. The next month there was a scream of ecstatic agony from the woman attacked in her snug bedroom. Now scenes of unbelieving horror come each time the full moon shines on the isolated Maine town of Tarker Mills. No one knows who will be attacked next. But one thing is sure. When the moon grows fat, a paralyzing fear sweeps through Tarker Mills. For snarls that sound like human words can be heard whining through the wind. And all around are the footprints of a monster whose hunger cannot be sated. Thoughts: This is a very short read. Something you can get through in a single sitting if you have a couple of hours free, it is also a very digestible style. We have short chapters, with an illustration every few pages. We only get a single day each month. We see the life of a few people in

Mist or Fog (Niebla)

Image
Author: Miguel de Unamuno  Genre: Fiction Original publication date: 1914 Book description:   Augusto, a pampered, wealthy intellectual, still reeling two years after his mother's death, was bored with life. Bored, until the day he spotted a girl with beautiful eyes. He falls in love, or does he? This is a very obscure novel or Nivola following Don Augusto after his first encounter with the enigmatic Eugenia. Thoughts: This book I was supposed to read last month. I picked it up, read maybe half a page then put it down for a bit. End of the month, the start of the new year, etc. So I finally pick it up again. So fair warning this was written over 100 years ago. I am sure there is an English translation for this somewhere. The writing style like in many older works is a bit tedious at first.  But then you get into it and it flies through. Fog (Niebla) is a term used plenty in this story. Don Augusto is a very unlikable character. He has a very convenient outtake in most aspects

Murder in Mesopotamia

Image
Series: Hercule Poirot  Author: Agatha Christie Original publication date: July 6, 1936 Genre: Mystery Book description:  When nurse Amy Leatheran agrees to look after American archaeologist Dr Leidner’s wife Louise at a dig near Hassanieh she finds herself taking on more than just nursing duties – she also has to help solve murders. Fortunately for Amy, Hercule Poirot is visiting the excavation site but will the great detective be in time to prevent a multiple murderer from striking again? Thoughts: Again we follow the great Belgium detective Hercule Poirot as he takes it upon himself to investigate a murder. In this case, the story is a bit different as it is told from the perspective of a nurse who was a witness to all that it happened in Mesopotamia.  It picks up way before the murder takes place and before H. Poirot makes an appearance.  The beginning is pretty solid. We follow a group of people who are working in a dig in Mesopotamia. A group of people some old friends and

Physical TBR all unread books starting 2021

I have big plans, big ambitions regarding my books. The downside is that I don't stick to them as much as I would like. But one of the biggest projects right now is to know what is in my library. I want a list of my owned books in every format: traditional, ebook, and audio.  Because I have accidentally bought the same book without realizing it. I am all for buying multiple copies of a book. Sometimes because a version is damaged, I love it so much I want to have it in different formats, to make it easier to read in audio and physical at the same time. It's great when I do it intentionally, but not when I buy them simply because I forgot I already have them. I do not have enough space to display all of my physical books, worse of all I do not have a very good idea of what ebooks or audiobooks I already have across my devices. The reason for this is my lack of organization. The obvious solution is to keep track of my books. I have started, so far the list is only for the physic

Best books of 2020

Image
This list is not of the 2020 released books but only of books, I read for the first time this year. I enjoyed most of the books I read this year but I will include here the ones I absolutely loved, it was very hard to narrow it down. Top 5 favorite books, this are in no particular order but are my favorite read of the year. The First Law trilogy. This is a grimdark fantasy story following a few characters who are fighting in a war with different countries but also internal fights amongst their own people. You fall for the characters, they are not very good people but still, you care about them and their struggles. We follow Logan Ninefingers and his view of the world is very peculiar, a brute in many's standards but with loyalty to a fault. We have Glotka, a character either you love or care for even in his weird moral sense. so many things to catch your eye but so little time to express it! A very character-driven book, slow to get through but very worthy of investing the time.
