The Greatest Gift: A Christmas Tale
Author: Phillip Van Doren Stern
Pages: 64
Genre: Magical Realism
Book Description (from Good Reads): A man named George Pratt who ponders suicide until he receives an opportunity to see what the world would be like without him, Stern ultimately published the story in a small pamphlet and sent it out as his 1943 Christmas card. One of those 200 cards found its way into the hands of Frank Capra, who shared it with Jimmy Stewart, and the film that resulted became the holiday tradition we cherish today.
The story I guess pretty much everyone knows more about the movie. It was really short, it was all in cards, obviously, it is short the first part of the audiobook was only the normal story then it was followed by the daughter of the author telling us the story of how it all came to be (the story was written and then failed to be published) and the result of the cards being sent out.
The story is very touching, it is something most people feel at some point especially once they reach an age where you know that there are really little more surprises to come your way. Feeling down is unfortunately very common nowadays (and it has been the curse of humankind from the beginning of time surely) and instead of focusing on the good things you have, no you ignore it and exploit the regrets of past actions and decisions. But seeing it the way the character gets the most eye-opening situation. It was an excellent story, very short but it was straight to the point.
The Intention is to help people appreciate what they have and value their life, it is the greatest gift you can have.
I gave it 4.5 stars.
