Harry Poter and the Sorcerer's Stone

Author: J.K. Rowling
309 pages
Genre: Children, Fantasy
Book description (taken from Good Reads):
"Turning the envelope over, his hand trembling, Harry saw a purple wax seal bearing a coat of arms; a lion, an eagle, a badger and a snake surrounding a large letter 'H'."

Harry Potter has never even heard of Hogwarts when the letters start dropping on the doormat at number four, Privet Drive. Addressed in green ink on yellowish parchment with a purple seal, they are swiftly confiscated by his grisly aunt and uncle. Then, on Harry's eleventh birthday, a great beetle-eyed giant of a man called Rubeus Hagrid bursts in with some astonishing news: Harry Potter is a wizard, and he has a place at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. An incredible adventure is about to begin!

I don't think anyone really doesn't know about Harry Potter by now and to tell you the truth that idea I had of doing ratings by category to every book, yes that won't work. I am not able to objectively rate anything related to HP. I am not sure if the delight and enjoyment of growing up with this story makes it possible for me to objectively make a decision about the quality of it.

  • Characters 10
    • The characters introduced in the story, I believe you start to hold them close to your heart even ignoring what's to come.
    • You see the golden trio form, going from tentative friends, from being annoyed by and can't stand her (the way the boys thought of Hermione of course)
    • The way secondary characters such as Neville just make you want to cheer him on. And earn your love simply by being around their friends, by facing issues you can totally relate you.
    • The whole lot of them end up earning a space in your mind and heart be it in a good way or not.
  • Plot 9.0 - 10.0
    • Again hard to tell, I already know the universe and love it! But still, the storyline moves very straight forward. Can't complain much.
    • There were some spots that left gaping holes of what is that? For example, the show of Harry's magic growing up, why did no one check on Harry as a Child? Do Magic of Ministry no have Social Services? I don't know that is never addressed but I guess it is not something children, the intended audience, are able to catch on very much therefore if I still give it a high rating.
    • For the age range intended the plot was solid. And even for older readers it really is no issue unless you try to analyze it too much, you know if you tend to make it fit to reality. But oh well this book is one you read for fun.
  • Logic 8.5
    • The only thing that did not make sense to me was the spell or the protection from Harry's mother. Why would it burn Voldemort? Again magic but that kind of magic is never really explained.
    • The accidental magi Harry does while growing up with the Dursley's ... I never understood ho accidental magic works. I guess it could make sense if it was explained at some point but well during the story a lot of things that are obvious to the witches and wizards they keep forgetting Harry does not know so that could be one of the details they simply forget to mention because it is so everyday life that no one pays attention to it.
    • The other thing that was never specifically mentioned is who takes the muggle borns to get their school supplies. Do the parents get maps and instructions on how to get to magical shops? Where did Hermione get the information to know what kind of background study to do before going to Howarts? Maybe they get manuals? And if so, why did Harry not get something like that?
    • But again all this is simply a personal view that really does not take much from my enjoyment of the story or anything.
  • Writing style 10.0
    • Don't know much about judging this but obviously, there were some things missing from explanations but I still love the way the story unfolds. The magic is explained and presented in the way it seems very natural for someone who knows nothing about it to figure it out.
  • Enjoyment 10.0  no need to ramble any mor about it.
  • Intrigue 10.0 again I really can't say it is fair to say that because I already know what's going to happen I don't feel the urgent need to finish the book. But even after knowing what's coming you really want to continue the book. The story is still interesting for rereading. That is achieving something alright!
  • Intention 10.0
    • If the intention is to entertain completely achieved.
    • If the intent is to give value to hard work, to perseverance in your everyday life be it to gaining friends, to improve in class, to feel accepted by your peers. It is all achieved.
    • The intention is like any other book to be relatable to children and see their favorite fictional characters overcome hard situations and draw inspiration and courage to maybe do the same.
    • It really depends on your point of view but from most books there is something you can analyze and benefit from. But from this one, in particular, I don't know if I can learn anymore, it is simply been too present in my life for too long.

So my overall rating is 9.78 which obviously becomes a 5 star rating yey no surprise there.

So this book was read to accomplish the challenge
1. #Randomathon read a HP book
2. #Lost-A-Thon read an ebook
