Flatland
Author: Edwin A. Abbott
Genre: Classics
Original publication date: 1884
Book description: This masterpiece of science (and mathematical) fiction is a delightfully unique and highly entertaining satire that has charmed readers for more than 100 years. The work of English clergyman, educator and Shakespearean scholar Edwin A. Abbott, it describes the journeys of A. Square, a mathematician and resident of the two-dimensional Flatland, where women-thin, straight lines- are the lowliest of shapes and where men may have any number of sides, depending on their social status.
Through strange occurrences that bring him into contact with host of geometric forms, Square has adventures in Spaceland (three dimensions), Lineland (one dimension), and Pointland (no dimensions), and ultimately entertains thoughts of visiting a land of four dimensions - a revolutionary idea for which he is returned to his two dimensional world.
Thoughts:
Characters: 3.0
There is very little "personality" and development in the characters. There is very little focus on them as people and more of the society in which they live. Square is a very peculiar man who has very little love for anything or anyone even his own family.
Logic: 5.0
It sort of makes sense the way Square explains their society. I have a very strong dislike for the way social classes are to be differentiated and the way woman are seen. Oh well I had a lot of struggles with that.
Plot: 5.0
There was really no plot from my P.O.V. it was more of a way to explain the dimensions. It was very uninteresting, just getting explained how everyone looked and behaved so, really nothing was happening at all.
Writing Style: 6.0
It was very dry and even if the idea was an interesting one, just like many classics it feels very dense or hard to read. It did take me a very long time to get through even if the society, in theory, sounded like something interesting. I always enjoy learning about new worlds this time it felt a bit too much effort.
Intrigue: 4.0
No intrigue, as I said there was really not much happening.
Enjoyment: 5.0
I did not enjoy it as much as I expected, but after finishing the whole thing I feel it interests me, the society it presented if not the way it was displayed.
Intention: 8.0
It was a revolutionary idea for the time it was written and it tries to wake wonder and analysis of society's lifestyle, I feel that it does manage to convey it wonderfully.
Total score: 36
Average: 5.1
Star rating: 2 stars
