Someday Angeline

Author: Louis Sachar
Genre: Fiction, Children's Contemporary
Original publication date: May 1983
Book description: Nobody understands why Angeline is so smart. She could read the first time she picked up a book, she can play the piano without ever having had a lesson, and she even knows what the weather is going to be. But being smart is causing Angeline nothing but trouble. The mean kids in school call her a freak, her teacher finds her troublesome, and even her own father doesn't know what to do with an eight-year-old girl who seems to be a genius. Angeline doesn't want to be either a genius or a freak. She just wants the chance to be herself and be happy. But it's only when she makes friends with a boy the kids call "Goon" and the teacher they call "Mr. Bone" that Angeline gets that chance.

Thoughts:
It is a quick read.
We have a beautiful relationship between a father and a little girl. They have issues, but not due to lack of love, on the contrary, they both love each other very much but have issues to communicate between themselves.
We have a nice friendship between a boy who also has issues to relate to his classmates. He is the class clown always making jokes and making a fool of himself but he is not close to anyone and when they meet he becomes the bright light on school for Angeline. She is a very smart girl but her classmates and even her teacher do not make her experience at school a pleasant time.

There is not character growth here. The bad people continued to be just like at the beginning their behavior and ideas did not change if their actions did change a bit due to the different circumstances.
We had a very convenient ending but oh well it is a children's book so I was not expecting anything different.

I really enjoyed the story.

This book was used for the challenge of Believathon Read a book with real-life issues:
-Angeline faces a little bullying.
-Her mother has passed away.
-A father that loves her but who is unsure of how to communicate with her.
