The Island

Image
Author: Peter Watts 70 pages Genre: short stories, Sci-fi So what is this book about? It's about space travel, human and machine working together and yet they are at war. The pilot is an AI, it controls the ship and helps human toward their mission and yet it does not feel fond of the humans who in return harbor similar feelings toward It. Chimp is the AI. The AI was built to not be as smart as humans in order to stop it from developing its own Agenda like the Terminators XD Failed plan really. Chimp does develop a plan that almost wins over the humans. Too bad t really can't compete at the same level as humans. Oh well.  There were really interesting concepts that were presented, we have the typical long periods of sleep people take in space travel in order to extend their lives. The concept of life, the purpose of the mission that is mysterious and not explicitly discussed.  I really wonder what the original mission was and when was it supposed to end? The story

Esperanza Rising (Esperanza Renace)

Author: Pam Muñoz Ryan Translated by Nuria Molinero Originally published on 2000 266 pages Details: I bought this book in Spanish for a very particular reason, nostalgia. The first time I read this it was in Spanish from my school's library so when I felt the need to buy it in order to reread it .... The decision to look for it in Spanish won, it really wasn't a competition at all. Book description (from my P.O.V): It is a story about a girl's journey (experience) as she moves from a very privileged life in Aguascalientes Mexico to a more regular life in USA. Disclaimer: This is the maybe 3rd time I am reading this book but I still like it so very much. So we're going to try to make a more critical opinion about it. I will definitely try but can't promise to stick to it XD *Characters: 10.0 -The main character is Esperanza and she is a typical sheltered girl. She lives with her loving parents who are well off, having people looking after them and tending t

We Were Young

Author: Fortesa Latifi  64 pages Genre Poetry So this ones can't be used the same categories I devised for novels so I will simply rate it on how I'm  feeling about it. The poems were not connecting to me at all. It might have something to do with the fact that I have been feeling down and the poems were definitely not helping my mood. But still, the fact is that I wouldn't really recommend this collection, at least not now. I might need to reread it, later on, to see if my feelings about it change. But for now, I gave it 1.5 - 2.0 stars.

The Partner

Image
Author: John Grishman  366 pages Genre: Adult, Thriller Book description(from GoodReads): They watched Danilo Silva for days before they finally grabbed him. He was living alone, a quiet life on a shady street in Brazil; a simple life in a modest home, certainly not one of luxury. Certainly no evidence of the fortune they thought he had stolen. He was much thinner and his face had been altered. He spoke a different language, and spoke it very well. But Danilo had a past with many chapters. Four years earlier he had been Patrick Lanigan, a young partner in a prominent Biloxi law firm. He had a pretty wife, a new daughter, and a bright future. Then one cold winter night Patrick was trapped in a burning car and died a horrible death. When he was buried his casket held nothing more than his ashes. From a short distance away, Patrick watched his own burial. Then he fled. Six weeks later, a fortune was stolen from his ex-law firm's offshore account. And Patrick fled some more. But

Blue Lily, Lily Blue

Image
Author: Maggie Stiefvater 391 pages Genre: Magical Realism, YA Book description: Blue Sargen has found things. For the first time in her life, she has friends she can trust, a grou to which she can belong. The raven boys have taken her in as one of their own. Their problems have become hers, and her problems have become theirs.   The trick with found things, is how easily they can be lost. Friends can betray. Mothers can dissapear. Visions can mislead. Certainities can unravel.   Characters: 10.0 Friends are closer and the relationships between the soon to be couples keep growing. I love even more the raven boys than in the first two books, the family relationship Blue lives still inspire my wish to have that kind of close relation in every family. Families do not have to be always agreeing on what to do, nor always be best friends, but the trust they have in one another.  Plot 8.5 The story starts to pick up. The raven boys start to make progress in their search, th

Revolting Rhymes

Image
Author Roald Dahl 51pages Genre: Children Book description (from Good Reads): Do you think Cinderella married the prince and lived happily ever after, and that the three little pigs outsmarted the wolf? Think again! Premier storyteller Roald Dahl twists the fate of six favorite fairy tales, in this picture book edition with vibrant new cover art by Quentin Blake. Fairy tales have never been more revolting!  So I am not sure how to rate children's books The stories were very short and based on the commonly known fairy tales. So I will simply say that I had a great time reading this version of or fairytales. Totally worth it, and I'm sure more parents will laugh at them than children but it is very exciting read even for little kids.  I used this book for the challenge of Emojiathon, Read a book with less than 100 pages.

More Than We Can Tell

Image
Author: Brigid Kemmerer  410 pages Genre: YA Contemporary Book Description (from Good Reads): Rev Fletcher is battling the demons of his past. But with loving adoptive parents by his side, he’s managed to keep them at bay...until he gets a letter from his abusive father and the trauma of his childhood comes hurtling back. She can solve any problem with the right code, but when an online troll’s harassment escalates, she’s truly afraid. When Rev and Emma meet, they both long to lift the burden of their secrets and bond instantly over their shared turmoil. But when their situations turn dangerous, their trust in each other will be tested in ways they never expected. This must-read story will once again have readers falling for Brigid Kemmerer’s emotional storytelling. Opinion: Characters: 8.5 Rev is an amazing person, who faced struggles far t

Reboot

Image
Author: Amy Tintera  365 pages Genre: Sci-fi Book description (from Good Reads):  Five years ago, Wren Connolly was shot three times in the chest. After 178 minutes she came back as a Reboot: stronger, faster, able to heal, and less emotional. The longer Reboots are dead, the less human they are when they return. Wren 178 is the deadliest Reboot in the Republic of Texas. Now seventeen years old, she serves as a soldier for HARC (Human Advancement and Repopulation Corporation). Wren’s favorite part of the job is training new Reboots, but her latest newbie is the worst she’s ever seen. As a 22, Callum Reyes is practically human. His reflexes are too slow, he’s always asking questions, and his ever-present smile is freaking her out. Yet there’s something about him she can’t ignore. When Callum refuses to follow an order, Wren is given one last chance to get him in line—or she’ll have to eliminate him. Wren has never disobeyed before and knows if she does, she’ll be eliminated, too.

Harry Poter and the Sorcerer's Stone

Image
Author: J.K. Rowling 309 pages Genre: Children, Fantasy Book description (taken from Good Reads): "Turning the envelope over, his hand trembling, Harry saw a purple wax seal bearing a coat of arms; a lion, an eagle, a badger and a snake surrounding a large letter 'H'." Harry Potter has never even heard of Hogwarts when the letters start dropping on the doormat at number four, Privet Drive. Addressed in green ink on yellowish parchment with a purple seal, they are swiftly confiscated by his grisly aunt and uncle. Then, on Harry's eleventh birthday, a great beetle-eyed giant of a man called Rubeus Hagrid bursts in with some astonishing news: Harry Potter is a wizard, and he has a place at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. An incredible adventure is about to begin! I don't think anyone really doesn't know about Harry Potter by now and to tell you the truth that idea I had of doing ratings by category to every book, yes that won't work.

Persepolis

Image
Author: Marjane Strapi  153 pages Genre: Autobiography, memoir, nonfiction Book description(from Good Reads): Wise, funny, and heartbreaking, Persepolis is Marjane Satrapi’s memoir of growing up in Iran during the Islamic Revolution. In powerful black-and-white comic strip images, Satrapi tells the story of her life in Tehran from ages six to fourteen, years that saw the overthrow of the Shah’s regime, the triumph of the Islamic Revolution, and the devastating effects of war with Iraq. The intelligent and outspoken only child of committed Marxists and the great-granddaughter of one of Iran’s last emperors, Marjane bears witness to a childhood uniquely entwined with the history of her country. Persepolis paints an unforgettable portrait of daily life in Iran and of the bewildering contradictions between home life and public life. Marjane’s child’s-eye view of dethroned emperors, state-sanctioned whippings, and heroes of the revolution allows us to learn as she does the history o

Scythe

Image
Author: Neil Shusterman 433 pages Genre: YA Sci-fi Book description (from goodreads):  A world with no hunger, no disease, no war, no misery. Humanity has conquered all those things and has even conquered death. Now scythes are the only ones who can end life—and they are commanded to do so, in order to keep the size of the population under control. Citra and Rowan are chosen to apprentice to a scythe—a role that neither wants. These teens must master the “art” of taking life, knowing that the consequence of failure could mean losing their own. So using the new lovely rating system: Characters 10 The main characters are lovable, Rowan and Citra simply are great. They are not perfect each has their own teenage issues be it as they may be. Then they each show such growth they both become mature beyond their years.  Roan especially faced huge moral fights and yet still tried to escape from, I mean tried no one is perfect. Scythe Faraday and Scythe Curie are also high stand

New Rating system

Image
So after much consideration, which means one afternoon really. I decided to make my rating of books more systematized. Because it really needs to be a more defined way. So far I have done it not arbitrary but for opinion and not always following the same criteria for each of the books I read. So the plan is: 1. I want to consider several categories. Seven to be specific and they will be rated from zero to ten, with zero being the worst and 10 the best. 2. Then be averaged in order to get an overall value for the book. 3. The average value will be then be converted into the 1 to 5 star rating I normally use.

Dream Thieves

Image
Author: Maggie Stiefvater  437 pages Genre:  Magical realism/Young Adult/Paranormal Book Description: Ronan Lynch has secrets. Some he keeps from others, some he kees from himself. One Secret: Ronan can bring things out of his dreams. And sometimes he's not the only one who wants those things. Ronan is one of the raven boys- a group of friends, practically brothers, searching for a dead king named Glendower, who they think is hidden somewhere in the hills by their elite private school, Anglionby Academy. The path to Glendower has long lived as an undercurrent beneath town. But now, like Ronan's secrets, it is beginning to rise to the surface- changing everything in its wake.  This story gives us a lot of development in the characters lives but the initial search for the king does progress a bit slower. Nevertheless, I just love the story, the little eye-opening happening to Blue, the girl is accepting her own feelings. the little clues that indicate the future relatio

A Wind in the Door

Image
Author: Madeleine L'Engle 240 pages Genre: Children's literature Book description: Just before Meg Murry's little brother, Charles Wallace, falls deathly ill, he sees dragons in the vegetable garden. The dragons turn out to be Proginoskes, a cherubim composed of wings and eyes, wind and flame. It is up to Meg and  Proginoskes, along with Meg's friend Calvin, to save Charles Wallace's life. To do so, they must travel deep within Charles Wallace o attempt to defeat the Echthroi- those who hate- and restore brilliant harmony and joy tot he rhythm of creation, the song of the universe. So the second part f the story is so much better, for some reason I had not really enjoyed a wrinkle in time but not I found I liked it a lot the second part. Even Meg, a girl who I found overly annoying the first part was pleasant to follow. She is the main character and she has no idea what she's doing but manages to overcome her faults mainly and then saves everyone (refere
