October 2020 Wrap up

Image
Another month has gone, it's really something to note. 2020 has been a ride. But it so close to the end as well. This month is special because we managed to complete the 2020 reading challenge set in Good Reads so that was a great boost for me. Seeing the challenge completed when I was feeling down gave me the positive boost I needed to get into a positive mentality. I am still riding that wave. Things are indeed falling into place towards the end of this year. I am happy with where my life is going lately. Nothing has changed really, just the way I see things has improved.  Moving on, I have here stats about my reading this month. As it can be very dull data to see I generally just place everything in an easy way to grasp (for me that means tables) and today's idea is to place information in graphs. We'll see if that works. This makes things look so good. It gives a boost regardless of how many books you complete that 107% makes me embarrassingly joyful. Ok, time to get

Manga : Blue Exorcist

Image
Volumes: 14 to 19  Author: Kazue Kato Original publication year: 2014-2017 Description: A group of high schoolers is training to be exorcists in the elite school The true cross. They go to high school but alongside their normal classes, they train, fight demons alongside their trained teachers, and gain experience and the knowledge necessary. The main characters are a set of twins who are the sons of Satan. One of them has inherited the blue flame, the power related to Satan himself. Rin is determined to become an exorcist and defeat Satan. He is not alone in this dream, he meets the rest of his class and they all have something to say about that dream of his.  Thoughts: As part of a long series, this will undoubtedly contain spoilers as you can't reference the events without giving away what happens in previous entries. Be warned. They manage to survive the trap by the Illuminati, Izumo's mom manages to pull the last of her strength and contain in her body the spirit of th

October book haul

Image
When was the last time I did a haul? It has been a while but I did say I was going to slow so I seem to finally be getting there. I  did get a few books lately, that I have not read for the most part. So lets begin.  Home before Dark by Riley Sager a paranormal mystery book. A young woman inherits a house where her family lived only two weeks when she was a child. Her family fled in the middle of the night and her father wrote a book about it claiming the house was haunted. She did not know her father still owned the property. The parents refuse to talk about the period they spent there. She does not believe in the paranormal and thinks her parents are lying but does not know why. After the passing of her father, she decides to go back to the house and discover the truth of what happened in the past. This was read as part of the Literally dead book club hosted by Kayla from Books and Lala. I already read and have the Review for this book in case you want more thoughts on it, you can

One by One

Image
Author: Ruth Ware Genre: Mystery Original publication date: September 8, 2020 Book description:  Getting snowed in at a beautiful, rustic mountain chalet doesn’t sound like the worst problem in the world, especially when there’s a breathtaking vista, a cozy fire, and company to keep you warm. But what happens when that company is eight of your coworkers…and you can’t trust any of them? When an off-site company retreat meant to promote mindfulness and collaboration goes utterly wrong when an avalanche hits, the corporate food chain becomes irrelevant and survival trumps togetherness. Come Monday morning, how many members short will the team be? Thoughts: This is a very Aghata Christie book. It is not only that I have been reading a lot of her books lately no, but this book also has the same vibe and style as her stories. There is a group of people, they're coworkers but they have more division and dislike towards each other than most companies. We follow each person but we only

DNF tag

Image
Who doesn't like book tags?  I recently found this tag and I think it's a very good idea so let's try it. I was not tagged by anyone but I mean in most videos people always say like "If you are not tagged and wish to try it out, consider yourself tagged and go for it." This was created by Nelle and Scott From Gunpower, fiction & plot you can find their original video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n-qnvwPZ120 1. Do you DNF?   I do DNF, but it's not too often. I am trying to give myself a bit more leeway on it but I have a hard time making up my mind to actually DNF. For a few years, I had a very hard time deciding my stance on DNF. It has been only a few months, maybe halfway through 2020 I finally decided I will be DNFing books. 2. If you DNF a book- does it count towards books read for the month? If I DNF a book, then I don't count it as read, sometimes if I am already too far into it I do get a bit annoyed because, by DNFing, it no longer co

Running man

Image
Author: Stephen King under pseudonym Richard Bachman  Genre: Sci-Fi, Dystopian Original publication date: May 1, 1982 Book description :  The poor are seen more by the government as worrisome rodents than actual human beings. The protagonist of The Running Man, Ben Richards, is quick to realize this as he watches his daughter, Cathy, grow more sick by the day and tread closer and closer to death. Desperate for money to pay Cathy’s medical bills, Ben enlists himself in a true reality style game show where the objective is to merely stay alive. Thoughts: It has a slow start while it is giving you a small introduction to the current state of the world.  The social division between those with money and those at the bottom of the economic status is abysmal. There are two types of currency, old dollars, and new currency. Those in very poor districts have only access to jobs where they get paid old dollars, which is less valuable than the new currency of course.  The environment suffered g

Tha walking dead update #2

Image
Author: Robert Kirkman Illustrators: Charlie Adlard and Cliff Rathburn Genre: Sci-fi, Horror Publication date: 2010-2014 Description: the world has come to an end as we know it. There is an infestation of zombie, if you get bitten or scratched you will die and become one of the undead. A few groups of people have survived that and now are trying to rebuild from there. Things are not as easy as they would have assumed. The main threat as they soon come to realize is not the walking dead but those who are yet not infected. Includes volumes 17 to 21. Thoughts: I have enjoyed reading this series. It is full of violence, death, betrayal, fighting for survival. It does not have to be very realistic, but in most cases, it carries a lot of logic. I generally read only 2 or 3 volumes a month but I'm sure the whole rest o the series can be finished in a single month. Each volume is a very quick read. I will next give a few details on what happens in volumes 17 to 21 the most recent volum

5 Day challenge last day

Image
I did leave the easiest one for last. But then I started reading the book and I realized this is one of those times where you know you get what the words mean but the greater meaning is not as easy to grasp. This last one had the lowest page count and yet it made you think so much, in the end, it was not as easy to get through it as I had expected. Really good merit to the book. A lot of the time that happens with some nonfiction books I need to reread them to get more out of them, that's what happened this time.  Anyhow the challenge itself was a great experience. I felt pressured but not overly so. It was just the necessary push to make myself get things done and with very reasonable goals. Once I started to get things done, the sense of accomplishment was enough to encourage me to keep going.  I will try something similar later on for sure! On we go, now to talk about the book itself. Title: The book of five rings Author: Miyamoto Musashi Genre: non-fiction Original publica

5 Day challenge day 4

Image
It has been a successful challenge. I am not going to say it's been easy but much better than if it was the 30-day long I have seen other people do.  I am happy with how it turned out to be. I was expecting to have more posts because I was going to update once a day as each ay was completed but it turned out to be even more due to technicalities I had not foreseen. That was a fun ride. And we're almost done. Moving on this was the next Agatha Christie book. Just for myself next time I reread her works I might just do it by series instead of publication order, that would be very fun. I have found I enjoy Miss Marple or Mr. Quin a lot more than Poirot even if his adventures are more fantastical.  Sidenote: Her works have been around for a while but still, why are the titles changed? I have found for most of her books there are several possible titles and I don't just mean the translations. In English, a single one of her books has at least 2 or 3 different titles, which mak

5 challenge day 3

Image
Okay day 3, it went a bit better. I did finish reading this until very late at night. It would have been much easier had a finished the Knight's shadow the day it was supposed to be.  Either way, I managed to get it done. Funny thing the most difficult thing was to catch up with the reviews posted. I decided not to publish them out of order. So I had to hurry to finish writing them.  Title: The thirteen problem Author: Agatha Christie Genre: Mystery/Thriller Original publication date: 1932 Book description:   The Tuesday Night Club is a venue where locals challenge Miss Marple to solve recent crimes. One Tuesday evening a group gathers at Miss Marple’s house and the conversation turns to unsolved crimes. The case of the disappearing bloodstains; the thief who committed his crime twice over; the message on the death-bed of a poisoned man which read ‘heap of fish’; the strange case of the invisible will; a spiritualist who warned that ‘Blue Geranium’ meant death. Now pit your wits

Lord Edgware dies

Image
Series: Hercule Poirot #9  Author: Agatha Christie Genre: Mystery/Thriller Original publication date: 1933 Book description:   An Agatha Christie mystery story. Poirot had been present when Jane bragged of her plan to ‘get rid of’ her estranged husband. Now the monstrous man was dead. And yet the great Belgian detective couldn’t help feeling that he was being taken for a ride. After all, how could Jane have stabbed Lord Edgware to death in his library at exactly the same time she was seen dining with friends? And what could be her motive now that the aristocrat had finally granted her a divorce? Thoughts: Our favorite detective Poirot is invited to a get together. In there a very well known actress married to the also well known Lord Edgware. They had a very strained relationship. Jane wished to get rid of her husband and request the help of Poirot to talk some sense into her husband to sign their divorce. As usual, Poirot has a weak spot for young beautiful women. That seems to

Nick is the young and reckless mistress of End House, an imposing structure perched on the rocky cliffs of St. Loo. Poirot has taken a particular interest in the young woman who has recently narrowly escaped a series of life-threatening accidents. Something tells the Belgian sleuth that these so-called accidents are more than just mere coincidences or a spate of bad luck. It seems all too clear to him that someone is trying to do away with poor Nick, but who? And, what is the motive? In his quest for answers, Poirot must delve into the dark history of End House. The deeper he gets into his investigation, the more certain he is that the killer will soon strike again. And, this time, Nick may not escape with her life Thoughts: So we return to Poirot and his good friend Hasting
