A monster calls
Author: Patrick Ness
Genre: Magical Realism
Original publication date: May 2011
Book description: An unflinching, darkly funny, and deeply moving story of a boy, his seriously ill mother, and an unexpected monstrous visitor.
At seven minutes past midnight, thirteen-year-old Conor wakes to find a monster outside his bedroom window. But it isn't the monster Conor's been expecting-- he's been expecting the one from his nightmare, the nightmare he's had nearly every night since his mother started her treatments. The monster in his backyard is different. It's ancient. And wild. And it wants something from Conor. Something terrible and dangerous.
Thoughts:
So we have a boy Connor who is having a difficult time for several reasons. He feels isolated at school mainly because people do no treat him the same after his schoolmates found out about his mother's illness. He faces bullying, but everything is very different on his mind. Connor has closed off his mind and feelings, not letting anyone, not even himself, he refuses to face his deepest fear. He starts to get visited by a monster in his dreams or are they dreams?
He starts to convince himself about certain things about the monster as he starts to lose control of his sense of reality, at least that's how people see things. As Connor starts to act up but everything is blamed on the circumstances Connor's life is going through and he does not face negative consequences. Connor is tired of people making allowances for him, and when the last bit of normalcy is lost at school he snaps and acts out. I did not like the lack of consequences he faces at school but oh well.
I really enjoyed the story even if it was very heavy. It takes very depressing topics and makes you feel so very much as you follow Connor.
I really liked the story.
