The Blinding Knife
Author: Brent Weeks
Narrator: Simon Vance
Length: 671 pages; 24 hours
Genre: Fantasy
Book Description (from Scribd): Gavin Guile is dying.
He'd thought he had five years left--now he has less than one. With fifty thousand refugees, a bastard son, and an ex-fiancée who may have learned his darkest secret, Gavin has problems on every side. All magic in the world is running wild and threatens to destroy the Seven Satrapies. Worst of all, the old gods are being reborn, and their army of color wights is unstoppable. The only salvation may be the brother whose freedom and life Gavin stole sixteen years ago.
Thoughts:
The story feels more gripping and you feel you can't put it down. It is faster paced in part because the magic system is already explained and we follow Kip trying to train to become a Black Guard and train his abilities. There is a lot more of the political intrigues being revealed, partly because of Gavin, Andros (the prism's father) and the other satrapies. We see plotting from the color prince, he is getting stronger and manages to continue to make his havoc. The war is well on it's way.
We get more romance in this story, there is a lot of love inspired actions since book one especially in Gavin but this book takes the notch one up, adding more drama not only from Gavin but from Kip as well. Kip is also faced with a possible romance of his own. Though his, is more appropriately described as a teens struggle with his own self worth and issues with his image and then fantasizing about a strong, bright young woman who might or might not be interested in him. From his point of view, it is pretty hard to actually know if the feelings are sincere on her side. **Spoiler: Kip does not get any true romance, but it seems like is coming a bit later on.**
We see character growth in Kip mainly, but also Gavin matures and decides to fight for what he wants, still he is behaving reckless but oh well his character growth is only partial. Or maybe there is only more passion shown from him and caring for the woman he loves, the friends he has made, his son and that makes you care a little bit more about him.
It feels like a lot of things happen and the ending is so meant to be a cliff hanger, a lot of things are revealed from Gavin, and from Simon the crazy policromat that serves the color prince that leaves you wanting more. Unfortunately, the fact that this story is still not completely out makes me want to take my time finishing it, it is way worse to catch up to the last published books and yet not reach the end of the journey.
We need to find out plenty of things, will Kip continue his training and become a full policromat? who is actually the Lightbringer, is it even real? What will Gavin do now? What will Andros Guile do?
And one other question, will Kip become if not the Lightbringer, he next Prism?
Too many questions still.
