My Sister's Keeper

Image
Author: Jodi Picoult Genre: Contemporary Original Publication date: April 2004 Book Description (from Good Reads):  Anna is not sick, but she might as well be. By age thirteen, she has undergone countless surgeries, transfusions, and shots so that her older sister, Kate, can somehow fight the leukemia that has plagued her since childhood. The product of preimplantation genetic diagnosis, Anna was conceived as a bone marrow match for Kate—a life and a role that she has never challenged... until now. Like most teenagers, Anna is beginning to question who she truly is. But unlike most teenagers, she has always been defined in terms of her sister—and so Anna makes a decision that for most would be unthinkable, a decision that will tear her family apart and have perhaps fatal consequences for the sister she loves. A provocative novel that raises some important ethical issues, My Sister's Keeper is the story of one family's struggle for survival at all human costs and a stunnin

Descendants: A Twisted Field Trip

Author: Jen Vaugh Genre: Graphic Novel Original Publication date: September 2018 Book Description: After Descendants 2 the students are having a nice relaxing Friday and planning their wonderful free time when the usual gang, Mal, Eve, Jay, Carlos, Chad, King Ben, and fairy godmother's daughter are selected to go to a weekend camp to learn to work together.  Thoughts: Not sure how to rate graphic novels. The drawings felt too childlike in a way. Might be nothing, they were well-drawn and the colors (it was a full-color novel) were great, but after picturing the characters as living people and then seeing them as cartoons, it seemed out of place.  It was a very short story, not much happened, it felt like a single episode of an ongoing Disney show.  There was really no plot, no high stakes just a nice way to see the characters you already know and spend more time with them. This was the very last thing I picked up, it ended up being much shorter than expected. But it was a

The Mark of Athena

Image
Author: Rick Riordan  Genre: YA Fantasy Original Publication date: October 2012 Book description:  Annabeth is terrified. Just when she's about to be reunited with Percy—after six months of being apart, thanks to Hera—it looks like Camp Jupiter is preparing for war. As Annabeth and her friends Jason, Piper, and Leo fly in on the Argo II, she can't blame the Roman demigods for thinking the ship is a Greek weapon. With its steaming bronze dragon figurehead, Leo's fantastical creation doesn't appear friendly. Annabeth hopes that the sight of their praetor Jason on deck will reassure the Romans that the visitors from Camp Half-Blood are coming in peace. And that's only one of her worries. In her pocket, Annabeth carries a gift from her mother that came with an unnerving command: Follow the Mark of Athena. Avenge me. Annabeth already feels weighed down by the prophecy that will send seven demigods on a quest to find—and close—the Doors of Death. What more does Athe

Ruled by the silent, mysterious God King, the pantheon is nourished of Breath, the life force that keeps them alive and youthful.  Exiled in Idris, the former royal family reluctantly betrothed a princess to the God King. Arriving in T'Telir, she finds both the city ad the marriage are not at all what she expected. Her only ally is Lightsong, a god who is skeptical of his own divinity, who fears that war with Idris is inevitable.  Meanwhile, another new arrival in T'Telir, one who bears the sentient sword Nightblood, makes cunning plans based on the unique magic of Hallandren, which uses color to focus the power of Breath- plans that could change the world.  Thoughts: Characters: 9.5 Most characters are very

Flatland

Image
Author: Edwin A. Abbott Genre: Classics Original publication date: 1884 Book description: This masterpiece of science (and mathematical) fiction is a delightfully unique and highly entertaining satire that has charmed readers for more than 100 years. The work of English clergyman, educator and Shakespearean scholar Edwin A. Abbott, it describes the journeys of A. Square, a mathematician and resident of the two-dimensional Flatland, where women-thin, straight lines- are the lowliest of shapes and where men may have any number of sides, depending on their social status.  Through strange occurrences that bring him into contact with host of geometric forms, Square has adventures in Spaceland (three dimensions), Lineland (one dimension), and Pointland (no dimensions), and ultimately entertains thoughts of visiting a land of four dimensions - a revolutionary idea for which he is returned to his two dimensional world.  Thoughts: Characters: 3.0 There is very little "personality

The Martian

Author: Andy Weir  Genre: Sci-Fi Book description:  Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars. Now, he’s sure he’ll be the first person to die there. After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he’s alive—and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive. Chances are, though, he won’t have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment, or plain-old “human error” are much more likely to kill him first. Thoughts: Characters: 10.0 For pure realism, charismatic. You don't only love and cheer for Mark who is the only person we get close to for the majority of the book, you still come to care about the other crew members and the main people in NASA while they try to live through their situation.  Plot:9.0 Logic: 9.0 Actually I have not

July #AYearAthon / Frist week reads

Image
The first week of July was less productive than what I expected. I had one reread this week: *The raven boys by Maggie Stiefvater this is the second time I am reading this book this year. I have been in a kind of reading slump where I am not really feeling like reading at all. So I picked one of my favorites. I love the characters, the friendships, the ships that happen in this story and better yet with a new series coming up I wanted to reread the series before I jump to the new series.  *Antartida el aterrador fin del mundo (Antaride the scary end of the world) by Charles B. O'Daniel short story written by a Spanish author quite a while back. The idea is very good yet the story is not as captivating as it should. It tells the story of a couple who are not in the best situation who are tired of the government's take on global climate change and they decide to go to the ends of Earth to investigate. It has a surprising ending in the way I did not see coming but still too

Mid Year Book Freak Out Book Tag

I am not sure who is the creator of this sorry about that. So moving on, there are several prompts so I will try to leave only a single answer for each one. 1. Best book you've read so far this year? The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch This was totally a booktube recommendation, initially it took me a while to get into but then I was super invested and in the end, I loved it! 2. Best sequel you've read so far? Based on the enjoyment I would say The Blinding knife and the broken eye by Brent Weeks, a slow-paced story but you really get to care about the characters that get to know them even if the plot is slow moving it continues to be interesting.  3. New release you haven't read yet? This one is easy I haven't read any jajajaja so I have a big list to pick from.  Top ones: The burning white by Brent Weeks. I started to read this series because of recommendation by several booktubers but overall it was a nice story, the characters just get you so invest

June Wrap Up

Image
This was a difficult month, I had to move to a new city so I was busy house hunting, packing took forever, then setting up in a new place and the super busy time at work... Well, I completely lost interest in reading.  My life, in general, had a setback/slowing down. But oh well we did not do too bad really.  So in total, I read 9 books  2 more we DNFs not exactly by choice but I started reading them from Scribd then I canceled the subscription and forgot to finish them first so, yeah I was not able to find them on time to finish. I will try to find them and continue. My reading challenge ends up in 119 which means I am officially only 20 books ahead of schedule so I do not feel too bad about slowing down this month.  This is the month I have read the least. Not nice either that most of the books I did not have too strong feelings about and no reviews for them were made, but too much time passed so, not going to upload reviews for the time being, so sorry about that.  T
