Home before dark

Image
Author: Riley Sager  Genre: Mystery/Thriller, Paranormal Original publication date: June 30, 2020  Book description:  What was it like? Living in that house. Maggie Holt is used to such questions. Twenty-five years ago, she and her parents, Ewan and Jess, moved into Baneberry Hall, a rambling Victorian estate in the Vermont woods. They spent three weeks there before fleeing in the dead of night, an ordeal Ewan later recounted in a nonfiction book called House of Horrors. His tale of ghostly happenings and encounters with malevolent spirits became a worldwide phenomenon, rivaling The Amityville Horror in popularity—and skepticism. Today, Maggie is a restorer of old homes and too young to remember any of the events mentioned in her father’s book. But she also doesn’t believe a word of it. Ghosts, after all, don’t exist. When Maggie inherits Baneberry Hall after her father’s death, she returns to renovate the place to prepare it for sale. But her homecoming is anything but warm. Peopl

Thoughts: This is alsmot halfway through the series so I am not able to discuss this without heavy spoilers. Hope if you do have interest in this series you have already read it. But the spoiler free section is not going to the very long, I will give slight spoilers and try to comment about the direction the plot is going.  I am a bit behind because there is an anime already, so maybe people know the story and this is not new, for me I am experiencing the story for the first

Mangas: Sakura CardCaptor vol 1-5

Image
Author: CLAMP Genre: Fantasy, Manga Original publication date: 1996 to 1998 Book description: This follows Sakura a ten-year-old who lives a very normal life with her father and big brother. One day she wakes up a magic book and releases he Clow cards and she is tasked with capturing them once more before world destruction.  Thoughts: We get introduced to Sakura and her family, friends and classmates. I have experienced this story in the anime form when I was younger.  I had forgotten many things and worse off I had missed a lot of the relationships included here. -We have several things added here for diversity or shock factor that I was surprised when I started reading this story. Before we get into the story I'll include things I missed as a child that surprised me this time around. -Adult child romantic relationship hints, we have in several examples of different scandal factor. An elementary student-professor, a middle school student-professor assistant, high school student-

I didn't kill her

Image
Author: Fernando Trujillo Sanz  Genre: Mystery/Thriller short story Original publication date: December 31, 2014 Description: Unnnecesary just by looking at the tile we know a murder was committed and someone is charged for it, they claim to be innocent. Thoughts: First off I find it hilarious that I have been doing reviews for books or stories in Spanish, those books that might not have a translation and you don't know when they will be translated to English. Usually, I did a review in Spanish even if the books were in English and its common to include if there is a current translation or if maybe one is coming along later, but this case is the revere which I find very ironic.  Coming back to our topic at hand, I really enjoyed my time with this story.  A lawyer is the main focus of this, he goes to the culprit, and their banter makes you smile and laugh all the way. The accused is very cynical and sure of himself. The lawyer does not like him very much but is trying really har

Contratiempo

Author: Jorge Alberto Perez  Genre: Short story collection Original publication date: September 30, 2018 Book description (from Good Reads): it plays with the multiple facets of memories, fast forwarding and slowing down the clock in them altering them in a very unique way.  Thouhts: We see him explore several nonconventional storytelling. It is very refreshing and even if each story has a different style, they don't feel jarring. Also, it weaves in music some of the pieces are original work and you can find the lyrics and music score as well. It adds to each story where its included.  There are quiet a bit of stories here but again short stories it not good to say too much otherwise its spoiled, so I'll describe them very briefly. *The first tale is Nacimos el mismo dia or we were born the same day. It is the story about two young people but the timeline is very changing they are bron six years apart, yet they meet during their young years both at the same age, when they met

The Reptile Room

Image
Series: Series of unfortunate events #2 Author: Lemony Snicket Original publication date: September 30, 1999 Book description:   Dear Reader, If you have picked up this book with the hope of finding a simple and cheery tale, I'm afraid you have picked up the wrong book altogether. The story may seem cheery at first, when the Baudelaire children spend time in the company of some interesting reptiles and a giddy uncle, but don't be fooled. If you know anything at all about the unlucky Baudelaire children, you already know that even pleasant events lead down the same road to misery. In fact, within the pages you now hold in your hands, the three siblings endure a car accident, a terrible odor, a deadly serpent, a long knife, a large brass reading lamp, and the appearance of a person they'd hoped never to see again. I am bound to record these tragic events, but you are free to put this book back on the shelf and seek something lighter. With all due respect, Lemony Snicket T

Cujo

Image
Author : Stephen King  Genre : Suspense, Fiction Original publication date: September 8, 1981 Book description:   Outside a peaceful town in central Maine, a monster is waiting. Cujo is a two-hundred-pound Saint Bernard, the best friend Brett Camber has ever had. One day Cujo chases a rabbit into a bolt-hole—a cave inhabited by sick bats. What happens to Cujo, how he becomes a horrifying vortex inexorably drawing in all the people around him Thoughts: Key words: Violence against dogs, blood, body horror, bad representation of women, flawed characters, mention of rape (only as a threat against a woman). This story was very interesting. It starts off very slow, giving you details about the family. We go into a bit of the life of the Cambers, they lead a very unremarkable life, a couple who has their issues, a son who aspires to be just like his father when he grows up and a very good dog as a pet. We follow several people as they go about their life, giving us a few different perspecti

Danse Macabre- DNFed

Image
Author: Stephen King Genre: NonFiction Original Publication date: 1981 Book description(I read this only after DNFing the book):   From the author of dozens of #1 New York Times bestsellers and the creator of many unforgettable movies comes a vivid, intelligent, and nostalgic journey through three decades of horror as experienced through the eyes of the most popular writer in the genre. In 1981, years before he sat down to tackle On Writing, Stephen King decided to address the topic of what makes horror horrifying and what makes terror terrifying. Here, in ten brilliantly written chapters, King delivers one colorful observation after another about the great stories, books, and films that comprise the horror genre—from Frankenstein and Dracula to The Exorcist, The Twilight Zone, and Earth vs. The Flying Saucers. Thoughts: This is an interesting book, but you need to understand that a lot of references are very particular and for the most part I was unfamiliar with what it was referenc

Walking dead Catch up vol 12-16

Image
Author: Robert Kirkman Illustrator:  Charlie Adlard Publication dates: 2010 to 2012 (to the lastest volume discussed in this review) General book description: (Me rambling mostly) The walking dead is a story about what comes after a zombie apocalypse, the people who survive know how to stay alive for the most part. They fight the zombies as best they can but now they need to do something more, surviving is not easy and not only because of the dead. They are starving, they are getting sick, the new goal is to find a place to make their sanctuary and try to work on creating a sustainable system for surviving. Thoughts: I stopped reviewing this series because its long and if you want to talk about generalities you can only do so much, so now I grouped a lot of the volumes and will make semi spoiler discussions of them. Vol 12 Life Among them: Rick and the rest of the group get invited to Alexandria and when they arrive everything is so different from what they are used to. People living

Manga started: Inuyasha

Image
I started in a kick to read manga form animes I was watching growing up. It is a trend right now to go back to your childhood favorites, it also helps that I really did not get through the manga, so its a first time read as well in that regard. I barely remember anything from the series so it's going to be simply discussing the manga and not comparing to the anime. I do not think I will be able to remember well enough to compare. The discussions will contain mild spoilers as its a series and what will I do if I can't talk about what I am seeing in each one? Inuyasha volemes 1-4 Author Rumiko Takahashi Translator: is not mentioned anywhere, Panina really has a big improvement room. Oiriginal publication date: 1997 It kicks off with Kagome as she is living her everyday normal life. She lives in a Temple with her family which consists of a mother, little brother and a grandparent. The grandfather (hisname is not mentioned so far), is very keen on sharing culture, past traditions

I should stop saying I'm am going to stop buying so many books. It just never works out that way. I have bought books for the first time from eBay and I went crazy. I will not say too much about the books as most of them are mystery/thrillers and I like to go into those blind. Also, I am not sure what they are about, I picked done of those mystery boxes that include 20 books picked by the seller. I will probably never do it again but it was a fun surprise to see books I had never heard about arriving at my door. *The chase by Brenda Joyce A romantic suspense thriller. We follow Claire as she tries to find out who killed her husband, and of course, there is a man who comes to the rescue to help her get to the bottom of the mystery. *Unlucky by Jana DeLeon We have Mallory, she is very unlucky in everything in her life.
