Things considered:
- Characters: 8.0
- Cinder annoys me at some points but she is very realistic. She doesn't seem to realize that it is the utmost importance to hide from the authority, especially from the Lunar royalty. Her behavior is very reckless in most of the story.
- Kai is very unexplored. He is barely a cute boy who has a lot of responsibilities. He is forced to go through a difficult situation, a family tragedy and then thrown into a huge responsibility and is forced to make a big decision that carries the destiny of the nation if not the world.
- Poeny is sweet and maybe tries to be a good sister but she is not too explored either.
- This book does not explore much of the people. It is more world building and the set up for the series.
- Logic: 8.0
- The reaction of the Cinder is understandable, her life gets thrown out of the window and then a whole new very different one given to her. She is still a teen, her reluctance to accept her new reality is comprehensible.
- Kai's indecision and desperation to look for alternatives even if he never gets anywhere is very realistic.
- Plot: 8.0
- Again insta-love/attraction. Very nice twist of making the princess this time.
- The story is easy to read and the story is fast-paced.
- Defect: Ending is clinffhangery.
- Writing Style: 8.0
- Easy to read style and it explores the world very superficially but it is clearly only the beginning. The exploring and introduction of characters is also only superficial.
- Intrigue: 7.0
- It is more family drama, and the intrigue starts to begin but then the end gets to fast. There is build up for later in the story.
- Enjoyment: 8.5
- It is very entertaining and a very particular retelling of a story you already know and adore yet it becomes so unique and able to stand so on its own as well.
- Intention: 9.0
- Lessons it means to learn: No discrimination. You can't just hate people for being the way they are. People who are different than yourself do not stop being human just because you dislike them.
- Lesson two: Appreciate the people around you, you might lose them any minute.
Total score: 56.5
Average: 8.0
Star Rating: 4.0
