The epic crush of Genie Lo
Author: F.C. Yee
Series: The epic crush of Genie Lo #1
Genre: Fantasy, mythology
Original publication date:
Book Description (from Good Reads): Genie Lo is one among droves of Ivy-hopeful overachievers in her sleepy Bay Area suburb. You know, the type who wins. When she’s not crushing it at volleyball or hitting the books, Genie is typically working on how to crack the elusive Harvard entry code.
But when her hometown comes under siege from hellspawn straight out of Chinese folklore, her priorities are dramatically rearranged. Enter Quentin Sun, a mysterious new kid in class who becomes Genie’s self-appointed guide to battling demons. While Genie knows Quentin only as an attractive transfer student with an oddly formal command of the English language, in another reality he is Sun Wukong, the mythological Monkey King incarnate—right down to the furry tale and penchant for peaches.
Suddenly, acing the SATs is the least of Genie’s worries. The fates of her friends, family, and the entire Bay Area all depend on her summoning an inner power that Quentin assures her is strong enough to level the very gates of Heaven. But every second Genie spends tapping into the secret of her true nature is a second in which the lives of her loved ones hang in the balance.
Thoughts:
IT is a interesting, not entirely sure I got the logic of the power Genie and company present but it was definitely interesting.
Genie is a very relatable, a young woman trying to excel in school, is being a very normal then the logical way she reacts to the whole thing falling on her head.
Love the dynamic Genie and the supernatural beings showing up in her life.
I really like it, it's a quick read and semi fast-paced.
It begins with a very high school setting but then it introduced mythological elements. Genie not being the damsel in distress is nice as well. Though at some points she was a bit annoying complaining about her very mundane life, friendship, the petty rivalry between her and other girls, feeling inferior etc but oh well she is still a teenager.
There is a "romance" aspect introduced and jealousy for no real reason and such that I really do not like too much but overall this was very enjoyable.
Just again, there are several scenes with too much luck there and can't say much, don't want to spoil anything. It does have some very predictable things thrown in there, can't deny it.
I gave this a 3.5 maybe round it up to 4.
I still need to read the second one to be able to get a more coherent opinion about the series as a whole.

*Supernatural-a-thon. Read a sassy sidekick.
