November 2020 Book Haul

Image
I wanted to be strong again and not buy too many physical books as my stack of unread books is already enormous. But then things like Black Friday come in and I just couldn't stop myself.  There were some books I really was planning on reading in November so I was going to buy a few in digital format, but still, I went ahead and bought some physical ones as well.  So beginning with Kindle: Saint's Blood by Sebastien de Castell the third book in the Greatcoats series. At least I did read this one. We continue with Falcio and the remaining Greatcoats. They have been betrayed, hunted, and almost killed but they have to keep going. They're very unlucky indeed. You can find a few more of my thoughts in the book review right here . Next, I bought a few more children books I plan on reading to my niece. As she is not even close to understanding English I have picked Alina the monster hunter  (Alina cazadora de monstruos) by Anne Aband. I have no idea what this is about but I am

Walking dead update #3

Image
Author: Robert Kirkman Genre: Sci-Fi, Dystopian, Horror Publication date: 2014-2015 Book description: A group of survivors after a zombie epidemic. They have been living in a world where the dead have risen. The walking dead though is not the main threat, the other humans soon proved to be a far greater enemy.  Thoughts: I am getting very close to the ending now. With volume 24 I finish the third compendium and only one more left to read. This is finally the time when I finish the series. Maybe after I get to the ending I'll manage to convince myself to get back and start the tv series once more and consume the story that way as well. I am not sure how many seasons there are.  I am going to go through the volumes and mention small bits of what is going on, it is a reminder if you have read them a while back or mild spoilers if you have not reached these specific volumes. Let's get to it. Volume 22 Time has passed, there is peace between Hilltop, The Kingdom, The Saviors, an

The only Good Indians

Image
Author: Stephen Graham Jones  Genre: Horror, Fantasy Original publication date: July 14, 2020 Book description:  Seamlessly blending classic horror and a dramatic narrative with sharp social commentary, The Only Good Indians follows four American Indian men after a disturbing event from their youth puts them in a desperate struggle for their lives. Tracked by an entity bent on revenge, these childhood friends are helpless as the culture and traditions they left behind catch up to them in a violent, vengeful way Thoughts: This has a weak start for me. It starts with a man living his life very commonly with his wife. They have very obvious differences, she is not a native but they do not care. Except they do and that small difference is wedged between them.  But soon you start to see there is something. He is tormented by a hunt he and his friends participated in. They hunted in a forbidden area and they made such a massacre that years later is his biggest regret.  HE faces a few is

Murder on the Orient Express

Image
Series: Hercule Poirot #10  Author: Agatha Christie Genre: Mystery/Thriller Original publication date: 1934 Book description: Just after midnight, a snowdrift stops the Orient Express in its tracks. The luxurious train is surprisingly full for the time of the year, but by the morning it is one passenger fewer. An American tycoon lies dead in his compartment, stabbed a dozen times, his door locked from the inside. Isolated and with a killer in their midst, detective Hercule Poirot must identify the murderer—in case he or she decides to strike again. Thoughts: Again we find Mr. Hercule Poirot involved by mere chance in the mystery of the year.  He is on a train ride back home but first, he will stop for a small vacation, he did just resolve a huge mystery. On the way there he meets an old friend of his who just so happens is part of the board of director in charge of the line. It is unusually full to be an offseason time of the year so Mr. Poirot is forced to ride in a compartment

Why didn't they ask Evans?

Image
Author: Agatha Christie Genre: Mystery/Thriller Original publication date: September 1934 Book description:  Was it a misstep that sent a handsome stranger plummeting to his death from a cliff? Or something more sinister? Fun-loving adventurers Bobby Jones and Frances Derwent's suspicions are certainly roused-especially since the man's dying words were so peculiar: Why didn't they ask Evans? Bobby and Frances would love to know. Unfortunately, asking the wrong people has sent the amateur sleuths running for their lives on a wild and deadly pursuit to discover who Evans is, what it was he wasn't asked, and why the mysterious inquiry has put their own lives in mortal danger Thoughts: It starts, as usual, it starts with a few people find a man who fell down a cliff. He is barely alive and they scramble to try to find help. It is too late before the help is sought he dies a few minutes later. The last few words: "Why didn't they ask Evans?" Who is Evans?

Inuyasha update

Image
Author: Rumiko Takahashi Series: Volumes 9 and 10 Original Publication date: 2001 Book description: Kagome a high school living a normal life in the company of her family is transported to Feudal Japan where demons still roam the land. She discovers she is the reincarnation of Kikyo, a priestess that was guarding the Shikon No Tama a very sought-after jewel with mystical powers.  Accidentally Kagome shatters the jewel and it's scattered throughout the land. Now Kagome must find the jewel before it lands in the wrong hands.  Thoughts: This time I have read very little so I am going to make a review of only two volumes. As I have mentioned before, there is no way to do a review even if I am vague in the adventures the gang faces it is spoilers obviously.  Volume 9 The gang continues the fight against Kana and Kagura Naraku's underlings. The townspeople are still being used as a human shield as Inuyasha can't fight without the risk of killing them accidentally. When the fi

End of the year book tag

Image
This is maybe a bit late. I have seen this tag going around on YouTube for a little while now. So I took it upon myself to try it. Questions: Are there any books you started this year that you need to finish? I have started several but the ones I am working on getting through The way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson. This epic fantasy series everyone has read already. So I want to jump to the hype, I have read maybe 100 pages, and its 1200ish pages, so I have made very small insignificant progress. We have a war, a king was killed and now e have soldiers, slaves and still not sure what's going on. Do you have an autumnal book to transition into the end of the year? Not really, also right now it is halfway through November, and in my area, the temperature is still 20°C most days, so for me, it is still not very autumn but oh well. I never read seasonally so I have never tried to find a book to fit any season. Is there a new release you're still waiting for? The book that comes

Ship of Magic

Image
Series: The liveship traders #1  Author: Robin Hobb Original publication date: March 1998 Book description: Ship of Magic begins an epic tale of pirates, sentient ships, magic, sea serpents, slave revolts, dashing heroes and bloody battles. On the northernmost point of the Cursed Shores lies Bingtown, a bustling hub of exotic trade and home to a proud merchant nobility famed for its extraordinary vessels. Only Bingtown liveships can negotiate the perilous waters of the Rain Wild River and plunder the riches found upstream, but such vessels are made from the most precious commodity in the world – a material with the ability to become sentient – and so are extremely rare. The fortunes of one of Bingtown’s oldest families rest on the newly awakened liveship Vivacia. For Althea Vestrit, the ship is her rightful legacy. But the fate of Vivacia – and the Vestrits – may ultimately lie in the hands of the dark and charming pirate, Kennit, who lusts after such a ship and has plans of his

Armando de Hoyos

Image
Full title: Armando de Hoyos: the unauthorized biography  Author: Eugenio Derbez Original publication date: January 1, 1995 Book description: None, this is a completely fictional book about the life of a fictional character Armando de Hoyos. Armando de Hoyos is a character of a comedy show. It contains a few details about his life, philosophical questions, and beliefs he rules his life by. Thoughts: It's all full of nonsense. If you do not like black jokes, a few insensitive word choice, a few very funny wordplay here and there. The jokes go from dad jokes, slightly bad ones, and a few gems. I am not expecting there to be a translation at any time. The main reason is that all of the jokes are based on popular beliefs, pop culture and will only be understood by people who saw the show probably.  Truth be told I missed 50% of the jokes the first time around (maybe more but who is paying attention?) but is funny when passing the book around a group of people and some getting it and

1000 door readathon prompt 5

Image
We are going strong. The book for prompt 4 is complete. So we go back to the video and see what the question is. Did you enjoy the setting? Yes - https://youtu.be/LNzjst0k66I   Kinda - https://youtu.be/ydbTvncdX9g   No - https://youtu.be/6x6uIoCfJD0   DNF - https://youtu.be/xK1o3TYwwH4 For me of course, I love it! So we go to the video for the next prompt. I am very excited about this. It is still very early in the month but I feel I can read at a faster pace if I try to get a prompt a day. I did slow down for a bit but let's pick up the pace. Prompt 5: Language. There are a few interpretations here: -A book/series that has its own alphabet or language.  -Book featuring new vocabulary or made-up words for the story. -Translated works - In my case, I might pick to read a book in Spanish as I have been trying to read more of them.  Again little break so I can walk around my room trying to figure out what to read. I have finally made my pick. I went around and picked a comedy book b

Saint's blood

Image
Series: Greatcoats #3  Author: Sebastien de Castell Original publication date: April 7, 2016 Book description: How do you kill a Saint? Falcio, Kest, and Brasti are about to find out, because someone has figured out a way to do it and they've started with a friend. The Dukes were already looking for ways out of their agreement to put Aline on the throne, but with the Saints turning up dead, rumours are spreading that the Gods themselves oppose her ascension. Now churches are looking to protect themselves by bringing back the military orders of religious soldiers, assassins, and (especially) Inquisitors - a move that could turn the country into a theocracy. The only way Falcio can put a stop to it is by finding the murderer. He has only one clue: a terrifying iron mask which makes the Saints vulnerable by driving them mad. But even if he can find the killer, he'll still have to face him in battle. And that may be a duel that no swordsman, no matter how skilled, can hope to wi

Do I have that Other book challenge

Image
This is the second version of the challenge/tag. The prompts were created by Tabby and Danny, their channels linked down below Dani from the Current chapter Tabby from Keeping tabs Dani's Channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCdhY...   Dani's Tag Video: https://youtu.be/K8E3Aj4V0SY   The Questions:  1. Do you have a book with a fox on the cover or part of the plot?   I am not sure if it participates in the story but I did find a book that has a fox on the cover. I have not read it as it is the 5th book in a series really.  This features accidental time travel or portal magic something like that. Polly transported to a past where the fights and is trapped in a situation where human sacrifice is a real threat to her existence. 2. Do you have a book that was published the year you were born, or within a 3-year radius?   I have a book published the same year I was born. The Firm by John Grisham.  Mitch McDeere is young, intelligent and ambitious. When he gets a job with the la
