Salem's Lot
Author: Stephen King
Genre: Horror
Original Publication date: October 1975
Book description:
'Salem's Lot is a small New England town with white clapboard houses, tree-lined streets, and solid church steeples. That summer in 'Salem's Lot was a summer of home-coming and return; spring burned out and the land lying dry, crackling underfoot. Late that summer, Ben Mears returned to 'Salem's Lot hoping to cast out his own devils... and found instead a new unspeakable horror.
A stranger had also come to the Lot, a stranger with a secret as old as evil, a secret that would wreak irreparable harm on those he touched and in turn on those they loved.
All would be changed forever—Susan, whose love for Ben could not protect her; Father Callahan, the bad priest who put his eroded faith to one last test; and Mark, a young boy who sees his fantasy world become reality and ironically proves the best equipped to handle the relentless nightmare of 'Salem's Lot.
Thoughts:
We have a mystery for the start of the book which made me want to get to the end and figure out what happened. I like the way it was set up, sometimes not knowing is annoying but this case was great!
We have several characters, Ben, Susan, Jimmy, there are many. We start to see little snips of each of the people's lives of many of the inhabitants of the town so you start to care for them.
It has a small-town vibe that seems very realistic, there is an interminable gossip, people always look at newcomers and point them out even if they have been there for a few years. The whole aspect of the small-town felt very realistic and I loved it, even if some attitudes were annoying, but hey that is the point.
To tell the truth, before picking up the book, I knew nothing about it. I did not read the description or looked up any reviews. This book was picked up as it was the next one in publication order and it was a great pick. So I will simply say there is something paranormal, but I won't specify what it is as its best to figure it out as you go along reading.
But we have a very classical way of describing the supernatural event taking place, we have old lore being referenced and it was woven into the story very well.
The whole town was overly open to accept the supernatural, it was a bit surprising but still, it clicked well.
The end was a bit longer than expected. But I found I liked it from beginning to end!
I started to have a slump and instead of reading 3-4 books at the time but I found a huge lack of inspiration to read but this one I did not leave, I had to finish it.
I really liked it!
