March Wrap up

Image
The end of the month is here and I did not complete all the books I set in my TBR, I had a very pretty reading slump and then at the end of the month, last week, I was like "its already almost the end I can't finish my books" so I gave up. I read 15 out of 26 so I'm 11 books behind. Wow. But let's focus on what we did accomplish. I managed to participate in 4 out of the 5 I intended, so that was a fail as well. So let's give a bit of stats. (Who doesn't love them.) Interesting how I did not get as many audios as I normally do, as I have less travel time in my everyday life. Not bad, I had some very good ratings. My average rating was 3.41 So in regards of the authors: So for once without really trying we have a perfect 50-50

Digital books acquired March

So here are some of the books I have acquired this month. I am trying to cut back my book buying so that goal is obviously not being met! 1. A pinch of magic, Michelle Harrison. A middle grade fantasy, that I know nothing about but Gavin from How to train your Gavin from booktube was recommending it.  2. Heroinas, Elia Barcelo a short story collection of strong independent woman, that fits on the month of Woman enpowerment in Mexico, so it was picked up in a whim but have no idea what its about really. 3. Hasta que deje de llover, Javier Matrinez Again this book was simply picked up, it might be a romance or poetry book.  4. The bento cookbook , a book in case I get a fancy to start cooking, I really want to but I need easy recipes to start off with.  5. Prime minister, Ashley Booth an adult smutty romance, who can say no to that? 6. Prisoner, Skye Warren, Annika Martin a romance set in a prison, interesting I have never read something with that setting, so it could be a grea

Book Haul March

So this month I tried to reduce my book buying, here is the proof. Books bought: 1. El laberinto de los espiritus, Carlos Ruiz Zafon . A historical fiction that had great hype, that really needs to be read simply because I have part of the series, I actually have books 2, 3 ad 4 now, only missing the number 1. 2. El mundo perdido, Micheal Crichton , this is the second installment to the Jurassic world series. 3. Walking Dead Compendium 2 and 3, Robert Kirkman . This is a collection of several volumes of the graphic novel about Rick who is trying to survive the new reality of America, there is a plague of dead that are trying to get you, but most of all what's left of humanity also became monsters.  5. Nightshift, Stephen King as part of my personal challenge to read al the backlist of the author.  6. Salem's lot, Stephen King a mystery horror book about a small town an a monster terrorizing them. 7. Swan Song, Robert McCamman  8. The stand, Stephen King a plague end

GoodReads Choice Awards 2019 pt 1

Image
So one of the challenges I made for myself was to read the selections for the Good Reads Choice Awards 2019. I divided them into 4 categories and made a goal to read each category was set up to read in 3 months. Link of the announcement:  https://magisreading.blogspot.com/2019/11/good-reads-choice-awards-2019-part-1.html So here are the books I planned to read: Fiction: The winner was: The Testaments, Margaret Atwood . I liked this story I gave this 4.0 stars. I enjoyed it better than the first installment of the series, which I did not expect. I enjoy the struggle of the forced servitude women are forced to have and yet you get to see everything happening on the background of the society where not everyone really feels and believes what they hold as the pillar of the society.  This is amazing and I feel that it complements the handmaid's tale so we, that you just need to read them together to feel the full potential be reached.  I was surprised by how much I enjoyed

His days have settled into a new kind of normal. But Magnus should have known there's no such thing as normal in the Nine Worlds. His friends Hearthstone and Blitzen have disappeared. A new hallmate is creating chaos. According to a very nervous goat, a certain object belonging to Thor is still missing, and the thunder god's enemies will stop at nothing to ga

Under Rose-Tainted Skies

Author: Louise Grornall Genre: Contemporary Original publication date: July 2016 Book description:  At seventeen, Norah has accepted that the four walls of her house delineate her life. She knows that fearing everything from inland tsunamis to odd numbers is irrational, but her mind insists the world outside is too big, too dangerous. So she stays safe inside, watching others’ lives through her windows and social media feed. But when Luke arrives on her doorstep, he doesn’t see a girl defined by medical terms and mental health. Instead, he sees a girl who is funny, smart, and brave. And Norah likes what he sees. Their friendship turns deeper, but Norah knows Luke deserves a normal girl. One who can walk beneath the open sky. One who is unafraid of kissing. One who isn’t so screwed up. Can she let him go for his own good—or can Norah learn to see herself through Luke’s eyes? Thoughts: This is a reread, so I knew where it was going since I started it. That generally does not hind

Get to Know the Fantasy Reader

Image
So this is a Tag I saw in Sam's channel Thoughts on Tome. Here is the video  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l5BxUM-ae7 w This Tag was originally: "get to know the Romance reader" but it was changed a bit in order to fit more a Fantasy reader. QUESTIONS:  1. What is your fantasy origin story? (How you came to read your first fantasy novel)   Very classic, I first got interested in Harry Potter when I was in sixth grade, I was a very peculiar kid, I saw the first 3 movies and I insisted on getting the fourth book onwards. I started out of order XD 2. If you could be the hero/heroine in a fantasy novel, who would be the author and what’s one trope you’d insist be in the story?  The author I would pick is Brandon Sanderson and the troupe I like would be underdog starting slow and having issues to get good in any type of magic and yet come up on top. 3. What is a fantasy you’ve read this year, that you want more people to read?  So far this year my favorite

Fighting the slump (Personal Struggles)

Image
So I have been in a weird slumpish mood for the last couple of days. I have finished only 16 books but I still have 14 books that need to finish from my original TBR for this month! There is not enough time in the month to allow me to finish them. The thing to do I have started a few different books: -Before they are Hanged by Joe Abercrombie. Superior Glokta has a problem. How do you defend a city surrounded by enemies and riddled with traitors, when your allies can by no means be trusted, and your predecessor vanished without a trace? It’s enough to make a torturer want to run – if he could even walk without a stick. Northmen have spilled over the border of Angland and are spreading fire and death across the frozen country. Crown Prince Ladisla is poised to drive them back and win undying glory. There is only one problem – he commands the worst-armed, worst-trained, worst-led army in the world. And Bayaz, the First of the Magi, is leading a party of bold adventurers on a peril

A stranger had also come to the Lot, a stranger with a secret as old as evil, a secret that would wreak irreparable harm on those he touched and in turn on those they loved. All would be changed forever—Susan, whose love for Ben could not protect her; Father Callahan, the bad priest who put his eroded faith to one last test; and Mark, a young boy who sees his fantasy world become reality and ironically proves the best equipped to handle the relentless nightmare of 'Salem's Lot.

Books that captivate you

So as in theme, not for everyone really. But I want to make a few book recommendations about books that just are hard to put down and had me so hooked that I found it hard to put it down. I'll try to include a few options for different genres. Mystery/Thriller The partner, John Grishman. This is one of the first if mystery thrillers I read in my life and I loved it. It is about a man who manages to steal a huge amount of money from the firm of lawyers he was working for and go out of the radar. He is on the run, people want to find him bad. The money he took is too much of a temptation.  He is hated by many and people nearly kill him trying to get the location of the money, the police is on his tail as well, for several "crimes". The law is against him but he seems to not care much, he hires a lawyer, an old pal of his, yet everything is against them. I can't say much but it is really interesting if you like legal thrillers and a lot of secrets.  The con

La ultima jugada (The last play)

Author: Fernando Trujillo Sanz Genre: Mystery, Magical Realism Original publication date: July 2010 Book description: Four players in an unusual poker game. Four starngers will face off and play in order to win the only thing that they have in common and that cannot be shared. They agree to participate to get a dangerous and unique game. Three men and a woman, very different among each other watched by a peculiar host. Thoughts: Initially, you do not know what is going on, people seemly at random are receiving an envelope and they stop whatever they are doing and rush to a particular spot.  You get a snip of their different lives.  The game does not make sense, why are they playing poker, they all have their reasons, and they all want to win at any cost.  It is a character-driven story, we have a few revelations, some you expect but others you do not. The price for winning, its interesting and well placed, then each person reacts and what they went to the game. There is a g
