Book description (from Good Reads): Cassidy Blake's parents are The Inspectres, a (somewhat inept) ghost-hunting team. But Cass herself can REALLY see ghosts. In fact, her best friend, Jacob, just happens to be one. When the Inspectres head to ultra-haunted Edinburgh, Scotland, for their new TV Show Cass and Jacob come along. In Scotland, Cass is surrounded by ghosts, not all of them friendly. Then she meets Lara, a girl who can also see the dead. But Lara tells Cassidy that as an Inbetweener, their job is to send ghosts permanently beyond the Veil. Cass isn't sure about her new mission, but she does know the sinister Red Raven haunting the city doesn't belong in their world. Cassidy's power will draw her into an epic fight that stretches through the worlds of the living and the dead, in order to save herself.
Things to consider:
Characters: 9.0
Cassidy starts being a bit too prone to complain, but then again if you kept seeing people who the rest of the world do not see, well I guess that's understandable. She is waiting, she wants to have a reason why the thing that happened to her did, she wants to know why she's the only one who can see the ghosts.
Lara is very interesting at first very coarse towards Cassidy and Jacob. Her opinion on ghost so very different from Cassidy's and she was so arrogant as well. But she grows on you as the two girls get closer.
Cassidy's parents are adorable, even if the story falls into the classic parents are always clueless and do not notice when their child is off doing something extraordinary (and dangerous). They are good parents still they care, they worry and they try to give her the bet they can. Also in real life other than having non-traditional jobs that type of parents that make other kid envious and taking you to vacation in Europe, yeah that counts as awesome in most people's opinion.
Plot: 8.5
The storyline is easy to grasp, it does feel a bit slow and like not much really happened but the story is more character-based and it feels like the intro to a bigger thing. Furthermore, the adventures in Middle grade-children's book is usually more to the point without any twists or sticky situations that make following it difficult.
Logic: 9.0
Writing Style: 10.0
The way it was told, the pace, the slow building friendship and even the late discovery of the world beyond the Veil and the power the people who can move between the worlds… It was a very good match, the story develops so naturally and you just fall right into it. Great performance, personally I listened to the Audio book, it makes it a very good experience but I can see myself going to reread it the traditional format and see if my experience feels any different.
Enjoyment: 10.0
Intrigue: 8.5
At the beginning of the story, you already want to know the WHY? It is obvious that Cassidy yearns to know the reason, that she needs to know what she's supposed to do other than see the ghosts. Then as the story goes on, you get some answers and yet some new questions arise, what about Jacob, what is his story? He can also do things not many ghosts can? The story just keeps you going trying to find the next answer and the next question.
Intention: 9.0
Things we learned:
Trust your friends, and do not fear to make new ones.
Be humble, sometimes you need someone else to be able to see their point of view and if it does not match exactly with your own, well it mean you might not know it all or it is simply a different perspective. One must learn to respect other people's beliefs.
