The Blue Sword

Author: Robin McKinley

Series: Damar #1
Genre: Fantasy
Original publication date: October 1982
Book description:
This is the story of Corlath, golden-eyed king of the Free Hillfolk, son of the sons of the Lady Aerin.
And this is the story of Harry Crewe, the Homelander orphan girl who became Harimad-sol, King's Rider, and heir to the Blue Sword, Gonturan, that no woman had wielded since the Lady Aerin herself bore it into battle.
And this is the song of the kelar of the Hillfolk, the magic of the blood, the weaver of destinies.

Thoughts:

The idea of magic here feels very interesting. We have a group of colonizers living in the edge of their civilization and they do not understand the natives of the land.
IT starts very typical and it continues such. We have a girl who is not like other girls Harry. She wants more than sitting at home and do stitch work or some other inane hobby. She is brought to the lands after her father dies and she is taken in by a well off couple who does not have their own children, her older brother who inherits everything reminds her she has to start behaving like a proper lady should in their care, as she is a charity case.
But soon she is taken in by the Hillfolk, as she catches the attention of their King! But of course.
She discovers magic, becomes intrigued by the mystery man, it all felt so predictable.

I really like it as I read but then again as soon as I put it down I do not find any noteworthy thing. There is nothing necessarily wrong but the characters I do not find all that appealing, the plot is ok, the magic is not greatly explained but it's intriguing enough to want to make you continue reading but the plot feels too meandering.
There is very little plot development, it is a very short book. It's an introduction to the word as Harry is new to this culture ad she is training and being introduced like a woman warrior, there are some but not that many and she will serve as an inspiration to the womenfolk of the tribes they represent.
We have epic fights were out Hillfolk face enemies of greater number or strength and the battle for the ultimate freedom.
The ending was also very convenient. I can't complain but it really felt very forgettable, not sure if it picks up later in the series.
Not sure if I'll continue with the rest of the series.

This was used as part of the #AYearAThon link books prompt. This book as picked after Magnus Chase and the sword of summer as it is a fantasy book where an old very powerful weapon (a sword) is found for the first time by very unlikely characters.
