Snow like Ashes

by Sara Raasch

Genre: Fantasy
Date published: October 2014.
Book Description: Sixteen years ago the Kingdom of Winter was conquered and its citizens enslaved, leaving them without magic or a monarch. Now, the Winterians’ only hope for freedom is the eight survivors who managed to escape, and who have been waiting for the opportunity to steal back Winter’s magic and rebuild the kingdom ever since.
Orphaned as an infant during Winter’s defeat, Meira has lived her whole life as a refugee, raised by the Winterians’ general, Sir. Training to be a warrior—and desperately in love with her best friend, and future king, Mather — she would do anything to help her kingdom rise to power again.
So when scouts discover the location of the ancient locket that can restore Winter’s magic, Meira decides to go after it herself. Finally, she’s scaling towers, fighting enemy soldiers, just as she’s always dreamed she would. But the mission doesn’t go as planned, and Meira soon finds herself thrust into a world of evil magic and dangerous politics – and ultimately comes to realize that her destiny is not, never has been, her own.

What I thought about it:

For starters, the theme of the countries being divided into the four seasons where the whole year the season is in full blown and people have not just adjusted to the climate but they even have a physical resemblance to their season. Example Winterians are pale and have white hair, people from autumn have a nice tan and darkish hair and so on so forth. The other 4 kingdoms Ventralli, Yakim, Paisly and Cordell where the climate is completely normal, the magic is passed down through conduits the royal families 4 of them through females and 4 have them passed through the male heirs. It is a nice concept. It has equality in a nice way.
The differences between the people, the fighting, the magic, the typical romance between teenagers trapped in your classic love triangle, I mean this book has everything, even the oh now it's wrong you're royalty and I am not kind of issues.... Yet it is awesome.

The main things I love is the way you get the twist, you see it in the first 100 pages, at least you start to guess but then BAM a secret is revealed and you're like oh got it I was wrong and the secret is totally not what I had imagined; then towards the ending you get the big secret revealed and you're like ooh they fooled me I was totally right but then they convinced me  was wrong and the revelation feels completely catches you by surprise.

I loved this book.
I gave this book a nice 5 stars out of 5. I totally loved it! I want to buy this for my best friend so she can read it or at least get the trilogy in Spanish so I can lend it to my friends. Oh the unfortunate decision of buying my books on English and when I so want to speak about them to my friends I can't even lend them because they can't understand.
