Howl's moving Castle
Author: Diana Wynne Jones
Series: Howl's moving castle #1
Genre: Children's Fantasy
Original Publication date: April 1986
Book description: Sophie has the great misfortune of being the eldest of three daughters, destined to fail miserably should she ever leave home to seek her fate. But when she unwittingly attracts the ire of the Witch of the Waste, Sophie finds herself under a horrid spell that transforms her into an old lady. Her only chance at breaking it lies in the ever-moving castle in the hills: the Wizard Howl's castle. To untangle the enchantment, Sophie must handle the heartless Howl, strike a bargain with a fire demon, and meet the Witch of the Waste head-on. Along the way, she discovers that there's far more to Howl—and herself—than first meets the eye.
Thoughts:
The story should have been a quick nice read.
I was not feeling it, Sophie seemed to be the type of girl who I should really like.
She is the oldest girl in her family and has a very low opinion of herself. She gets cursed by the big bad witch for a misunderstanding we do not know about until almost the end of the story.
I was very annoyed with Sophie, she looks down on herself too much. She is very jealous and does not accept it to herself even. She is quick to judge and then also very insecure, I mean I get it but still annoys me. This might have been due mainly to my current mood rather than the book itself.
Howl is a mystery for most of the story, you see what he wants you to see and also the fact that everything is through Sophie's very biased point of view you see she's trying to convince herself to see Howl and merge the bad reputation he has with what she is seeing with her own eyes.
I really liked the sisters, the stepmother, the friendships developed here.
This is a standalone story yet it has other stories set in the same world so I might read the next one to see what I think about the author's writing style.
I will give this 3 stars, for now, I will need to reread it a few months later to check if I can enjoy it a bit more.
This book was used to accomplish the challenges:
-The one readathon to rule them all. Resourcefulness read a standalone fantasy book.
-Believathon fantasy children's book.
