April 2020 Wrap up

Image
This month was a very good reading month. I did better than what I expected, I had given up powering through and get through more than 12 books. I had a little slump last couple of weeks in winter.  Let's take a look at what we had this month. As I said I did better than what I thought.

Gideon the Ninth

Image
Author: Tamsyn Muir  Series: The locked Tomb #1 Genre: Sci-Fi Original publication date: September 2019 Book description:  Brought up by unfriendly, ossifying nuns, ancient retainers, and countless skeletons, Gideon is ready to abandon a life of servitude and an afterlife as a reanimated corpse. She packs up her sword, her shoes, and her dirty magazines, and prepares to launch her daring escape. But her childhood nemesis won't set her free without a service. Harrowhark Nonagesimus, Reverend Daughter of the Ninth House and bone witch extraordinaire, has been summoned into action. The Emperor has invited the heirs to each of his loyal Houses to a deadly trial of wits and skill. If Harrowhark succeeds she will become an immortal, all-powerful servant of the Resurrection, but no necromancer can ascend without their cavalier. Without Gideon's sword, Harrow will fail, and the Ninth House will die. Thoughts: This was a very popular book since last year when it was going to

The Stand

Image
Author: Stephen King Genre: Horror, Apocalyptical  Original publication date: October 1978 Book description: A patient escapes from a biological testing facility, unknowingly carrying a deadly weapon: a mutated strain of super-flu that will wipe out 99 percent of the world's population within a few weeks. Those who remain are scared, bewildered, and in need of a leader. Two emerge--Mother Abagail, the benevolent 108-year-old woman who urges them to build a peaceful community in Boulder, Colorado; and Randall Flagg, the nefarious "Dark Man," who delights in chaos and violence. As the dark man and the peaceful woman gather power, the survivors will have to choose between them--and ultimately decide the fate of all humanity. Thoughts: We have a very slow-moving story in my point of view, the overall plot is not the main focus but the characters.  Mother Abigail and Randall Flagg were a bit of a disappointment and at the same time surprising.  First, we have the st

I found this video in Bill Ruttenberg  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dhqSmiCbFX4 (original) Princess of Paperback - https://youtu.be/Wyir0th7HE4   PROMPTS:  A book you could/have read in a day  I have not done this in a while, but I've been reading Saga volumes and walking dead in single days as they are graphic novels. But I have read books in a single day as I could not put them down, generally, I do this with Thrillers the most recent was Rage by Stephen King, it's about a high schooler who takes a classroom hostage and what they live through in that single afternoon. Actually,, some of Stephen King's books inspire me to finish them in single days, I also did the same with Carrie. - Guilty pleasure book   These types of questions are showing up quite often, let's see what other books can I pick for this. I know I really like the island of the Lost by Melissa de la Cruz, I am not even sure why., it's full of predictable plot and characters, a v

Reading the most recommended Post-Apocalyptic books

Image
So this topic is one that I have been greatly interested yet I have read very little of them. So for the next couple of weeks, I will try to read some of the books that are widely recommended.  So first off let's try to find a few recommendations. The main source of book recommendations for me is from booktube so I'll try to get a few videos of booktubers that I generally follow.  The dynamic is to pick a creator: booktube or from other media platform and find their post-apocalyptic/dystopian book recommendation and try to read some if not all of the recommended books in a month.  With this, we will hopefully find new favorites and expand our knowledge of the genre and test the similarity of our bookish likes.  The first option for me will be Emily Fox, I really enjoy watching her videos.  Lits of books mentioned by her: The Stand , Stephen King.   This is the way the world ends: with a nanosecond of computer error in a Defense Department laboratory and a mil

The final empire

Image
Author: Brandon Sanderson Series: Mistborn #1 Genre: Fantasy Original publication date: July 2006 Book description: Where ash falls from the sky, and mist dominates the night, evil cloaks the land and stifles all life. Criminal mastermind Kelsier teaches Allomancy, the magic of metals, to another Mistborn, urchin Vin 16. The unlikely heroine is distracted by rich Venture heir Elend. Can Kelsier's thieving crew take on the tyrant Lord Ruler and bring back colour to their world? Thoughts: As a reread I was already familiar with the characters and the world so this time I did not have a hard time getting into the book like the first time I read it.  I already liked Vin and Kelsier but again it feels very overwhelming. We have Vin a girl who has struggled all her life to survive in the current society and is very wary of people. She distrusts people and when strangers come up to her and offer to teach her to control an ability she did not know she was already using, she is

Poirot Investigates

Image
Author: Agatha Christie Series: Hercules Poirot Mysteries #3 Genre: Mystery, Short Stories Original publication date: 1924 Book description: A short story collection of mysteries and cases Poirot and his friend Hastings solve. Thoughts: First off I am reading the works of Agatha Christie in publication order, I had begun to buy her works in second-hand shops and in amazon when I ran into any of them at a cheap price (yeah I am a cheap person, or just not rich I have to try to downsize my expenses). I have owned this book for a little bit, I bought it last year and yet I had no idea it was a short story collection, pretty funny how that works. This book contains several stories so I'll give just a rating to each one and then do an overall rating for the collection. *The adventure of the western star. A movie star seeks Poirot, she is scared. She received a few letters warning her that she will lose a precious diamond. Another person in England has rumored to have a si

Saga Vol 3

Image
Author: Bria K. Vaughan Artist: Fiona Staples Series Saga Chapter 13 to 16 Publication date: March 19, 2014 Book Description (from Good Reads): tale of one young family fighting to find their place in the universe. Searching for their literary hero, new parents Marko and Alana travel to a cosmic lighthouse on the planet Quietus, while the couple's multiple pursuers finally close in on their targets. Thoughts: We have several stories going at the same time. The Will and Gwendolyn trapped in a weird paradisaic little planet. There are several trials they face in part that makes them even more endearing. We get to know a bit more about their past and the people close to it.  The Robot IV prince is still chasing them and he proves to be more resourceful or smart than what people give him credit for. There are a couple of reporters chasing the story of the century! And they are smarter than what people expect, and they are getting very close to what the government feels c

She wants to find love, but it eludes her. She wants to be fulfilled, but her job is a dead end. She wants to belong, but her life is so isolated. You probably don’t know anyone like the Moore sisters. They have an unbreakable circle of friends. They live the most glamorous life. They always get what they desire.
