Author: Lisa Jewell

Genre: Mystery, Domestic Thriller
Book Description (from Good Reads):

THEN

She was fifteen, her mother's golden girl. She had her whole life ahead of her. And then, in the blink of an eye, Ellie was gone.

NOW
It’s been ten years since Ellie disappeared, but Laurel has never given up hope of finding her daughter.

And then one day a charming and charismatic stranger called Floyd walks into a cafĂ© and sweeps Laurel off her feet.

Before too long she’s staying the night at this house and being introduced to his nine year old daughter.

Poppy is precocious and pretty - and meeting her completely takes Laurel's breath away.

Because Poppy is the spitting image of Ellie when she was that age. And now all those unanswered questions that have haunted Laurel come flooding back.

What happened to Ellie? Where did she go?

Who still has secrets to hide?

Thoughts:
It was a bit slow to get into for me personally. It took me quite an effort to pick it up because in the few first pages it did not capture my interest all that much. But once I began to actually read it (after maybe a third of the way through) it captured my interest and I finished it in a single day.
It is an easy thing to read and it has enough intrigue that it inspires you to finish it fast. Though it is not mind-blowing, if you are very into Thriller mysteries it will feel very predictable so be warned when going into it.

The family relationship described is a good picture of what a tragedy could result in. I felt it a very real consequence. If the grief is allowed to conquer, everything else it falls apart. You can't be self-centered and ignore the people you have left because you miss the one person that is gone. It is not like you will not care, the uncertainty is awful but it should make you appreciate the ones you have left not completely ignore them. But each person deals with grief differently. In this book, the Laurel has a very strained relationship with her two children and is alone after divorcing her husband after the disappearance of Ellie. Also, when people say they do not have a favorite child, that it never believable for me and in this case it was extremely apparent that Ellie was Laurel's favorite and with her gone, Laural only placed her even higher pedestal making her underappreciate the children she still has, I find that to be a huge mistake, but it is understandable. Grief is not a good life guide.
Laurel has issues and I dislike some of her decisions, she does open her eyes eventually but it does take a long time for it to happen, again the character development was very good in that sense.

The plot, I felt it was a bit too predictable, you were able to know what was coming, of course, the revelations gave you the little details you might've missed but other than that, you were able to know where it was going.
The ending was a bit too convenient really. But it was still an overall enjoyable read. A good easy read.
