Fragments of the lost
Author: Megan Miranda
Genre: YA Mystery
Original publication date: November 2017
Book description: Jessa Whitworth knew she didn't belong in her ex-boyfriend Caleb's room. But she couldn't deny that she was everywhere: in his photos, his neatly folded T-shirts, even the butterfly necklace in his jeans pocket . . . the one she gave him for safekeeping on that day.
His mother asked her to pack up his things, even though she blames Jessa for his accident. How could she say no? And maybe, just maybe, it will help her work through the guilt she feels about their final moments together.
But as Jessa begins to box up the pieces of Caleb's life, they trigger memories that make Jessa realize their past relationship may not be exactly as she remembered. And she starts to question whether she really knew Caleb at all.
Each fragment of his life reveals a new clue that propels Jessa to search for the truth about Caleb's accident. What really happened on the storm-swept bridge?
Thoughts:
This is the pick for literally book dead club and I really knew nothing about it, I read the description until I was trying to write the review for this.
It begins with a very typical plotline, a horrible accident, a death, no resolution, and the guilt of the blameless.
Jessa broke up with her boyfriend of one year, Caleb. A rainy day after a met of hers, Caleb goes missing, a part of a bridge is missing, parts of his car start to wash up in the bank of the river, the body is not recovered.
Jessa is very depressed, she isolates herself from her family, her friends, and classmates. Imagine Bella in New Moon from Twilight series, so yes I found that very annoying and stressful. But that is a good sign, it makes you feel for her.
Jessa is approached by Caleb's mother to pack things up in his room as the remaining of her family is moving away. Jessa is the POV we follow and it seems like she feels everyone blames her, there are rumors, again high school and small-town vibe, everyone wants to have a say in tragedies. If there is something that inspires people to share is rumors and theories of what happened right before a bad luck strike.
We have Jessa remembering her relationship, she finds things that don't add up though. With time she starts to find actions not to her liking, the way Caleb behaved towards her. As you see the relationship described in snips, and from her side, as she feels angry that everyone is blaming her, you start to see issues, it is not simply that he was a bad person but they were very immature and still had a lot of getting to know each other. The lack of communication played a huge part in the crumbling of their relationship.
I did not love the love issues, we have jealousy, misunderstandings. As she is uncovering more things that Caleb hid from her and his behavior towards the end of their relationship, I started to dislike him. But you get so invested in this, something is off, and you just need to continue and find out what happened.
The reveal, in the end, was not what I had predicted. I was very surprised, it made Caleb be a little more likable.
Once more I find that the endings are too convenient but my experience while reading it was a very good one.
