Rini was born anyway, and now she’s trying to bring her mother back from a world without magic. Things to consider: Characters: 9.5 The return of some of our favorite people in Eleanor West's Home for Wayward Children and we get to meet new and interesting people.  Friendships are developed and we get the feel of other worlds as well. Plot: 8.5 This book has a lot more going on compared to the other ones, the children face an almost impossible quest and go against all kind of odds. The story does have a much faster pace.  Writing Style 8.5 I love the way these books are so

Down Among Sticks and Bones

Image
Author: Seanan McGuire  Pages 187 Series: Wayward Children Genre: YA Fantasy Book Description (from Good Reads):  Twin sisters Jack and Jill were seventeen when they found their way home and were packed off to Eleanor West’s Home for Wayward Children. This is the story of what happened first… Jacqueline was her mother’s perfect daughter—polite and quiet, always dressed as a princess. If her mother was sometimes a little strict, it’s because crafting the perfect daughter takes discipline. Jillian was her father’s perfect daughter—adventurous, thrill-seeking, and a bit of a tom-boy. He really would have preferred a son, but you work with what you've got. They were five when they learned that grown-ups can’t be trusted. They were twelve when they walked down the impossible staircase and discovered that the pretense of love can never be enough to prepare you a life filled with magic in a land filled with mad scientists and death and choices. The Wind in the Willow

Image
Author: Kennet Grahame Pages: 256 Genre: Children First Published: October 1908 Book Description (from Good Reads):  Meet little Mole, willful Ratty, Badger the perennial bachelor, and petulant Toad. Over one hundred years since their first appearance in 1908, they've become emblematic archetypes of eccentricity, folly, and friendship. And their misadventures-in gypsy caravans, stolen sports cars, and their Wild Wood-continue to capture readers' imaginations and warm their hearts long after they grow up. Begun as a series of letters from Kenneth Grahame to his son, The Wind in the Willows is a timeless tale of animal cunning and human camaraderie. Children story that is a very good option to read to children, I just loved it as an option for my niece and yet it was not overly heart touching or extremely interesting, it was an ok story but I still have issues getting into most of the classic children stories, there is really not that much excitement.  I will not ventur

This Song Will Save Your Life

Image
Author: Leila Sales  Pages: 276 Genre: Contemporary First Published: September 2013 Book Description (from Good Reads): Making friends has never been Elise Dembowski’s strong suit. All throughout her life, she’s been the butt of every joke and the outsider in every conversation. When a final attempt at popularity fails, Elise nearly gives up. Then she stumbles upon a warehouse party where she meets Vicky, a girl in a band who accepts her; Char, a cute, yet mysterious disc jockey; Pippa, a carefree spirit from England; and most importantly, a love for DJing. Warnings : The story does mention self-harm, suicidal thoughts, bullying and eating disorders(very, very lightly).  Things to consider: Characters: 7.5 Elise is not my favorite character, she is deeply flawed and it took a while to get to a point of being ok with her. She is like any super cliche a bit exaggerated teen in high school. EVERYBODY hates her, yet no one ever tried to be her friend. A bit annoying at so

The Devi's Grin

A dead man is found floating in the city’s waterworks. Fearing an epidemic, the Metropolitan Police call upon bacteriologist Dr Anton Kronberg to examine the body. All signs point toward cholera having killed the man…but for faint marks around wrists and ankles. Evidence for a crime is weak, and the police lose interest in the case. But Kronberg suspects that the dead man’s final days had been steeped in cruelty. Soon, a second victim is found, and Kronberg gets embroiled in a web of abduction, abuse, and murder. But catching a killer and staying alive would be easier if the doctor didn’t have secrets of…her own. Things to consider Characters: 8.5 Anna is a decided woman, even if she has to lie her way through her life anything as long as she can continue to practice her line of work. Sh

Reasons to Be Pretty

Image
Author: Neil LaBute  Pages: 152 First Published: June 2008 Genre: Contemporary, Drama Book Description (from Good Reads):  In Reasons to Be Pretty, Greg's tight-knit social circle is thrown into turmoil when his offhand remarks about a female coworker's pretty face and his own girlfriend Steph's lack thereof get back to Steph. As their relationships crumble, the four friends are forced to confront a sea of deceit, infidelity, and betrayed trust in their journey to answer that oh-so-American question: How much is pretty worth?
