Animal Farm
Author: George Orwell
Genre: Fiction, Classics
First published: August 1945
Book description (from Good Reads): A farm is taken over by its overworked, mistreated animals. With flaming idealism and stirring slogans, they set out to create a paradise of progress, justice, and equality. Thus the stage is set for one of the most telling satiric fables ever penned –a razor-edged fairy tale for grown-ups that records the evolution from revolution against tyranny to a totalitarianism just as terrible. When Animal Farm was first published, Stalinist Russia was seen as its target. Today it is devastatingly clear that wherever and whenever freedom is attacked, under whatever banner, the cutting clarity and savage comedy of George Orwell’s masterpiece have a meaning and message still ferociously fresh.
Thoughts:
I was scared to get into this story and because of that, I put it off for a long time.
Ok so this was not assigned reading for me so I read it on my on and while I did get the fact symbolism of stuff my lack of knowledge of Russian Revolution did not help make the ideas fit that particular time frame or ideology. In my point of view, it shows the corruption of power. Regardless of the purpose, it served when first written it this story can be applied to any ideology.
Yes fighting a corrupt, unfair regimen or idea does not make your own fair. Once someone is in power, they can like the pigs start making their own distinctions, they can make people more or consider better for whatever standard they want.
This is a magnificent story... I thoroughly enjoyed it. Even in audio format, it was a great way to take it in.
