Buzzwordathon Round 4

Image
Duration: June12-18 This is the readathon that Kayla from books and lala has been doing for a bit now.  So I will leave here the announcement. The chosen word this time will be: My picked TBR: * Since you 've been gone, Morgan Matson - A YA nice summer read, that has been sitting in my TBR for almost a year and a half. I hope it's a fast read. * Girl wash you r face, Rachel Hollis. This is a book I saw mentioned in a TBR or wrap up, can't be sure really. It should be about self-acceptance and it will help me with my personal challenge to read more non-fiction. *P.S. You r cat is dead, James Kirkwood Jr. This seems like a funny YA story about someone having a slight downtime that promises to be hilarious to read about.  * This is how you lose her, Junor Diaz. This seems like a good choice, summer is for romance stories so this seems like a good choice. Translation: I have no idea what this is about but I fond it by chance and picked it XD

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy

Together this dynamic pair begin a journey through space aided by quotes from The Hitchhiker's Guide ("A towel is about the most massively useful thing an interstellar hitchhiker can have") and a galaxy-full of fellow travelers: Zaphod Beeblebrox—the two-headed, three-armed ex-hippie and totally out-to-lunch president of the galaxy; Trillian, Zaphod's girlfriend (formally Tricia McMillan), whom Arthur tried to pick up at a cocktail party once upon a time zone; Marvin, a paranoid, brilliant, and chronically depressed robot; Veet Voojagig, a former gradua

Our endless numbered days

Image
Author: Claire Fuller Original Publication date: February 2015 Genre: Fiction Book description (from Good Reads):  Peggy Hillcoat is eight years old when her survivalist father, James, takes her from their home in London to a remote hut in the woods and tells her that the rest of the world has been destroyed. Deep in the wilderness, Peggy and James make a life for themselves. They repair the hut, bathe in water from the river, hunt and gather food in the summers and almost starve in the harsh winters. They mark their days only by the sun and the seasons. When Peggy finds a pair of boots in the forest and begins a search for their owner, she unwittingly begins to unravel the series of events that brought her to the woods. Thoughts: This is told in two time periods, the present after Peggy is back with her mother and how she is facing the time back among society. She is very conflicted about how she feels about her father and her time away.  It is at first confusing, you start t

I give up

It's literally midway of May.  I had several issues, very little time for reading, the stress of work and to top it all Scribd played a bad move on me.  Suddenly all the audiobooks were removed from me until after the 30th... I was super surprised and not in a good way.  I had seen a lot of people complain about Scribd having fake advertisement and that it didn't really have unlimited access as it claimed but I had ignored them. I mean mostly I thought that it gave you the option to choose from the most recent releases in a limited way but the rest of the books, older titles were not affected like this. I was wrong. I picked in my TBR several, most of my books from Scribd and also most in audio format. But then around the maybe 12 - 13 I noticed one of my books was not available and I thought to myself, oh damn I made a mistake it was not on audiobook. Oh well, and I picked another one to replace it. But then the next one was also no available. That made me suspicious, so

SFF Best Friends

Image
Today's topic is to talk about the people who you could possibly be your best friend. * Richard Gansey, Adam Parish, Blue Sargent and Ronan Lynch from the Raven Cycle . Gansey is the type of person you can easily be friends with, he is someone who stands with his friends and gives uttermost trust and support to them. Adam even in his self-doubt always tries to be there for them. Blue is a girl who can trust and accepts friends with all their good and annoying traits and expects them to be the same. * Locke Lamora from the Gentleman Bastard series. Locke is a criminal but he gives his all to the people who he considers his friends. Ricking his life if necessary for them. From the Gentleman Bastards, we can see how a family can be found in friends regardless of the ethics of their day job.  * Magnus Chase From the Gods of Asgard. He is a very down to earth teen who seems to gain people's trust and is definitely not judgemental of others even if he doesn't 100% sha

Delirium

Image
Author: Lauren Oliver Series: Delirium #1 Genre: Dystopian Original Publication date: February 2011 Book description (from Good Reads):  In the United States, love has been declared a dangerous disease, and the government forces everyone who reaches eighteen to have a procedure called the Cure. Living with her aunt, uncle, and cousins in Portland, Maine, Lena Haloway is very much looking forward to being cured and living a safe, predictable life. She watched love destroy her mother and isn't about to make the same mistake. But with ninety-five days left until her treatment, Lena meets enigmatic Alex, a boy from the Wilds who lives under the government's radar. What will happen if they do the unthinkable and fall in love?  Thoughts: Alex is a mysterious guy, whom we do not get to know much about other than he falls for the girl very hard and very fast. Lena is a very classical girl who is not sure about herself and always has accepted the ideal the country has preached

Th Wicked + the Divine Vol. 1

Image
Author: Kieron Gillen Original Publication date: November 2014 Book description (from Good Reads): Every ninety years, twelve gods incarnate as humans. They are loved. They are hated. In two years, they are dead. The team behind critical tongue-attractors like Young Avengers and PHONOGRAM reunite to create a world where gods are the ultimate pop stars and pop stars are the ultimate gods. But remember: just because you’re immortal, doesn’t mean you’re going to live forever. This issue includes volume 1 through 5 It has a very intriguing premise but the execution was simply ok. The art is awesome, I like the colors and such but the story itself is just average it tries to have a few jokes, but the overall plot I am not sure what is trying to do.  I see some of the things like making the gods inhabit mortal bodies, it's kind of ok, but they're not all gods some are angels, so why call them all gods?  Oh well technicalities, it an entertaining read.  The normal girl wh

Dissapointing reads of the week

The Siren  Author: Kiera Cass Genre: YA Fantasy Original Publication date: July 2009 Book Description (from Good Reads):  "You must never do anything that might expose our secret. This means that, in general, you cannot form close bonds with humans. You can speak to us, and you can always commune with the Ocean, but you are deadly to humans. You are, essentially, a weapon. A very beautiful weapon. I won't lie to you, it can be a lonely existence, but once you are done, you get to live. All you have to give, for now, is obedience and time..." The same speech has been given hundreds of times to hundreds of beautiful girls who enter the sisterhood of sirens. Kahlen has lived by these rules for years now, patiently waiting for the life she can call her own. But when Akinli, a human, enters her world, she can't bring herself to live by the rules anymore. Suddenly the life she's been waiting for doesn't seem nearly as important as the one she's living now

Its supreme leader, The One Who Is The One, has banned everything they hold dear: books, music, art, and imagination. But the growing strength of the siblings' magic hasn't been enough to stop the One's evil rampage, and now he's executed the only family they had left. Wisty knows that the time has finally come for her to face The One. But her fight and her fire only channel more power to this already invincible being. How can she and Whit possibly prepare for their imminent showdown with the ruthless villain that devastated their world-before he can truly become all-powerful? Thoughts: Unfortunately, the story is each time getting more and more an

Animal Farm

Image
Author: George Orwell  Genre: Fiction, Classics First published: August 1945 Book description (from Good Reads):  A farm is taken over by its overworked, mistreated animals. With flaming idealism and stirring slogans, they set out to create a paradise of progress, justice, and equality. Thus the stage is set for one of the most telling satiric fables ever penned –a razor-edged fairy tale for grown-ups that records the evolution from revolution against tyranny to a totalitarianism just as terrible. When Animal Farm was first published, Stalinist Russia was seen as its target. Today it is devastatingly clear that wherever and whenever freedom is attacked, under whatever banner, the cutting clarity and savage comedy of George Orwell’s masterpiece have a meaning and message still ferociously fresh. Thoughts: I was scared to get into this story and because of that, I put it off for a long time.  Ok so this was not assigned reading for me so I read it on my on and while I did get

The Prince and the dressmaker

Image
Author: Jen Wang Genre: Graphic novel Original publication date: February 2018 Book description (from Good Reads):  Paris, at the dawn of the modern age: Prince Sebastian is looking for a bride―or rather, his parents are looking for one for him. Sebastian is too busy hiding his secret life from everyone. At night he puts on daring dresses and takes Paris by storm as the fabulous Lady Crystallia―the hottest fashion icon in the world capital of fashion! Sebastian’s secret weapon (and best friend) is the brilliant dressmaker Frances―one of only two people who know the truth: sometimes this boy wears dresses. But Frances dreams of greatness, and being someone’s secret weapon means being a secret. Forever. How long can Frances defer her dreams to protect a friend? Thoughts: It is like a Cinderella type of story with a nice twist. The characters are likable and interesting, fighting for their dreams and trying to be accepted. It is a very heart-warming story with a nice message. T

Mother Figures

Image
So when I first saw this prompt I was like oh yeah, this sounds like fun, but after a small consideration, I realized I have very few options that come to mind. But I will make my best attempt. I might come up with very few choices and after I post it, I will remember later XD *Maura Sargent, from the Raven Boys So she is a very nonclassical mother figure. She is permissive, caring and protective of her only daughter. I really like her even if she does not come into the picture as much, and tries to keep her daughter save even if she is unsure of what the real danger is. *Sally Jackson, from Percy Jackson and the lighting thief. She is a very remarkable woman, she is trying to keep her son safe against all odds even against otherworldly beings.  *Maryse Lightwood, from the Shadowhunter series.  So she is a very proud woman, with plenty of prejudice but she is a strong woman and is willing to change for the sake of her children.  *Eleanor West, from Every heart a doorway. S

The Lovely Bones

Image
Author: Alice Sebold  Genre: Magical Realism, Paranormal, Contemporary, Fantasy Original Publication date: September 2006 Book Description (from Good Reads):  The details of the crime are laid out in the first few pages: from her vantage point in heaven, Susie Salmon describes how she was confronted by the murderer one December afternoon on her way home from school. Lured into an underground hiding place, she was raped and killed. But what the reader knows, her family does not. Anxiously, we keep vigil with Susie, aching for her grieving family, desperate for the killer to be found and punished. Sebold creates a heaven that's calm and comforting, a place whose residents can have whatever they enjoyed when they were alive -- and then some. But Susie isn't ready to release her hold on life just yet, and she intensely watches her family and friends as they struggle to cope with a reality in which she is no longer a part.  Thoughts: Susie, even from the beginning where you

Bookish Things I've Changed My Mind About

Image
So this is the very first time I will attempt to get the Top 5 Wednesday topics a try. #1 Audio and ebooks. I had initially thought that those type of formats were not for me, mainly audio. Now I love them! I try to find all my books in audio if possible.   #2 Making video/blog about books will encourage me to read more. Actually, it is not like it does not inspire me, but the pressure of having to write the blogs or try to get the courage to film, well it can be counterproductive. The intimidation stops me. Also, they take time away from my reading  #3 Reviewing books is fun! After trying to do reviews I realize they are not my thing. I find it hard to organize my thoughts in a way that make sense to others and worse still... If I get too into it I can't stop from spoiling things Jajaja, so I have to be super careful and that makes it a tedious, slow process.  #4 Writing in books. I used to make small notations on post it or pieces of paper and then just placed them in t

I Hear The Sunspot

Image
Author: Yuki Fumino Genre: Manga, Contemporary Original Publication date: November 2017 Book description (from Good Reads): Because of a hearing disability, Kohei is often misunderstood and has trouble integrating into life on campus, so he learns to keep his distance. That is until he meets the outspoken and cheerful Taichi. He tells Kohei that his hearing loss is not his fault. Taichi's words cut through Kohei's usual defense mechanisms and open his heart. More than friends, less than lovers, their relationship changes Kohei forever. This book was chosen mainly because of the Asian Readathon, it was mentioned as a recommendation for the challenges. Also, It was on Scribd, so I picked it. Oh, boy was I glad I did.  It is a lovely story, about two people who meet by chance become unlikely friends and feelings start to develop. Not so great was the fact that there was no clear relationship between them. Just like the summary suggests, there are feelings yet what ar
