The eyes of the dragon

Image
Author: Stephen King  Genre: Fantasy Original publication date: February 2, 1987 Book description:   A kingdom is in turmoil as the old king dies, murdered by a strange and horrible poison. While the land of Delain mourns, the evil wizard Flagg, hatches an unscrupulous plot, which sees the King's eldest son Peter imprisoned for his father's murder, and the youngest son inherit the throne. Only Peter knows the truth about his own innocence and the evil that is Flagg. Only Peter can save Delain from the horror that Flagg has in store. But first, he must escape from the high tower Thoughts: This is a good book. It takes a bit to get into it, but overall it's easy, or let's say not something too complicated. The world has soft magic, it is not very explained and doesn't have strict rules on how it works. We have a huge page count on napkins, if you have read it you will understand.  This is a bit of a mix between a little plot and a lot of character focus. We follo

Dumb witness

Series: Hercule Poirot #16  Author: Agatha Christie Genre: Mystery/Thriller Original publication date: July 5th, 1937 Book description: Everyone blamed Emily’s accident on a rubber ball left on the stairs by her frisky terrier. But the more she thought about her fall, the more convinced she became that one of her relatives was trying to kill her. On April 17th she wrote her suspicions in a letter to Hercule Poirot. Mysteriously he didn’t receive the letter until June 28th… by which time Emily was already dead. Thoughts: It starts off very interesting again. First, we follow the everyday life of Emily an old lady, and her existing family members. She gets into a bit of fright due to an unfortunate accident. The thing is she does not believe it to be a simple accident. So she writes a note to Mr. Poirot, but the note for some reason took a bit of time to reach him. When Poirot gets the letter, he and Mr. Hastings (yes he is back in this one) take a small trip to visit the lady who

Reread #3: The Dream thieves

Series: The Raven boys cycle #2 Author: Maggie Stiefvater Genre: Fantasy Original publication date: September 17, 2013 Book description:   Now that the ley lines around Cabeswater have been woken, nothing for Ronan, Gansey, Blue, and Adam will be the same. Ronan, for one, is falling more and more deeply into his dreams, and his dreams are intruding more and more into waking life. Meanwhile, some very sinister people are looking for some of the same pieces of the Cabeswater puzzle that Gansey is after Thoughts: This is the second book so of course, we have already fallen for the characters. This is a reread so it is even more unfair in that aspect. I was not even planning on rereading this book this month but in the spur of the moment, I decided to go ahead and read it. The first book ends with a huge reveal from Ronan. He discloses that he has the ability to take things out of his dreams. This is not a real spoiler in my opinion as the title is very self-explanatory and well this

The rest of TBR

Image
So the rest of the month I want to read a few more books. First of all, because there are a few series I want to get through this year so I need to do small steps each month towards that goal. Carry on from the previous month: I am still struggling to get through the first book in the Malazan series. I had intended to get through gardens of the moon by Steven Erickson, did I do it? I am intimidated by this book so I have not started. I will not complete it in a single month, so my new goal is to complete it in two months starting in February. The next series I want to continue the faithful and the fallen by John Gwynne I have barely started in January it looks full of prophecies and dark times coming. I need to complete the first and jump right into the second so I don't lose the inspiration for it. The other one I find very intimidating so I have pushed it back, the super long series by Robert Jordan: The other series I am having to catch up as well as the Spellslinger series by

Cards on the table

Series: Hercule Poirot #15 Author: Agatha Christie Genre: Mystery thriller Original publication date: November 2, 1936 Book description:   A flamboyant party host is murdered in full view of a roomful of bridge players… Mr Shaitana was famous as a flamboyant party host. Nevertheless, he was a man of whom everybody was a little afraid. So, when he boasted to Poirot that he considered murder an art form, the detective had some reservations about accepting a party invitation to view Shaitana’s private collection. Indeed, what began as an absorbing evening of bridge was to turn into a more dangerous game altogether. Thoughts: It starts off pretty interesting. As mentioned in the description Mr. Shaitana a very arrogant man invites Mr. Poirot to his house to a private party so he could appreciate his most impressive collection, a murder collection. There are several gusts here, Superintendant Battle, Mr. Poirot, and a few more law-related or murder related people.  The party breaks up

Emerald Green

Series: Precious stone trilogy #3  Author: Kerstin Gier Translator: Anthea Bell Genre: Fantasy Original publication date: December 8, 2010 Book description:  Gwen has a destiny to fulfill, but no one will tell her what it is. She’s only recently learned that she is the Ruby, the final member of the time-traveling Circle of Twelve, and since then nothing has been going right. She suspects the founder of the Circle, Count Saint-German, is up to something nefarious, but nobody will believe her. And she’s just learned that her charming time-traveling partner, Gideon, has probably been using her all along. Emerald Green is the stunning conclusion to Kerstin Gier's Ruby Red Trilogy, picking up where Sapphire Blue left off, reaching new heights of intrigue and romance as Gwen finally uncovers the secrets of the time-traveling society and learns her fate. Thoughts The last book in the trilogy. So again how can you review it without spoiling or just repeating the same thing over and

Walking dead update #4

Image
Author: Robert Kirkman  Genre: Sci-Fi, Horror Original publication date: 2016 Book description:  A group of survivors after a zombie epidemic. They have been living in a world where the dead have risen. The walking dead though is not the main threat, the other humans soon proved to be a far greater enemy. Thoughts: I am getting very close to the ending now. With these two I finally start the fourth compendium. This is finally the time when I finish the series. Maybe after I get to the ending I'll manage to convince myself to get back and start the tv series once more and consume the story that way as well. I am not sure how many seasons there are. I am going to go through the volumes and mention small bits of what is going on, it is a reminder if you have read them a while back or mild spoilers if you have not reached these specific volumes. Let's get to it. Volume 25 No turning back  The end of the previous volume left us hanging in a very dramatic way. The whisperers left

February TBR

Image
I did consider that I should maybe not make TBRs for a bit.  While I decide that, there are still a few readathons I wish to participate on: Buzzwordathon Created by Keyla from Books and Lala you can find the whole information here :  For this month the prompt is: A color Duration 1-7 The book picked for this, the first one that came to mind is the next one in the Raven Boys Cycle by Maggie Stiefvater but that is a reread.  This follows Blue, Ronan, Adam, and Gansey as they as in the quest to find an ancient Welsh King so he can grant them one wish. We have secrets, hired killers, dreamers, and secret fates in the wait for them. You can find the official description here from GoodReads . So we are going to pick a different one. The other book that I want to get to as part of a Series I am in the middle of (we still need to complete more series, after all, I am in the middle of an embarrassing amount of them). This is the final book in a trilogy so I can't really say much without

First Haul 2021- Balance #1

Image
This year started off beautifully. And we are going to do the first actual Balance of our books and TBR books. What did I buy this month? The first purchase was the start of the epic fantasy story Malazan book of the fallen. and also the nonfiction book about stereotypes  So, in this case, are 4 books that I bought. But then I am already cheating, as I found a few books in Kindle (Amazon) that were marked as free and so I couldn't stop myself so I grabbed them. I do not really know what they are about but I added them to my Kindle library as I am planning on reading them at some point or other. I mean they were free, you just can't ignore that. In total I acquired 144 books, I might have been able to get a few more if I continue to search every day. I totally recommend if you have time browse and search for free books. The first issue arose, so the 144 books are new to my TBR but they were not bought so how should I place that in my Balance book scale? -Should I do the 5 I bo

January 2021 Wrap up

I am actually a bit unsure if making this post or not. The last few days I have been seeing a few interesting conversations about the impact and unrealistic expectations people might be getting from reading or watching the content people share about reading. Is it possible that people who see posts like this where the author is reading what most people consider a lot might be building unfair expectations or making themselves feel bad for not reading as much? I hope that is not the case really. I wanted to make a small pause for this. But I have not been able to make a coherent idea to share. So I will not be making a post for it, but the general idea is: I am happy to share what I read and I feel no small amount of pride in completing books and series. That does not mean other people should be reading as much or more than me. This is not a competition, for most people, I included, reading is a hobby. I do it for fun and I hope everyone who does enjoy reading does not place the most i
