Books that captivate you
So as in theme, not for everyone really. But I want to make a few book recommendations about books that just are hard to put down and had me so hooked that I found it hard to put it down.
I'll try to include a few options for different genres.
Mystery/Thriller
The partner, John Grishman. This is one of the first if mystery thrillers I read in my life and I loved it. It is about a man who manages to steal a huge amount of money from the firm of lawyers he was working for and go out of the radar.
He is on the run, people want to find him bad. The money he took is too much of a temptation.
He is hated by many and people nearly kill him trying to get the location of the money, the police is on his tail as well, for several "crimes". The law is against him but he seems to not care much, he hires a lawyer, an old pal of his, yet everything is against them.
I can't say much but it is really interesting if you like legal thrillers and a lot of secrets.
The confession, John Grishman. This is again another one of
Grishman's works. This follows a man who has been in and out of prison most of his life, he is old and sick, so he's been let out of prison. He is sent to a halfway house and while there he hears about the execution of a young man. The crime Dante is being executed for, is a kidnapping and killing of a young woman, a high schooler at the time.
The body was never found but the police zeroed in on the young man and he was found guilty. No appeals worked and his execution date is set and very close. Travis wants to confess and "stop" the execution but who would have known that no one wants to listen to a confession that can save the life of a person on death row.
This is a race against the clock and trying to get through to the right people at the right time!
I definitely couldn't put it down.
A mystery more romance laced that I have loved since the first time I read it, Someone to watch over me, Judith McNaught. This book I have reread so much that I can't be objective but I get hooked and into the story pretty fast almost as soon as I start it.
Its about Leigh Kendall reveled in her stellar Broadway acting career and in her marriage to Logan Manning, scion of an old New York family. When her husband finds the perfect mountain property for their dream house, he decides to surprise Leigh with her first view of the site. Driving upstate on a winter's night, Leigh is run off the road in the midst of a blinding blizzard. When she awakes in the local hospital, seriously injured, the police inform her that her husband has mysteriously disappeared, and Leigh, although obviously distraught, becomes the focus of their suspicions. The more she discovers about her husband and his business affairs, the less she realizes she knew about Logan Manning. Now, Leigh is heading deeper and deeper into unknown territory... where friends and enemies are impossible to distinguish, and where the truth becomes the most terrifying.
Middle Grade
Holes, Louis Sachar. Stanley Yelnats is under a curse. A curse that began with his no-good-dirty-rotten- pig-stealing-great-great-grandfather and has since followed generations of Yelnats. Now Stanley has been unjustly sent to a boys' detention center, Camp Green Lake, where the warden makes the boys "build character" by spending all day, every day, digging holes: five feet wide and five feet deep. It doesn't take long for Stanley to realize there's more than character improvement going on at Camp Green Lake. The boys are digging holes because the warden is looking for something. Stanley tries to dig up the truth in this inventive and darkly humorous tale of crime and punishment—and redemption.
Esperanza Rising, Pam Muñoz Ryan. Esperanza thought she'd
always live with her family on their ranch in Mexico--she'd always have fancy dresses, a beautiful home, and servants. But a sudden tragedy forces Esperanza and Mama to flee to California during the Great Depression, and to settle in a camp for Mexican farm workers. Esperanza isn't ready for the hard labor, financial struggles, or lack of acceptance she now faces. When their new life is threatened, Esperanza must find a way to rise above her difficult circumstances.
Sci-Fi
The Martian, Andy Weir. I was one of the many people who saw the movie loved it and immediately tried to find the book. I loved it as well. Its about Mark Watney, who was part of a team of people sent to Mars, after a storm the team is forced to evacuate but in an accident on Mark is lost to the team.
He is left behind as the only man on the planet, he struggles with the idea and then decides to find a way to stay alive long enough for the next team to arrive in their scheduled exploration. The good thing about government expeditions they require so much planning and such that he knows the plan for the next one and knows the location of landing as well. Now Mark has to find a way to be alive by the time they get there and catch a ride back to Earth.
Another Sci-Fi but more of a retelling that is very enchanting and
easy to read is The Lunar Chronicles, Marissa Meyer. By now maybe everyone has read them but I read them a few years ago as a recommendation and loved it!
It was a gift from a friend and after finishing Cinder the first one, I just had to go and buy the whole book series in order to finish it!
It is a retelling of the popular fairytales Cinderella, in this story she is an android suffering discrimination as she is not a full human so people look down on her. Red Ridinghood is a normal young girl living in France with her grandma, but the wolf is a bit different than what you would expect, he is a Lunar soldier.
Fantasy
Hard to narrow it down, I want to kind of add Harry Potter series, that could simply be nostalgic or the Rick Riordan books my favorite is the Magnus Chase and the gods of Asgard trilogy, well not I actually loved them all....
Honorable mentions:
Elantris, Brandon Sanderson. This book I had an interesting experience with it. I was very intimidated by just looking at it. I was scared to start it but then I once I began I could not put it down, it was an amazing ride.
As I can't summarize it at all I'll just include here the description from Good Reads. So here it is:
Elantris was the capital of Arelon: gigantic, beautiful, literally radiant, filled with benevolent beings who used their powerful magical abilities for the benefit of all. Yet each of these demigods was once an ordinary person until touched by the mysterious transforming power of the Shaod. Ten years ago, without warning, the magic failed. Elantrians became wizened, leper-like, powerless creatures, and Elantris itself dark, filthy, and crumbling.
Arelon's new capital, Kae, crouches in the shadow of Elantris. Princess Sarene of Teod arrives for a marriage of state with Crown Prince Raoden, hoping -- based on their correspondence -- to also find love. She finds instead that Raoden has died and she is considered his widow. Both Teod and Arelon are under threat as the last remaining holdouts against the imperial ambitions of the ruthless religious fanatics of Fjordell. So Sarene decides to use her new status to counter the machinations of Hrathen, a Fjordell high priest who has come to Kae to convert Arelon and claim it for his emperor and his god.
But neither Sarene nor Hrathen suspect the truth about Prince Raoden. Stricken by the same curse that ruined Elantris, Raoden was secretly exiled by his father to the dark city. His struggle to help the wretches trapped there begins a series of events that will bring hope to Arelon, and perhaps reveal the secret of Elantris itself.
For now, that will be it.
In this case, being so open and broad, it hard to really get out of the most popular ones maybe but hope it helps to try to find a good book to read in case anyone is struggling to decide what to pick next.
I'll try to include a few options for different genres.
