The Great Hunt

Author: Wendy Higgins

Genre: YA Fantasy
Series: Eurona Duology #1
Original publication date: March 2016
Book description (from Good Reads):
When a strange beast terrorizes the kingdom of Lochlanach, fear stirs revolt. In an act of desperation, a proclamation is sent to all of Eurona—kill the creature and win the ultimate prize: the daughter of King Lochson’s hand in marriage.
Princess Aerity knows her duty to the kingdom but cannot bear the idea of marrying a stranger... until a brooding local hunter, Paxton Seabolt, catches her attention. There’s no denying the unspoken lure between them... or his mysterious resentment.
Paxton is not the marrying type. Nor does he care much for spoiled royals and their arcane laws. He’s determined to keep his focus on the task at hand—ridding the kingdom of the beast—but the princess continues to surprise him, and the perilous secrets he’s buried begin to surface.

Inspired by the Grimm Brothers’ tale “The Singing Bone,”

This book was picked as part of the O.W.L.s for the challenge Ancient Runes: Retelling.

It is very quick read with an ok romance in my opinion. It is obviously heavily based on the way the princess is falling for a hunter. Aerity is a very naive girl in many ways, never been interested or properly courted for she is not of age to marry. It is full of things a proper lady should and should not do, some are funny to read about, others are plain annoying but it fits the image of the world they live in.
The magic system is not overly explained mainly due to the fact that the Lashed Ones are banned from using their magic, therefore, they do not get too much information on them right away. As the story progresses we get more information on their abilities and their limitations.
Aerity is almost too good to be true, but she is not perfect she is very self-centered in a way that she starts to see the injustice in her land only when she is directly affected and not before. Even if she does see that she is more privileged and tries to be the voice of reason among her siblings she is still too sheltered and does not see it immediately. But she does show maturity and caring about her people, she is described almost too perfect, a caring sister, a good daughter, a kind soon to-be-queen who does not discriminate based on the bloodline, nobility or commoner or caring if they are Lashed ones or from foreign lands.
The storyline is a bit predictable but still enjoyable.
The world is not explored in detail everything takes place in the forest surrounding a specific kingdom but it really does not seem like it's necessary you get the vibes of the world, it is a medieval setting, not many details seem to be lacking.
It has a good ending not too nerve-wracking but it is enough so that you wish to see the next installment to the actual end of the threat. The funny thing is that like it happens in movies and plenty of other stories, they could have maybe resolved it if they simply take care of the enemy in the first place but they let the chance slip by.  Oh well, it is a duology so in the next one, everything will the wrapped up.
