Practical Magic
Author: Alice Hoffman
Genre: Fantasy, Paranormal, Magical Realism
Original Publication date: June 1995
Book Description (from Good Reads): When the beautiful and precocious sisters Sally and Gillian Owens are orphaned at a young age, they are taken to a small Massachusetts town to be raised by their eccentric aunts, who happen to dwell in the darkest, eeriest house in town. As they become more aware of their aunts' mysterious and sometimes frightening powers -- and as their own powers begin to surface -- the sisters grow determined to escape their strange upbringing by blending into "normal" society.
But both find that they cannot elude their magic-filled past. And when trouble strikes -- in the form of a menacing backyard ghost -- the sisters must not only reunite three generations of Owens women but embrace their magic as a gift -- and their key to a future of love and passion.
Thoughts:
The characters were interesting but not wholly to my liking. The aunts did not have many appearances as I expected, then Sally and Gillian were a good set of sisters for a while but then as they grew up their behavior seemed to clash with one another.
They did not behave like they had any magic for most of the story running away from their abilities and the only family that had taken care of them since childhood and who could help them understand their powers. I personally always dislike when the main characters do not like to accept what they are and in doing so end up making more mistakes and create unnecessary drama.
There was a lot of drama, the love stories here were meh. I did not like them much and there were a lot of them be it from Sally and Gillian, Anothonia and her sister or from other people.
They had to be included to inform us of the bad luck but really, they all felt rushed and not thought out thoroughly.
The plot was a bit meandering, but it was more focused on the family aspect, be it between sisters, pseudoparents to daughters, mother-daughters. That aspect was enjoyable, they all were so different but family ties won over everything.
I did like that there were some aspects of magic even if they were not as pronounced as I had expected them to be.
I gave this initially 4 stars, but then as a bit more time passed I realized that while it had been very enjoyable there were several details I wish it had done differently.
I guess I will lower it to 3.5.
Not bad really, enjoyed my time reading it.
I used this book for the challenges:
*Bookeyman A Thon This is my group book for Team Coven obviously.
*Supernatural a thon Rowena. Read a book featuring witches.
