Persepolis

Author: Marjane Strapi

153 pages
Genre: Autobiography, memoir, nonfiction
Book description(from Good Reads):
Wise, funny, and heartbreaking, Persepolis is Marjane Satrapi’s memoir of growing up in Iran during the Islamic Revolution. In powerful black-and-white comic strip images, Satrapi tells the story of her life in Tehran from ages six to fourteen, years that saw the overthrow of the Shah’s regime, the triumph of the Islamic Revolution, and the devastating effects of war with Iraq. The intelligent and outspoken only child of committed Marxists and the great-granddaughter of one of Iran’s last emperors, Marjane bears witness to a childhood uniquely entwined with the history of her country.
Persepolis paints an unforgettable portrait of daily life in Iran and of the bewildering contradictions between home life and public life. Marjane’s child’s-eye view of dethroned emperors, state-sanctioned whippings, and heroes of the revolution allows us to learn as she does the history of this fascinating country and of her own extraordinary family. Intensely personal, profoundly political, and wholly original, Persepolis is at once a story of growing up and a reminder of the human cost of war and political repression. It shows how we carry on, with laughter and tears, in the face of absurdity. And, finally, it introduces us to an irresistible little girl with whom we cannot help but fall in love.

Personal Opinion:

  • Characters 9.0
    • I like the Satrapi family but the lovely Marjane was annoying in my opinion at certain times. It is understandable she was a child and she had her own opinions about what her country and the people around her were going through and she acts so immature (again she was a child that does makes sense). I mean come on she was growing up it is expected that she let her imagination run and as any child, she was sometimes thoughtless, hurtful to others and she tended to exaggerate her stories... She was a very real kid, I tend to run away from kids so that might be the reason she was not my favorite person.
  • Enjoyment 6.5
    • The story was good but it depressed me, so I can't really say I enjoyed it too much. I do not like to read about tragic events, it makes me feel down too easily.
    • The fact that this is exposing real events make it even worse for me.
  • Intention 10.0
    • 100% reached really.
    • It was a bad period you just have to accept it (That is totally for myself).
    • Reality is a lot of times ugly.
    • It is full of violence, deaths, struggles and loses be it material, spiritual and well of people.
  • Writing style 8.5 and plot 9.0
    • I love the artwork.
    • The format and the fact that it is told from the perspective of a child takes a lot of the darkness from the story because it is told only from the eyes of Marjane.
    • It is a memoir and it obviously is told only from the perspective of a girl. In order to have it realistic, Marjane only included things, information and facts as they were seen from the perspective of a girl the age she was while they were happening.
    • I knew nothing of the background of eh political struggles or history of the country so maybe I just got lost because I lack the necessary start information.
    • In some parts it was annoying to not have more information, we only had the little piece she had found out and then the whatever happened next to the other people in the story was never explored or explained.
    • Makes sense this is a story of her childhood not a political or historical tale of the country's struggles.
    • But still, I got the feeling that we dod not get the whole story of what was happening.
    • These issues are totally personal preference really.
  • Logic 7.5
    • Sometimes Marjane acted foolishly in my opinion. While living through what she was facing I believe she should have acted with more caution. No one really knows what's going in other people's head, so she can't be expected to act like I would have in her situation.
    • I part I'm amazed that she and her family had enough determination to still try to enjoy life even if it meant breaking their country's laws.
    • Marjane had the strength to rebel against her family, the school directives, fight the norm society was dictating for females.
    • It did require a lot of willpower and bravery.
    • I would not have acted the same. Complete coward here. He actions while do not make sense to me at times, I do ADMIRE her courage.
  • Intrigue 8.5
    • It was very interesting, I mean I was lost in some parts but I so needed to know what happened next.
    • I would have liked more details in what was happening around the country and what happened to the other people in the story, sometimes a person showed up and then vanished without any sort of update on their lives.
    • I do understand this is a memoir, therefore, it is only about Marjane. I would have liked more details.
    • Now though this book planted the seed of curiosity. I might just need to read some more about  Iran during the Islamic Revolution.
So in average this book got a 8.42 so that means it a 4 star rating.

This book  I used it to accomplish the challenges of reading a graphic novel in the Randomathon and Lost-A-Thon.
