Well of ascension
Author: Brandon Sanderson
Series: Mistborn #2
Genre: Fantasy
Original publication date:
Book description: They did the impossible, deposing the godlike being whose brutal rule had lasted a thousand years. Now Vin, the street urchin who has grown into the most powerful Mistborn in the land, and Elend Venture, the idealistic young nobleman who loves her, must build a healthy new society in the ashes of an empire.
They have barely begun when three separate armies attack. As the siege tightens, an ancient legend seems to offer a glimmer of hope. But even if it really exists, no one knows where to find the Well of Ascension or what manner of power it bestows.
It may just be that killing the Lord Ruler was the easy part. Surviving the aftermath of his fall is going to be the real challenge.
Thoughts:
Once more to start off I had a bit of difficulty getting into the story, not because it was not entertaining and I was enjoying my time, but I had issues with the behavior Vin and Elend had.
Vin and Elen are trying to get used to their new position in society when both have been very insecure, their deity and royal ascent does not make it any easy for them. Vin continues to be very insecure, just like any teenager, no matter how powerful you might be, she is still a young woman who feels unfit and fear to be abandoned by her beloved. She is scared to accept that she loves Elend, she wants to protect herself from the heartbreak she sees as inevitable.
Elend like any young man sees himself as not good enough for a woman who is more capable than him in combat. The new king is very unsure about his ability to lead, the fact that his girlfriend is in charge of protecting him and his kingdom affects his pride and sense of self-worth.
We see lots of changes in people, they all seem reasonable, they fought a war they thought unwinnable and won but they had huge losses and keep a government running is much harder than destroying it. People to support and guide, teach those who were oppressed to prosper, teach the privileged class that their ways were wrong and inhumane, presents the bigger issue.
Clubs Ham, Spook, everyone changes some for better and some for worse as the actions during the fight, the loss of friends, the change in their status affects them. Everyone now is working towards helping Elend, the new King, instead of trying to make the downfall happen. The 180° change is troubling. Even Sazed, the good Terrisman is uncertain.
A great deal is the characters, their growth, their struggle, the interaction among one another, and the situation they are facing, 3 armies coming to overpower their newborn government.
The plot again is very slow.
We have new Characters come in, Zane being the most prominent as Vin is his main focus.
The voice he hears, the voice Vin always assigned to her brother, it seems to be something, but I am still not 100% sure.
Zane always seemed fishy, his intentions not clear but Vin trusted him quickly, he seemed to help her and yet not. The only reason I disliked him was that he kept trying to get close to Vin, he wanted her to be romantically attracted to him, always making her feel isolated from the rest of the people in Luthadel as they were not Mistborn, it was very annoying to see Vin played, he knew how insecure she was and his words just made the whole situation worse.
This book had a lot going on:
*Romantic relationships, issues of lack of communication, distrust.
*Unexplainable love interests.
*Fear of spies among them, betrayal from their own people. The lack of faith and then doubt, the hurt to want to no distrust their own, that was a wonderful struggle to see.
*Elend's growth as a person, as a King, accepting his responsibility but more than that living to protect and serve the people. He finally convinced me of his devotion.
*Vin also had a huge personal evolution, she had to accept her feelings, her differences with others, her struggles about being feminine, and also a strong warrior.
I feel I can't say much without spoiling something and yet, so many things that make it hard to place everything in a cohesive way. I was immersed in the story, I could not stop reading, the research about the old religions, the belief of the mist, the danger that might actually be returning to it, the call, the something Vin simply could not stop hearing, the power that no other Mistborn or Allomancer presented.
Vin and Sazed started to believe she was the hero so long ago foretold.
The plot moves slowly, we have a few revelations regarding Allomancy, the Hero of Ages, the Terris religion, the Deepness. We have a lot of things happening and not many things get resolved, this puts you on a high spirit to pick up the following book right away.
This book was picked up hesitantly as it is big and it has to be read for the Cosmearalong, besides Mistborn was included in my 2020 Series to complete. The great thing about me is that once I "decide" to do something I love to cross things out from lists but the pressure of having to do it, makes me lose most of the inspiration to do it!
But I am so glad that I picked it up. I really loved my time reading this one. It is easy to understand why many people who love fantasy have this series among their favorites. As of right now, I think this is a very good option to be on my favorite books of 2020
