October Reading Wrap up

Image
This month I participated on several readathons and I did manage to complete them pretty much all, this is actually a new for me, the last couple of months I have not managed to accomplish the challenges with the time limit. It feels nice. I almost completed all my TBR, I did not read a book of the originals I had added to my TBR. I did read more than the books included, I swapped one of them for a few others so it feels nice. Readathons that I accomplished and actually completed: #AYearAThon Hocus Pocus Readathon Spookathon Supernatural Read a thon Supernatural a thon Bookeyman A Thon Books read 24 2019 challenge: 183 Had to read more books than the amount I bought. Total books bought: 13 Below only reading stats that I like to keep track of.

Frankisstein: A love story

Image
Author: Jeanette Winterson  Genre: Sci-Fi, LGBT, Original publication date: May 2019 Book Description (from Goodreads):  In Brexit Britain, a young transgender doctor called Ry is falling in love – against their better judgement – with Victor Stein, a celebrated professor leading the public debate around AI. Meanwhile, Ron Lord, just divorced and living with Mum again, is set to make his fortune launching a new generation of sex dolls for lonely men everywhere. Across the Atlantic, in Phoenix, Arizona, a cryogenics facility houses dozens of bodies of men and women who are medically and legally dead… but waiting to return to life. But the scene is set in 1816, when nineteen-year-old Mary Shelley writes a story about creating a non-biological life-form. ‘Beware, for I am fearless and therefore powerful.' What will happen when homo sapiens is no longer the smartest being on the planet? Jeanette Winterson shows us how much closer we are to that future than we realize. Funny and f

Suicide Forest

Image
Author: Jeremy Bates Series: World's scariest places #1 Genre: Thriller Original publication date: December 2014 Book Description (from Good Reads): Just outside of Tokyo lies Aokigahara, a vast forest and one of the most beautiful wilderness areas in Japan...and also the most infamous spot to commit suicide in the world. Legend has it that the spirits of those many suicides are still roaming, haunting deep in the ancient woods. When bad weather prevents a group of friends from climbing neighboring Mt. Fuji, they decide to spend the night camping in Aokigahara. But they get more than they bargained for when one of them is found hanged in the morning--and they realize there might be some truth to the legends after all. Thoughts: It is definitely a slow start.  Initially when you are still getting to know the people the relationship issues the main couple has is very annoying. There is insecurity, jealousy, and manipulation, nothing too extreme but then again I was still n

Mangas

Title: Blue Exorcist Vol. 3  Author: Kazue Kato Original publication date: March 2010 Genre: Manga Book Description (from Good Reads):  As a new Exorcist Esquire at True Cross Academy, Rin Okumura has a long way to go before he reaches the top rank of Paladin. When Rin and his classmates are sent to search for a ghost, Amaimon, King of Earth, takes Rin by surprise and steals the Koma Sword. Higher powers have been observing events at the academy and make their presence known. New players enter the game, and Rin doesn't even know he's playing! Thoughts: The building of friendship  of the people here is slowly growing and it gives it a good vibe. Though the enemies, are still something hard to pin point their goal, I assume it will be revealed a bit later. The drawing style is still enjoyable and the story is fun. It is a bit slow because we don't see much progress on the overall objective of Vengeance. It makes sense because the main character is in school and le

The Excorsist

Image
Author: William Peter Blatty  Genre: Horror Original Publication date: June 1971 Book Description (from Good Reads ): Inspired by a true story of a child’s demonic possession in the 1940s, William Peter Blatty created an iconic novel that focuses on Regan, the eleven-year-old daughter of a movie actress residing in Washington, D.C. A small group of overwhelmed yet determined individuals must rescue Regan from her unspeakable fate, and the drama that ensues is gripping and unfailingly terrifying. Thoughts: Not sure if this was based on a true story or not, I read the book before I read the description. But it did feel very realistic. The life of a woman trying to make her way through an artistic career, having issues with an absent ex-husband and juggling her career, raising her daughter and her social life. But then when her daughter starts to show a decline and issues, she leaves it all to pursue any medical assistance mone can buy.  It takes a long time for the most obviou

Jackson ,  Natasha Trethewey , Daniel José Older , Edwidge Danticat  , Rachel Kaadzi Ghansah , Wendy S. Walters , Isabel Wilkerson  , Honorée Fanonne Jeffers , Carol Anderson , Kevin Young , Kiese Laymon , Clint Smith Genre: Non-Fiction Original publication date: August 2016 Book description : A collection of essays and poems about race from the most important voices of her generation and our time. Thoughts: This is hard to rate. This is very similar to a collection of short stories, you can't connect to all of them the same way. Some of the essays were emotive and touching, most mentioned situations I was not familiar with, not being from the country and having almost no interaction with social media like Twitter I missed most events. But still seeing there have been so many, so often, and worse still there surely has been plenty more that h

Choosing Monthly TBR

Image
So I want to change the way TBR is chosen. We will leave it a bit more to chance and it will be more like a lottery game. Let's explain it a bit. I will have 4 different Jars. Jar #1 will contain little paper slips with numbers going from 5 to 13. This will represent the number of prompt draws. Jar #2 will contain the reading prompts / mini-challenges for me. Each prompt will have to be paired with a book, no doubling up allowed. So depending on the draws that will be the minimal number of books that will have to be read that month. Prompts included: Recent buy second chance sister's pick unfinished last month Carry on from the previous tbr ya fantasy adult fantasy poetry classic Spanish author Mexican author Latin American author author of color non-fiction over 500 pages manga/comic/graphic novel ya contempor

Blue Lily Lily Blue

Image
Author: Maggie Stiefvater Series: The Raven Cycle #3 Genre: Magical Realism Original publication date: October 2014 Book Description: There is danger in dreaming. But there is even more danger in waking up. Blue Sargent has found things. For the first time in her life, she has friends she can trust, a group to which she can belong. The raven boys have taken her in as one of their own. Their problems have become hers, and her problems have become theirs. The trick with found things, though, is how easily they can be lost. Friends can betray. Mothers can disappear. Visions can mislead. Certainties can unravel.  Thoughts: This is a reread of the book. I had forgotten which parts happen in this one and what happens in the next one. But still liked it a lot. The family issues with Adam is managed very well. Not everything is always handled the best but that does not mean a defeat for the sufferer and it has to be done, winning or achieving a conviction is not the main intent.  T

A Dirty Job

Image
Author: Christopher Moore Series: Grim Reaper #1 Genre: Fantasy, Paranormal Original Publication date: March 2016 Book Description (from Good Reads):  Charlie Asher is a pretty normal guy with a normal life, married to a bright and pretty woman who actually loves him for his normalcy. They're even about to have their first child. Yes, Charlie's doing okay—until people start dropping dead around him, and everywhere he goes a dark presence whispers to him from under the streets. Charlie Asher, it seems, has been recruited for a new position: as Death. It's a dirty job, but hey! Somebody's got to do it. Thoughts: Mixed feelings. It has a very interesting premise. The fact that Death is a job people get through situations that almost feel aleatory. People do not reap souls, they go and collect them after the person has died, Death merchants do not arrange the demise of the person they simply take care of the souls.  There are mentions of old enemies, of the balan

Fast Food Genocide

Image
Full title: Fast Food Genocide how processed food is killing us and what we can do about it Authors: Robert Phillips and Joel Fuhrman Genre: Non-fiction, Health Original publication date: October 2017 Book Description (from Good Reads):  Fast food is far more than just the burgers, fries, and burritos served at chain restaurants; it is also the toxic, human-engineered products found in every grocery store across America. These include cold breakfast cereals; commercial and preserved (deli) meats and cheeses; sandwich breads and buns; chips, pretzels, and crackers; fried foods; energy bars; and soft drinks. Fast foods have become the primary source of calories in the United States and consequently the most far-reaching and destructive influence on our population. The indisputable truth is that our highly processed diet is the source of a national health crisis that is exploding into a genocide with unseen tragic implications. Heart attacks, strokes, cancer, obesity, ADHD, autism,

The ultimate gift

Image
Author: Jim Stovall Genre: Fiction Original publication date:  Book Description (from Good Reads):  What would you do to inherit a million dollars? Would you be willing to change your life? Jason Stevens is about to find out in Jim Stovall's The Ultimate Gift. Red Stevens has died, and the older members of his family receive their millions with greedy anticipation. But a different fate awaits young Jason, whom Stevens, his great-uncle, believes may be the last vestige of hope in the family. Thoughts: This is an interesting book. I feel that the message is great yet it did not feel as heartwarming as I expected. I really liked the way Jason had to learn his lessons but the way it was related made it feel very disconnected. Jason is facing the trail and he has a month to prove he learned his lesson, as the trial progresses the video presenting his gift is shown then the court gets to "hear" what he learned and how he spent 30 days sharing his knowledge with othe
