Book Description (from Good Reads): Eve Wilson's face was once scarred by a vicious assault. Terrified and ashamed, she escaped to the online realm, where she could choose the face she allowed people to see. Years later, her outer scars faded and inner scars buried, Eve has fought her way back to the real world and is determined to help others do the same. Now a graduate student moonlighting as a bartender, Eve researches the addictive powers of online communities. When her test subjects begin turning up dead as a result of apparent suicides, she doesn't know where to turn.
Homicide detective Noah Webster is one of the few people who believe the victims are connected murders. Eve becomes Noah's online guide and realizes that the handsome detective may have secret scars as painful as her own. As Eve and Noah chase a killer who is always one step ahead of them, together they try to overcome the tragedies of their pasts and learn to trust again, but they soon discover that danger is much closer than they think.
Opinions:
Very mixed feelings here.
Most characters are ok, Eve and Noah I have huge issues with respecting their decision making, they do not seem very realistic or believable.
Noah behaves irrationally, making lapses in judgment along with his partner Jake regarding woman simply due to lust because that's what it looks like. The men here present very possessive feelings towards women and picture them only as pleasing to the eye or describe them instantly wanting, lusting over them.
The "romance" is by far my least favorite ever so far.
The storyline for the crimes, the murders reasoning, the outsmarting the law, the way it was all thought out and almost executed to perfection was incredible. I loved it. Unfortunately, the "romance" was all over the place which affected greatly on the enjoyment of the book as a whole.
Also Eve's past is so full of bad luck, it's like yeah this bad thing happened to her, then this other bad thing, then this is the sucky thing she's going through at the moment oh wait she can totally forget it all magically because she so wants this guy, she needs his body, she has lust pouring out of her when she has not had a conversation with him in a year, but oh he.... he is the exception she wants his so bad that everyone notices.
Then we have Jake that is a very irresponsible person as a detective, but oh he is a very good detective, it really does not matter that he is very late or that he goes through many women... No Noah still likes his partner even if he spends 3/4 of the time complaining about him. They are not a very good team yet it works, my complaint with them is again the issues where they fight over the one woman, argh seriously? Women are not trophies and you can't be like, I was making my move on her you got in my way, I hate you because she is talking to you. He is so shallow in these parts. It's hard to believe a Woman actually wrote this.
In some parts is ridiculous how can someone behave the way they do, an experienced detective is more concerned on making out with the girl than stopping a serial killer who could be armed, yes excellent idea, go to the girl and turn your back on the bad guy. I understand that feelings can be hard to reign in but the detectives here show not all that much professionalism, they let emotions get in the way and their actions, (it is fiction really but oh well) could have had huge negative effects on the case as a whole. You cannot allow someone with such a biased judgment on a case, work on it! So why do you have to go ahead and tell him information so he can go ahead and act on his own against orders?
Argh it was too convenient too, but he did save the girl, even if the odds were against them and in the end no negative consequences to anyone even if they did break protocol and behaved hugely unethical on their professions. Again, not very realistic is more like a super convenient happy ending for all, all things considered.
But leaving that aside, the part of the criminal, the way he planned and had them chasing fake leads, the way the agenda of two bad guys crossed, the petty vengeance along with the super methodical serial killer. That was great, just wished that it was more based on that than on the "Romance".
I gave this book a 2 star.
I can't recommend it because I really had issues with it. But if you like romance, hugely with insta-love and based purely in physical attraction, well sure go ahead, the crime mystery is great!
