The bear who speaks bear
Author: Sophie Anderson
Genre: Fantasy
Original publication date: September 2019
Book description: Found abandoned in a bear cave as a baby, 12-year-old Yanka has always felt out of place in her small village. When she wakes up to find that her legs have become bear legs, she sets off into the forest to discover who she is, on a journey that takes her from icy rivers to smouldering mountains, with an ever-growing group of misfits alongside her.
Thoughts:
We have beautiful examples of human beings and animals as well. We have Yanka, her friend Sasha and her Mamoshka. This is a story that is told in episodes to say it in a way. We have Yaka's story told as she explores the forest trying to find the truth about herself and the reason she suddenly has bear legs.
This story is built around a girl who is highly relatable. She feels as an outsider in her village, she is haunted by the question of her birth family and the reason she was found in the forest.
Personally, I have never understood why people feel the need to know who their birth parents are in order to know themselves, my belief has been always that you become part of the family that raises you and you build your own persona. In this case, at least, knowing what happens to Yanka, well that at least gives her a good reason to want to search for people from her past.
Initially, as the story continues to be cut, with stories told as fairy tales but they continue to interrupt Yanka's story. But after you get used to the writing style and get more into Yanka's story the reading flows better.
It took me a while maybe until going through a fourth of the book and then the reading became much easier to go through it. I loved Yanka, Ivan, Mousetrap, oh she develops wonderful friendships and she learns to accept herself the way she is. Even if not everyone is accepting of you, there is always a challenge in living in any place but some of them are worth it.
I used the book as part of Believathon mainly. It could have fit several prompts, a book featuring animal characters or read a seasonal book, this one I relate it to Winter.
