Elevation

Author: Stephen King
Genre: Magical Realism
Original publication date: October 2018
Bok description (from Good Reads): Although Scott Carey doesn’t look any different, he’s been steadily losing weight. There are a couple of other odd things, too. He weighs the same in his clothes and out of them, no matter how heavy they are. Scott doesn’t want to be poked and prodded. He mostly just wants someone else to know, and he trusts Doctor Bob Ellis.
In the small town of Castle Rock, the setting of many of King’s most iconic stories, Scott is engaged in a low grade—but escalating—battle with the lesbians next door whose dog regularly drops his business on Scott’s lawn. One of the women is friendly; the other, cold as ice. Both are trying to launch a new restaurant, but the people of Castle Rock want no part of a gay married couple, and the place is in trouble. When Scott finally understands the prejudices they face–including his own—he tries to help. Unlikely alliances, the annual foot race, and the mystery of Scott’s affliction bring out the best in people who have indulged the worst in themselves and others.

Thoughts:
So the first story was about a man called Scott who is very average in every aspect until one day he begins to notice he has more energy and is moving better but no difference in his aspect is visible. The story is short but it is just a slice of life with a bit of magic thrown in. Scott is trapped in what is happening to him and also in a personal struggle trying to get close to the couple living close to his house. He goes through a change in his attitude towards them and tries to get the community as a whole to be more accepting of them as well.

I really enjoyed it but I find it hard to describe, it is too short to be able to describe without giving too much away. It is a very fast read.

A good short story to enjoy.

The second short story that is was included was another slice of life about a man who became a widow and is barely coping. His sister makes him a gift, a puppy to try to get him to get more active and start doing something with his life.
It is again a simple short story.

I liked them but I do not see the reason why this could be labeled as Horror, I saw it in the Horror genre, yet it is not. Neither of the stories seems fit for that genre in specific.
But still, I did pick this up because of the GoodReads choice awards 2018 Challenge if I had not been participating in it I might not have picked it up, at least not any time soon. The description was simple but nothing that caught my eye so much. But I was surprised in a good way. I enjoyed it more than I expected.

Doubling it up, also used this book for the SailoMoonathon Sailor Saturn- Read a stand-alone.
