Book Description (Goodreads):
Sixteen-year-old Starr Carter moves between two worlds: the poor neighborhood where she lives and the fancy suburban prep school she attends. The uneasy balance between these worlds is shattered when Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer. Khalil was unarmed.
Soon afterward, his death is a national headline. Some are calling him a thug, maybe even a drug dealer and a gangbanger. Protesters are taking to the streets in Khalil's name. Some cops and the local drug lord try to intimidate Starr and her family. What everyone wants to know is: what really went down that night? And the only person alive who can answer that is Starr.
But what Starr does or does not say could upend her community. It could also endanger her life.

Things to consider:

  1. Plot: 9.5
    1. The story is somewhat fast-paced and slow-paced at the same time, why because it starts right off with a huge event obviously. But from there it takes on different directions it comes with teen drama, boyfriends issues, friends issues, family drama... It has a lot more drama than what I expected. I took a lot of time to get through it because the drama gets to me and so I think more about picking it up to continue.
    2. The plot does not have huge twists nor it contains amazing revelations, it is not that kind of book. Mainly is the story of self-discovery finally accepting herself for what she does and avoids in the "different" aspects of her life; of making the difficult decisions and feeling those decisions shape a lot more of the family life than Starr had anticipated.
    3. The family dynamic not only the close family but the extended family is awesome, it has drama and struggles just like any other family, but they work and try to overcome it.
  2. Characters: 9.5
    1. Starr is a teenager, she thinks herself very smart and thinks she makes the best decisions. Obviously, throughout the book she realizes that not only the people around her have flaws and narrow vision or mindset, but she also has part-taken in some of the discriminative or overly assuming things about other people around her. She grows as a person and she allows herself to see her shortcomings and decides to try to change for the better.
    2. Starr parents also have some issues among themselves ad Starr Dad, Marv, especially has a big eye-opening happen to him throughout the story.
    3. The other characters also have a nice development, the friends you grow up with can turn out to be not the best pals you had imagined and yet sometimes you can fail to see the greatest qualities in them.  Starr learned to appreciate her family and friends a lot more as she went through the difficult system along her way to seek justice.
  3. Logic: 9.5
    1. The main characters are teenagers and even when something huge happens and the struggle to get justice is going on the teenagy drama continues. Can't complain really it is very realistic the way things go with Starr and her friends, siblings, and boyfriend. I liked it, it was not only about the fight, the telling the truth to the police, but it also shows the other aspect as well. The lives of the people involved continues and they carry on with not only what happened but with other struggles as well. Facing discrimination disguised is still discrimination and just like it is shown people don't always own up to their actions and feel offended to be called out on them. Not always people see the wrong of their ways and you can't really change that for better or for worse that's the way they are.
    2. The actions taken by Starr and her siblings, do make sense. Sometimes you might feel it was not the best call, like changing who you are for the sake of belonging, like caring too much about people's opinion of you. That's a very taxing way to live and you shouldn't have to do it, but it really can't be helped, you need to learn as you go how much it matters what others see you like. No one can really make you understand without you living through it.
  4. Intrigue: 8.0
    1. I felt that there really wasn't too much excitement on the resolution of the book, because you could tell the resolution the justice was going to have. What was good to see develop was the way Starr, her family, and friends were doing as it approached.
    2. The way everyone, not just Starr reacted to the resolution, the way people stand up together or make things worse for themselves, the way you fight is the thing that was important here.
  5. Intention: 10.0
    1. The intention is for people to see, to see the wrong of their actions; not only the people who are racist, or discriminate in any way are wrong, sometimes just making the assumptions, the "harmless" jokes, those actions still promote discrimination.
    2. The lack of actions is also bad, if you can't speak out to help those who can't then nothing is going to change. Yes, it might be a long difficult way, maybe the result will still be one you disapprove but if you don't try then things are surely not going to get better or change. The first fight is not always won, but nothing has ever come easy especially the changes for better, that road is always slow moving and it requires a lot of people in order to make the necessary progress to be noticeable.
  6. Writing style: 10.0
    1. The writing style is not something I can complain about, I like the way it is explained and even if it might have been awesome if other perspectives were included, the fact that it all came from Starr's eyes gave the story a bit more of a realistic feel to it. It felt more like she tellings her life story, it makes you feel it more.
  7. Enjoyment: 8.0
    1. Again so much drama is not my favorite but I see why the story had to go the way it did. It was very realistic and that does not always mean that you will like the way life goes, it is full of not so great turns before getting to better places.
