Delirium
Author: Lauren Oliver
Series: Delirium #1
Genre: Dystopian
Original Publication date: February 2011
Book description (from Good Reads): In the United States, love has been declared a dangerous disease, and the government forces everyone who reaches eighteen to have a procedure called the Cure. Living with her aunt, uncle, and cousins in Portland, Maine, Lena Haloway is very much looking forward to being cured and living a safe, predictable life. She watched love destroy her mother and isn't about to make the same mistake.
But with ninety-five days left until her treatment, Lena meets enigmatic Alex, a boy from the Wilds who lives under the government's radar. What will happen if they do the unthinkable and fall in love?
Thoughts:
Alex is a mysterious guy, whom we do not get to know much about other than he falls for the girl very hard and very fast. Lena is a very classical girl who is not sure about herself and always has accepted the ideal the country has preached her whole life never putting it to question, not even when her friend starts to act out and tries to defy the system.
It has a very interesting premise of how the world would be if the government suddenly decided that living was dangerous and that it can be cured by altering people's mind. I love that and the way it shows how most people actually believe and never question the government and the propaganda they're fed, it is a very realistic portrayal.
I just had some issues with the romance developing here and the very bad decisions and insecurity shown in Lena mostly. It is definitely not the worst instalove, but most of the story is based on it, well if that part was not really to my liking it does put a big damper on my enjoyment of the overall story.
Lena acts very childishly and Alex does not seem to be as mature as a person would be if he really was a man always on the run whose life purpose is to fight against a controlling government.
I gave this a 3-star rating.
