A Game of Thrones
Author: George RR Martin
Series: A song of ice and fire #1
Genre: Fantasy
Original publication date: August 1996
Book description: In a land where summers can last decades and winters a lifetime, trouble is brewing. The cold is returning, and in the frozen wastes of the north of Winterfell, sinister and supernatural forces are massing beyond the kingdom's protective Wall. At the center of the conflict lie the Starks of Winterfell, a family as harsh and unyielding as the land they were born to. Sweeping from a land of brutal cold to a distant summertime kingdom of epicurean plenty, here is a tale of lords and ladies, soldiers and sorcerers, assassins and bastards, who come together in a time of grim omens. Amid plots and counterplots, tragedy and betrayal, victory and terror, the fate of the Starks, their allies, and their enemies hangs perilously in the balance, as each endeavors to win that deadliest of conflicts: the game of thrones.
Thoughts:
It was a very slow read. I was overambitious and wanted to finish the book in 4 days so that did not happen at all.
It is a very interesting story, you get a lot of people and it jumps from one POV to the next and initially, that confused me, but pretty soon I started to care about the characters and making sense of each of the storylines happening at the same time.
I do not have a favorite character I do not think they're good or bad, everyone has a bit of each and that makes them very realistic. There is a ton of drama as people do not reveal their end game plan. It is full of little things happening all over the place. Hard to wrap my mind about it.
I still do not like the boy king, Sansa is a very immature and naive girl. As she was struggling with her shallow and selfish wishes I really hated her stupidity! She was being very dumb as she was picturing becoming the queen and thinking that was all that could matter. She turned her back on her family for that simple reason. Not trying to contradict my own opinion, I like realistic characters and she is, but I still dislike them no matter how logical they may seem.
This is the book that has made me invest a lot of time. Generally, I am reading several books at once, at least 3, while this was going on, I could barely concentrate on two.
This book was used for several challenges, those were:
*Winter Magical Readathon. Read a book with a sword in the cover.
*Get sh*t done. Start a series, finish a book that you put down as I did start this in autumn but put it down for no reason.
*#Newsyearathon. Book you wanted to finish before 2020
