Anya's Ghost
Author: Vera Brosgol
Pages: 224
First Published: June 2011
Genre: Graphic Novel YA
Book Description (from Good Reads): Anya could really use a friend. But her new BFF isn't kidding about the "Forever" part.
Of all the things Anya expected to find at the bottom of an old well, a new friend was not one of them. Especially not a new friend who’s been dead for a century.
Falling down a well is bad enough, but Anya's normal life might actually be worse. She's embarrassed by her family, self-conscious about her body, and she's pretty much given up on fitting in at school. A new friend—even a ghost—is just what she needs.
First impression:
I expected this to be a children's book with a little girl having been killed or died then became a ghost or maybe a little girl who becomes friends with a ghost. Very much like the relationship in City of Ghosts between Cassidy and Jacob. I was very wrong.
It was a YA book, Anya is not a little kid, she's a high school student with a few issues: She's too selfish and so self-centered that is annoying. She is a flawed MC, I like it but still, it annoyed me a bit but she is very realistic, a high school girl who is not feeling comfortable in her own skin.
The art was very good, I have not read many graphic novels but I liked the way it was drawn. Also, the story had a twist which I did not see coming. The ghost was not exactly friendly, as the description let you know. I obviously did not read the description. I simply took a look in the title and cover and then started reading.
Anya does get better, she learns to not be ashamed of her roots, not to treat like trash compatriots for fear of what others might think, she realizes that she's not exactly a good friend and hopefully will try to work on that. And to appreciate her family a little bit more, after a big scare I guess that makes sense.
I gave this 3.5 stars mainly because it felt like I was expecting something so different than what I got, again not the book's fault but oh well.
Used to accomplish challenges:
Tis the Season a thon. Read a short book (200-250)
#AYearathon. Read books under 300 pages
