Reboot

Author: Amy Tintera

365 pages
Genre: Sci-fi
Book description (from Good Reads):
Five years ago, Wren Connolly was shot three times in the chest. After 178 minutes she came back as a Reboot: stronger, faster, able to heal, and less emotional. The longer Reboots are dead, the less human they are when they return. Wren 178 is the deadliest Reboot in the Republic of Texas. Now seventeen years old, she serves as a soldier for HARC (Human Advancement and Repopulation Corporation).

Wren’s favorite part of the job is training new Reboots, but her latest newbie is the worst she’s ever seen. As a 22, Callum Reyes is practically human. His reflexes are too slow, he’s always asking questions, and his ever-present smile is freaking her out. Yet there’s something about him she can’t ignore. When Callum refuses to follow an order, Wren is given one last chance to get him in line—or she’ll have to eliminate him. Wren has never disobeyed before and knows if she does, she’ll be eliminated, too. But she has also never felt as alive as she does around Callum.

The perfect soldier is done taking orders.

So yeah this story was surprisingly much better than expected. After accidentally obtaining the second book, I simply had to get the first one in order to read the following one.

Opinion:

  • Characters 10.0
    • Even if the reboots are described as dead people who rose from the dead and therefore are nothing mere shadows from their former human selves, they are almost like any other teen. They are simply physically stronger.
    • The love story that develops here is very sweet. I simply like it better when it is developed over time instead of them loving each other within 5 minutes. I mean the reboots live in a world where they experience so much unpleasant things that falling in love is the last in their agenda. So it makes sense that the relationship develop slowly and without much love discussion like in most stories.
  • Plot 10.0
    • It is the introduction to the world and it is explored as we go along.
    • It is a fast-paced story. It does have the typical troupe of one of the best falling for the not so good... But it does not put off my interest in the story whatsoever.
  • Writing Style 8.5
    • Simple, straightforward and easy to read.
    • Like it a lot.
  • Logic 8.0 Spoiler maybe so skip the whole section for the plot if you don't like any kind of give away, please.
    • I do not get the whole Reboot because of a virus thing. I mean:
      • Why are reboots less capable of emotions? Is it a biological side effect of being dead? If so why does Wren feel more than the other over 120s?
      • Why do people who are longer dead become stronger?
      • How do the drugs work?
      • How can the aggressiveness and canivalism instinct pass simply by waiting, nice words of comfort from people they care about?
      • What kind of magic does the drug make that within minutes the antidote are taking effect and the afflicted are so nice and dandy?
    • Oh well, several questions rose while reading about Reboots. But still the story is very enjoyable, I simply like to take the more scientific aspect and explore it.
  • Enjoyment 10.0
    • Love it, no need to explore more on that.

The average rating 9.14 therefore this story is converted to a 5.0-star rating.
